  1. Up round midnight listening to Monk--"Misterioso" from Big Band/Quartet.
  2. I tried to log into the forum today, but it won't accept my password. Anybody else have this issue?
  3. A somewhat revised version of this program aired last week and is now archived for online listening: Suite History: Four Jazz Composers and the African-American Odyssey
  4. This has turned out to be a pretty damn good game.
  5. I've now tried sending the PM from my home computer to the same member and am encountering the same problem--once I hit "send" on the message, nothing happens. Didn't encounter this when I sent my test message to you, J.A.W.--I got the "message sent" pop-up with that correspondence, as I usually do. ?? Very puzzling...I'm using Firefox on both my home and work computers, but for some reason I am just not able to send anything to this board member (and he's not blocking his PMs).
  6. Just came across this while doing some Internet searches for Arnold Ross: Synanon (Pt 1) ...it's a fictionalized 1965 movie about Synanon. Music by Neal Hefti. For anybody interested in the Joe Pass album, here's the Night Lights show I did: Resolution: Jazz From Rehab
  7. Anybody else having problems sending PMs today? I just tried to send one to a board member--first by clicking on "send a message" in his profile, but after writing the message I couldn't get it to send, despite numerous attempts. Then I tried "Compose new message" from my own messenger box, pulled his board handle up, and tried to send, whereupon I got an "internal server"/error 404 type message.
  8. Just a heads-up that there's a good deal of Arnold Ross on this recent Hep release: Corky Corcoran With the Lamplighter All-Stars, 1945 Ross is the pianist on two of the three broadcast sets and gets a fair amount of soloing time.
  9. That's one of the articles I Xeroxed over at the IU School of Music Library, and one of the best things I came across about Shaw. Don DeMichael also wrote what's probably the most extensive biographical piece about Shaw for the Jan. 30, 1964 issue of Downbeat (pg. 16-18), and Harvey Pekar did a profile as well for the July/August 1972 issue of Coda (pg. 12-14).
  10. Picked this up used a couple of years ago and definitely second Jsngry's recommendation.
  11. It really IS Webster, isn't it? On the soundtrack, I mean...I think they used Webster's actual recording for what the band was supposed to be playing.
  12. Some folks have probably already seen this in the Jazz Radio forum, but just in case you didn't, here's the Night Lights show: Chicago Calling: Unsung Heroes of the City's Hardbop Scene
  13. The name of the vocal group the Treniers?
  14. I've got the new Hep and it's fantastic. The "small group from the big band" is a 1949 version of the Gramercy Five, and there are about 5-6 sides from it on this new collection.
  15. Bill, thanks--I wish I'd had more time to spend talking a bit about Shaw. Very interesting guy--I Xeroxed some old Downbeat articles about him while I was researching the show. He quit Mingus' group after a blowup during one of the Bethlehem dates (Shaw called in sick, Mingus never got the message, Mingus threatened him in Mingus-like fashion, Shaw said "see ya"). I think that Dusty Groove reissue of BREAKTHROUGH is still in print.
  16. Latest I heard was that he's interested in signing with Detroit. I'm sure he'd love to be back with NY instead, and I wish we had him back as well, but yeah, I can't fathom any way that would happen now.
  17. This past week's show up for online listening--music from Ira Sullivan, Wilbur Ware, John Jenkins and more: Chicago Calling: Unsung Heroes of the City's Hardbop Scene ...already at work on a sequel.
  18. I just got the new Shaw yesterday and listened to disc 1 last night. Excellent set! Lots of material that I've never heard before (including the handful of 1949-50 Gramercy Five sides that Shaw recorded), very good sound, the usual extensive notes and in-depth liners... highly recommended.
  19. Well, we managed to carry the day with one of the worst RISP hitters around last year (Robinson Cano), so I imagine we'll muddle through with Randy Winn as well. Again, I'd rather have Damon back for another year, but Randy Winn batting 9th is not a big concern for me. I'm more concerned about Vasquez, the fifth starter situation, and how our pitching staff matches up overall against Boston's. I'm also concerned about Nick Johnson's susceptibility to injuries and the notion of his batting second, given that he can't run to save his life.
  20. I interviewed Kelley recently for an upcoming Night Lights show, and he said that he had cut 70,000 words out of the book--much of it music analysis--and that he'd be posting some of the deleted sections on his website. Looks like some are now up: Outtakes
  21. Tons of stuff about Salinger in the new New Yorker.
  22. I've posted the jazz winners on the Night Lights site.
  23. Damn...and to think I bought it for $7.99 just a few months ago! Newbury's sure been the source of some great deals lately when it comes to Concord/Fantasy cut-outs.
  24. Great topic, Joe--I'm working on a Night Lights show somewhat similar to this. For starters, "Donna Lee" is based on "Indiana." "Ko-Ko" is based on "Cherokee," correct?
