  1. JTaylor, it's a great CD--I'm featuring it on an upcoming Afterglow and will also include it in an end-of-year Night Lights reissues/historical releases roundup. I may have asked you this already, but were you involved with this Cole project? (I seem to recall that you were. Don't have the CD with me to check right now, though.)
  2. The Threadgill set listed as now available.
  3. So it looks like there's a fair amount of material here that's not on the Bear Family box. Another one for the birthday/Christmas wish-list... EDIT: is this still a 2-CD set with all of the music listed earlier in the thread? The Storyville listing alludes to a second CD with the newsreel clip but gives a music track listing for only one CD.
  4. Yes! I read this a few years ago...your post makes me want to pull it out again. Thanks for the reminder, Matthew.
  5. An appearance by the aforementioned Danny last night ("Anybody have a question?" SCDP meeting...that was hilarious). As we've seen before, a crisis bringing out bad/unhinged behavior in Don (teeing off on Pete, trying to coerce Dr. Faye into violating her professional scruples). Did anybody else start to worry about Roger possibly becoming suicidal, in lieu of his losing the Lucky Strike account, his bumbling, in-denial behavior, and Joan's finally closing the door on their being together again? And by the end of the episode Don had created another screwed-up situation for himself; now that Dr. Faye's thrown her professional ethics over for him, I don't think she'll take too kindly to his leaving her for Megan, if that should come to pass.
  6. Oh boy, here we go: Gah, the kind of recitation that always gives me a sense of dread. "(Yankees) (Team X) own this team," etc., etc. Sooner or later there's always a comeuppance... NY better go into this series ready for a fight. Twins 2-8 in their last 10? NY was 3-7. This team never recovered from Andy Pettitte's injury, and I don't think Pettitte has had enough time to get back to form for the playoffs.
  7. Dave--shame on me for not tracking a potential playoff opponent over the past week and a half. I still think they'll be fired up to knock us off, though, and they'll have homefield advantage to try and do it. I agree w/you about preparing for an early exit, though. Here are some Yankee fun facts from the AP's recap of today's game: We were also 9-17 in our last 26 games and our series record was one win, one tie, and six losses... a 1-1-6 stretch of abysmal mediocrity. Yes, people over at PA keep waving the 2000 flag, but I think that regular-season collapse was simply a terrible slump, whereas the long 2010 fade reflects deep-seated issues with the starting rotation and only-average situational hitting (not to mention that the bullpen is starting to look shaky again of late).
  8. Barring the mother of all comebacks, looks like Boston will put the kibosh on NY winning the AL East championship today. Pretty pitiful performance on the Yankees' part, esp. given how decimated Boston's roster already is and that they fielded the B version of said roster in Game 2 last night and still knocked us off (as Jon Heyman quipped, the Bosox starting lineup for Game 2 probably looked like Murderers' Row to A.J.). Only consolation is that we won't be facing Cliff Lee twice in a five-game series...though given how mediocre NY's been playing lately, I'm not sure Lee would have needed to start a second time against us, and I'm not particularly optimistic about facing a hot and fired-up Twins team either.
  9. Hey Bob, welcome, thanks for posting this here; I tweeted/Facebooked a link to your blog not long ago. What's the story with the "lost album" that's supposedly coming out in some form? (In the big Herbie Columbia box, perhaps?)
  10. "Chill of Death" for sure.
  11. Claude Thornhill's "Portrait of a Guinea Farm" and Fletcher Henderson's "Queer Notions" are a couple that come to mind.
  12. I read last night that they scotched Hernandez' last start; I still think he'll be a strong candidate for the Cy Young, even without the opportunity to pick up one more win. In other Sunday-start news, Joe Girardi said the Yankees' starter will be "Mr. TBA."
  13. Marc Myers is delving into the backstory on this over at Jazzwax. He'll be reviewing the King reissues in a followup article tomorrow.
  14. Ed Valentine at Pinstripe Alley agrees with you and I'm inclined to do so as well. Even if they somehow get past the Twins and the winner of the Rays-Rangers series, I can't see them beating the Phillies again (not to write off the rest of the NL--I just think it's highly likely that the Phillies make it back).
  15. Upping this for those interested in the movie, which seems to be getting prominent mention in the Curtis obits that I've seen so far. No further word that I can find on a Criterion blu-ray edition. The BFI book by Naremore (who's on the Night Lights show) is well worth checking out.
  16. Texas beats the Mariners on a walkoff strikeout/wild pitch/throwing error?
  17. You'd still need the Reprise Mosaic box and the 1947-52 Columbia material, for starters. But yeah, this is going to fill in a huge gap in the Ducal-on-disc realm.
  18. Apologies if posted elsewhere: CTI reissues coming I've been wanting to hear Ron Carter's ALL BLUES for quite awhile, after getting a strong rec for it from a friend a few years ago. The Hollywood Palladium concert sounds promising as well.
  19. The John Carter-Bobby Bradford Select, disc 1.
  20. Congrats to the Reds, who clinched the NL Central in the most celebratory way possible, with a walkoff home run by Jay Bruce. Great to see them take the division title again. And congrats to the Rays, too, who also clinched a playoff spot tonight... excellent start from Price.
  21. Me as well, J.A.W. Unlike Godot, I believe this box is now bound to arrive!
  22. Hey fans! Fake Michael Kay has been shut down.
  23. This past week's Night Lights show, We Brothers Three, is now posted for online listening. It features music from a trio of brotherly trios: *Thad, Hank and Elvin Jones *Jimmy, Percy and Tootie Heath *Wes, Buddy and Monk Montgomery
