2017-18 MLB Hot Stove League!

This has been one of the coldest Hot Stoves ever, methinks, mostly due to the frozen free-agent market. Pitchers and catchers coming this week, though! -
Thanks for the recommendation—this arrived yesterday and I’m listening now. 👍

I finally got the Complete Basement Tapes set and am working my way through it this weekend—culmination of a longtime desire to hear all of this material. Worth the wait!

Had my first encounter with the goodmayor redirect last night via my phone and couldn’t get to the Org site at all, either through bookmark or bringing it up through Google. Apparently the goodmayor was removed from office overnight.

I did an hour-long telephone interview with Ken Vandermark yesterday, just ahead of his performance with Phil Sudderberg in Bloomington this evening. We covered a lot of ground, and he tells a great story about his first encounter with Anthony Braxton. We'll be broadcasting the interview on "Just You And Me" this afternoon, but you can listen to it in its entirety at the link below: A Conversation With Ken Vandermark

Up for rebroadcast this week and for John Handy’s 85th birthday today: Handy With The Horn: The Rise Of John Handy -
Love the Graettinger and Holman Kenton sides--in general, Kenton's been a grower for me over the years. I've always been curious about this one: Kenton/Wagner

Cubs front-runners to land Yu Darvish? -
This week we're re-airing Handy With The Horn in honor of the saxophonist's upcoming 85th birthday, and I'm reposting the 2008 interview that I did with him as well. Part 1 (early encounters with Dexter Gordon and Art Tatum, why he came to favor the alto over the tenor saxophone, and the legendary young bassist Albert Stinson, who was a member of Handy’s late-1960s band) Part 2 (Handy talks about his unusual method of tonguing, how he came to play with Charles Mingus, and the origins of “Goodbye Porkpie Hat”) Part 3 (Handy's troubled relationship with his first record label, his recording of “Alice in Wonderland” with Charles Mingus, why trumpeter Richard Williams didn’t appear on his second album, his move back to California in the early 1960s, his Freedom Band civil-rights project, and the formation of his quintet that would appear at Monterey in 1965) Part 4 ( Why Handy's quintet broke up, playing Bartok with classical pianist Leonid Hambro, his experiences as a jazz educator, and his memories of Monterey and the mid-1960s rock scene)

Bluemonkey, if you're a Sonny Berman fan, you might want to check out this Night Lights show I did a few years ago: The Incomplete Sonny Berman

Listening to the ASV Charleston Chasers compilation has finally spurred me to order the first two Jazz Oracle sets of Nichols’ Brunswick recordings. Anybody else have any or all three of them? Iirc this was originally intended as a Mosaic set, and then Mosaic passed along the remasterings and Dick Sudhalter’s notes to Jazz Oracle?

Second Misterioso on this one—just listened to it recently myself. Listening to this makes me feel that it’s really time to get around to picking up those three 3-CD Red Nichols sets:

Have you checked with Scott at Mosaic? They often have leftover replacement discs for sale. -
I'll second the recommendation for Handy's Roulettes. I'm actually re-airing a Night Lights show about him next week for his 85th birthday that covers this period in part. Handy himself was evidently not all that happy with how they turned out (quotes at end of this post and the beginning of this post).

This week’s show, including commentary from Burton himself, in honor of the vibraphonist’s 75th birthday, which occurred yesterday (January 23): New Vibes: Gary Burton In The 1960s
