  1. Butler to the Final Four in hometown Indy!
  2. NPR story about Pat Patrick tonight--audio available at 7 p.m. EST.
  3. Wow..anybody else watching the Xavier-Kansas St. game? In double overtime right now.
  4. Go Bulldogs! I'd love to see Butler get to the Big Dance in their hometown. Beautiful campus, btw; used to take walks up around there with my grandfather all the time when I was a kid.
  5. Five Spot w/Monk!
  6. This sounds fantastic, Lazaro! I'll tune in tonight and try for tomorrow as well. BTW, the Night Lights "Chicago Calling" sequel is in the can, though I'm going to go back and revise the ending to add an Eddie Higgins track w/Paul Serrano...will be airing in early May.
  7. Oh, HELL yeah! And I actually like the Sex Pistols... The Sex Pistols covered Roadrunner? Oh my god...I think I just had a chewy moment... Yes, and at one point Lydon starts muttering, "I forgot the words...stop it, it's awful, it's bloody f*&&ing awful!"
  8. We re-aired this program last week and it is available for online listening: Cats Who Swing and Sing: Women Singer-Pianists of the 1940s and 50s
  9. Marian McPartland on Afterglow last week.
  10. Nice collection of videos at Pitchfork: Alex Chilton R.I.P.
  11. Crap. I only saw him once, back in the late 1980s at Second Story in Bloomington. There was actually a lot of jazz in AC's background, growing up in Memphis in the late 1950s/60s. I still love those Big Star records and will have to break them out again... a reconfigured version of the band was supposed to be playing South by Southwest this weekend. Best wishes for a long ride in the big black car, Alex.
  12. New episodes airing in May on the PBS station here in Bloomington. Here's a rundown of them, all set in the summer of 1945:
  13. Does that mean that Pat Sajak was really Illya Kuryakin? If that's the case, I'm going need a few minutes to recalibrate. Even better Illya Kuryahkin. Seriously, great underground pop from the 1990s.
  14. Really, really been digging the LEGENDS OF ACID JAZZ comp today, which couples his first two Prestige LPs: SPARKS! and SPARK PLUG. Newbury has it through Amazon for $4.99 + shipping, so about 8 bucks total... glad I got it. Note to sheldonm: trumpeter on both dates is Virgil Jones!
  15. Oh yeah, LV--time for an 11-day WKCR-style marathon!! :excited:
  16. Best b-day wishes B and thanks so much for the note.
  17. That the one with "Once Upon a Time in the Projects"? I had it on cassette...that dates me, doesn't it?
  18. A little Public Enemy (late period) stuck in my head this a.m.: He Got Game It's from 1998, well past their peak, but I remember quite clearly the visceral excitement of their first three records. Can't wait for the new 33 1/3 book about It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.
  19. Yes, I think they went to an all-jazz format just a year ago or so and recently approached us about picking up the program. Unusual these days for a station to switch to all-jazz programming!
  20. If not mentioned already, Charles McPherson: McPherson's Mood $1.99
  21. A new station for Night Lights with a cinematic twist: Play Night Lights for Me
  22. A buck more ($4.99 plus three bucks shipping), but the KEEP ON A BLOWIN' Legends of Acid Jazz couples both the title LP and THUNDERBIRD: Keep On a Blowin' (Legends of Acid Jazz)
