  1. Liner notes, via the power of Google image search!
  2. Thanks so much for the forthcoming transcription--I have the 2017 Japanese reissue here sitting on my desk at work, as I'm using it in a year-end Night Lights program, but the liner notes are in Japanese and appear to be a 2017 account of the history of the Flying Dutchman label. No Nelson notes, in either Japanese or English. Excellent album--I've heard much of it before off an old twofer LP that we have in the WFIU library.
  3. I ordered DETS 24 from Amazon UK a couple of days ago for about $17, including shipping: Duke Ellington Treasury Shows V. 24
  4. I saw that a few years ago when I was on a bit of a Deanna Durbin kick, and yes, definitely not what the title would lead you to expect. Also responsible for introducing Frank Loesser's "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year" (sung by Durbin's character in the film).
  5. Up for the anniversary of David's birth: The David Baker Songbook
  6. Completely agree. I bit on the recent Sonny Clark reissue because it contained an entire LP worth of alternate takes and cost $25 at my local record store--seemed reasonable for a well-done two-LP set. But in general I have developed a real hostility for the inflated vinyl-fetishist market, where many releases cost 3-4 times what the CD version costs, or, as is increasingly the case, no CD version is made available at all. (This applies to some recent new releases too.) I can live with the Rollins Contemporary box set on this one, or the 2010 OJC reissue, and spend my $70 elsewhere. Pass.... others, enjoy!
  7. A lot of her late-1950s work with Riddle on this CD that I'm listening to right now:
  8. We re-aired this show last week on Night Lights, and it remains archived for online listening: Ellington Ending: Duke Ellington 1967-73
  9. Wow, yes, just looked over the discography, and that's pretty much another CD's worth of Basie broadcasts, in addition to what was released on the second iTunes volume.
  10. Better this than giving up both Clint Frazier and Chance Adams for Gerrit Cole, who had an ace season in 2015, was injured in 2016, and then gave up 31 HRs last year pitching in the National League. A huge risk of a deal for NY, and unfortunately apparently still in the works. I'd be OK with giving up Frazier but not anybody else in our top-prospects bracket, and certainly not a pitcher.
  11. Good move and the price is right IMO: Yankees resign CC Sabathia to one-year, $10 million deal
  12. Details here: Mosaic Records is releasing a Savory recordings set
  13. Up for Barry Harris' 88th birthday today and Toshiko Akiyoshi's earlier this week: Bud's Buds: Barry Harris And Toshiko Akiyoshi
  14. Influence on George Lucas, correct? Particularly the Death Star run in the first Star Wars film?
  15. Song of the moment: John Coltrane performs "Alabama"
  16. Mine arrived today from a seller in Illinois, along with a promotional bookmark that features the book on one side and last year's Resonance CD release on the other. Can't wait to dig into this.
  17. You and me both! These were my top picks in those two categories for a jazz poll I participated in a few days ago.
  18. This excellent Coltrane tribute that I picked up used last Friday:
  19. Just started season 1 of The Man In The High Castle.
  20. Up for Mr. Tyner's 79th birthday today: Inception: McCoy Tyner On Impulse
  21. WBGO obit: Sunny Murray
  22. We recently re-aired Ramblin' Man: Charlie Haden, and it remains archived for online listening.
