Apologies if posted elsewhere: CTI reissues coming I've been wanting to hear Ron Carter's ALL BLUES for quite awhile, after getting a strong rec for it from a friend a few years ago. The Hollywood Palladium concert sounds promising as well.

Danny? Yeah, he seems to have vanished. If the agency somehow finds a way to hang on without Lucky Strike, any chance we'll see Sal back in some capacity? Also wondering if anybody else is going to die this year--we've had Anna Draper and Miss Blankenship so far. I had a feeling the Korea issue was going to come back on Don this year; the war's alluded to in the opening scene of the Season 4 debut (the reporter with the artificial leg who's interviewing Don). Quite a turnaround, that he had to depend on Pete Campbell taking a big fall for him to keep things from getting any worse.

They have been, at least on the 2000 DVD release that I have. My wife prefers the earlier version, while I still like the second better (although the deleted scene from the earlier version with Bogart in the prosecutor's/DA's office is a pleasure to watch). The backstory on why the earlier version was shelved is interesting. Bacall had, as Larry notes, turned in an excellent, star-making performance in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Her followup movie, however--CONFIDENTIAL AGENT, based on a lesser-known Graham Greene novel--was a bomb (I've never seen it, but reports are that Bacall and co-star Charles Boyer did not strike any sparks together onscreen). There was a lot of concern about whether or not Bacall's career was finished, and so some of THE BIG SLEEP's sexier scenes--particularly the "depends on who's in the saddle" conversation in the bar--were added, with the (ultimately successful) goal of burnishing her cinematic image.

Well, they decided to try to help today for a change , though I think it'll take a miracle for NY to somehow pull out the division at this point (especially since our fold in the last two games against Tampa Bay gave them the season head-to-head edge at 10-8, meaning that a W-L tie will go to them). Hell, at this point NY is just trying to make the playoffs, after getting knocked around by the Bosox Friday and Saturday. They've even switched starters for tonight and put Hughes on the mound (though Hughes at home is generally worse than Hughes on the road). The Yankees look like they're far from being in fighting trim for the postseason at this point...only advantage of the wild-card would be that the Rays, instead of us, would have to face Cliff Lee and Texas in a 5-game series. Again, the 2009 mojo seems to be missing from this year's edition. Pinstripe Alley posters console themselves with thoughts of 2000 (when NY dropped 15 of its final 18 but still went on to win the World Series), but to me it's looking more like 2005 or 2007.

I haven't heard the entire Holiday performance from that festival, but I agree with you, Medjuck. Does the Concord/MJF label have plans to release more music from the Monterey vaults?
