  1. Frank Wess on "You Don't Know What Love Is" from Roland Hanna's New York Jazz Quartet date...
  2. Yanks are so inconsistent of late--only two starters who are generally reliable are Tanaka and Severino. Supposedly the brace that CC's now wearing is allowing him to pitch without as much fear of discomfort, so perhaps he'll continue to be less of a liability than he was earlier this season. Even if NY wins the wild-card death match, I still don't see them getting very far in the playoffs. P.S. to Jim's KC query: what's up with Johnny Cueto? Though I gather he had a good start the other night... new-league adjustment? Injury? Other?
  3. Jim, in my AL East absorption, just now noticing that your Rangers have breezed into first place. If they stay there, the Yankees may be wild-carding with the other team o' Texans.
  4. Great, great sets. Wish they'd been able to do a 1950-1954 one as well.
  5. The music in this set (of which I've heard little till now) is insanely good, not to mention the cast of musicians performing it. On disc 4 right now with Dizzy Reece and Manhattan Project... more Albert Dailey (and more Dizzy Reece) is always a desirable thing in my jazz universe.
  6. I've always wanted to read that book, Leeway... have a copy but haven't gotten to it yet. Right now, among other things:
  7. Amazing win by the Yankees tonight! At this point they're almost certainly wildcard-bound, and given the loss of Tex and Eovaldi for the year, any progress they make in the playoffs would simply be a bonus... but what a heartening turnaround in the top of the 9th tonight, after nearly getting no-hit by Ramirez. Great outing from CC as well.
  8. Brooklyn Brothers and Cuber's Cuber Libre are both part of the 25 scheduled CD reissues, yes. More here: Xanadu Master Edition series
  9. At least they're wobbling. The Yankees seem to have collapsed and are currently expiring on the sidewalk.
  10. Jsngry, looking more and more like a Rangers-Yankees wild-card death-match!
  11. Thank you for the heads-up on this--saw them in Bloomington a few years back and was blown away by how good they were.
  12. Are you thinking of these tracks? Miles Davis and Tadd Dameron in Paris 1949 It's not Panassie (who despised bebop) there--announcers "unknown" and "Maurice Cullaz" (rather prominent voice in French jazz radio/criticism circles, apparently. Brownie could undoubtedly fill all of this in much more).
  13. Actually, it's for an upcoming Night Lights "Bebop Comes To Europe" program, and one of the musical tracks I'm using, by Hubert Fol and His Bebop Minstrels (inc. Kenny Clarke), is titled "Assy Panassy." Whomever could they possibly be referring to?
  14. Hugues Panassie?
  15. ...and some previous Night Lights programs up for Mr. Rollins' birthday as well: Rollins '57: Sonny Rollins Takes The Lead Sonny Rollins: Live In London Sonnymoon: Thelonious Monk And Sonny Rollins
  16. Excellent! Scott told me last week that they might not be shipping for a couple more weeks, so this is great news.
  17. A new Night Lights show up today for Mr. Rollins' 85th: Crossing The Bridge: The Return Of Sonny Rollins ...and some previous ones as well: Rollins '57: Sonny Rollins Takes The Lead Sonny Rollins: Live In London
  18. Posted for Sonny Rollins' 85th birthday, last week's Night Lights show delves into the story and music of his early-1960s return to the jazz scene, following a two-year sabbatical. The program page includes video of Rollins' quartet performing live in 1962: Crossing The Bridge: The Return Of Sonny Rollins
  19. Well, it's been such a long time, who can tell? But, mostly, probably...Just as much a pain in the neck damn intellectual as ever. Then you've certainly come back to the right place!
  20. Indeed, jazz reissue CD's are alive and well in Japan. Blue Note just had a bunch of interesting titles reissued the last two months there. When's the last time they reissued catalog titles in the US? 2009 or something like that? I just bought a bunch of Japanese jazz reissues from FOPP in central London for £3 a pop - a big discount on the £20+ I remember such Japanese reissues costing. Hello, Simon Weil!! A long, LONG time... so good to see your name pop up in a post here.
  21. "Turn! Turn! Turn!" by the Byrds. Ironically enough, my favorite Rolling Stones song when I was a kid (and the first song by them I ever heard), "Get Off Of My Cloud," was #1 just a couple of weeks before I was born.
  22. I've recently gotten interested in this series and hope to soon pick up the first couple of books in it. Right now I'm reading Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived In The Castle, as well as this:
  23. This week's Night Lights show pays a centennial-year tribute to arranger Eddie Sauter and his work with Red Norvo, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Ray McKinley, the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra, and Stan Getz. You can listen to the program online here: Jazz a la Sauter: Eddie Sauter Next week: "Crossing The Bridge: The Return Of Sonny Rollins."
  24. Excellent single-disc compilation of the Victor small group sides--I traded it in when the box came out.
  25. The abandoned Gennett studio building in 1963:
