  1. I’ll keep an eye (and ear) out—thanks for the rec! Right now:
  2. Kershaw’s best bet would be to get an extension with the Dodgers. I think he’d be an idiot to opt out... and was anybody surprised that David Price opted not to opt out? The market is not great for pitchers on the wrong side of 30 who are already making the kind of money that Kershaw and Price are hauling in.
  3. Another used find at Landlocked this afternoon:
  4. One of my favorite players when I was a kid, though he was well past his prime. Dan, re Gardner, I just hope NY signed him for a couple million. He could still provide some value as a backup and pinch-runner, but yeah, offensively I think he’s just about out of gas.
  5. Hey Late, I came across a used copy of Goodbye Mr. Evans today at Landlocked Music and definitely recommend it if you’re still interested in checking out more of his recordings.
  6. Listening to this for the first time ever this evening and really digging it. 👍
  7. Recently picked up a super-cheap used copy of the two-CD set that collects all three of Ronstadt’s collaborations with Riddle—I’ve always been curious to hear them. So far I have to agree with Jsngry’s assessments, both about Ronstadt’s singing (a pleasant enough voice, but she seems to be in the same torchy emotional key no matter what the song she’s performing) and the lifelessness of Riddle’s arrangements (though I know he was in declining health at the time). These records were certainly successful in a commercial sense, especially the first one, and though not the first rock-to-standards effort, as Jim pointed out (and don’t forget Willie Nelson, though he was coming out of country, I realize), perhaps the ones, along with Nelson’s, that established the marketplace viability, for better or worse, of such projects.
  8. What’s your prognosis for the Rangers?
  9. I’m going to be in NYC that Sunday through Tuesday for the Jazz Congress and definitely plan on attending the Gary Bartz-Pharoah Sanders tribute to Another Earth.
  10. Oh, I remember re JD! ☺️ He really did work out splendidly for you guys, though, and from what I’ve read he also ended up serving as somewhat of a hitting mentor to his teammates. I really do think, given how young the outfield core is, and how Sale and Martinez are still in their prime (and Price not that far removed) that Boston has a window of opportunity to duplicate NY’s 1998-2000 run of three titles in a row. You know the team much more deeply than I do, but seems your off-season priorities might be resigning Eovaldi and sizing up possible set-up relievers for Kimbrel? (He’s got one more year on his contract, correct?) Anybody on the free-agent market in general that you’d like to see Boston pursue? What about the infield?
  11. Interesting evalution—I’m inclined to give the nod to 1998 NY based on the info it cites (but then of course I am). Still, I’d say the three most dominant teams I’ve seen in my lifetime have been the 1975-76 Reds, the 1998 Yankees, and this year’s Red Sox. No reason they can’t reel off another title or two in the next several years... they’re well-positioned for it. And with the Yankees apparently refusing to make any changes in their coaching staff or approach, I don’t think it matters much who they sign or trade for in the off-season... they’ll again be an underachieving team that wins 95-100 games but can’t go the distance. Cora’s already proved that he’s a much better manager than Boone... still disappointed that Boston didn’t sign Varitek instead, Dan?
  12. I’ve been wanting to do a Night Lights show about these broadcasts for years.
  13. Just ordered this set, having been a Maxwell Davis fan ever since picking up the Charles Brown and Amos Milburn Mosaics in the late 1990s. I often wished for a collection like this, but over the years Davis had fallen off my radar (and I didn’t see this thread when Dan started it back in 2012), until tonight, when I got into the mood to revisit the Brown Mosaic. Looks like the Ace title was never released on CD?
  14. I had the same reaction. I always loved Angell’s elegies for the season just passed.
  15. A classic--the 2018 Dodgers could have used him, methinks. Better test him for steroids first! As for tonight's game and the 2018 MLB season in general, if I may borrow a meme from another sport:
  16. How Chris Sale helped turn Game 4
  17. Thought I’d launch the tip-off... 😊 Anybody see the highlights from yesterday’s Celtics-Pistons game? Seems like Boston finally found its offensive form... they’ll be awfully tough to beat if they can sustain that level of play. (And that was with Tatum and Irving scoring only nine points between them.) Though Golden State has to remain the favorite, obviously, barring an apocalyptic series of injuries.
  18. Can’t see Boston blowing this at all. They’ve played like the best team in baseball all year, so no surprise that they’re now only one game away from dispatching the Dodgers. The only thing that kept them from a sweep was an errant Ian Kinsler throw.
  19. Not sure I ever recall seeing a bullpen fail as consistently as LA’s has so far this series. True that Madson has inherited eight runners and allowed every single one of them to score through the first four games?
