Yep, but MN escaped with a nice double play... on to the 11th. BIG missed opportunity for NY there.
-
Unbelievable! A-Rod singles in Jeter with two outs to tie it in the 6th and then homers to tie it again in the bottom of the 9th... 5 RBI so far this series, and this game is ON again. We're going into the 10th!
-
Congratulations! Well, unless NY pulls off a helluva 9th inning, looks like we've got a series on our hands... Twins' bullpen definitely outdueling the Yanks' tonight. MN will go home holding the upper hand.

I just feel bad for Holliday. I also had hopes that the Yankees might make it all the way to the WS to face the Cards--would be a nice, historical rematch of that '64 series (still need to read Halberstam's book about it). That's looking much less likely now on the NL end of things.

Hmm, not sure, , but in the meantime I hope this might do as a substitute--just posted it an hour ago, ironically enough: The Hank Williams Songbook -
Wonderful J.D. Salinger site

No--I definitely think it's a nearly-overt allusion to/updating of the Glass family stories, which I still love. Somehow missed this piece in the Onion earlier this year: J.D. Salinger Comes Out of Seclusion to Rave About New Terminator Movie ...kind of a one-joke story, but still made me laugh. -
I've been getting hooked on his hand-puppet intros, particulary Wavey the Crocodile:

But anything can happen in the playoffs, and I'll agree w/Dan that regular-season match-up records are no indicator whatsoever of what might transpire in a 5-game or 7-game playoff series. Even over the course of a regular season...NY just could not beat the Bosox the first half of the year, and then the second half they seemingly just could not lose. Tonight by all rights should've been a slam-dunk for the Yanks, given that the Twins were coming off a rollercoaster 12-inning season-on-the-line marathon. Now they'll get another day of rest, and who knows? They pull one out on Friday and head back to two games at the Metrodome and suddenly it could be NY in a bad spot. I guess I'm just a pessimist who lives/loves to be proved wrong. And granted, NY does have a pretty awesome (in the old-fashioned sense of the word, as well as the new) line-up...as one of the announcers pointed out tonight, when your 8th-place batter had 29 HR and 82 RBI on the season, there's not much of a let-up for a pitcher. And it was Swisher who had what proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Great game for the Yanks tonight--CC had a good start, Jeter turned in a Captain October performance, A-Rod broke his playoff hitless-with-runners-on streak and drove in two runs, including a key single that set up Matsui's two-run homer... not sure I would've brought in Rivera to close out the 9th, but I guess with all of the time off Girardi wanted to make sure he got some work. Mostly just glad the Twins didn't steal a Cinderella morning-after one from NY.

Happy Birthday, Magnificent Goldberg!

Late to the party, but best birthday wishes, MG, and great to have you around whatever day it is in your life. -
I couldn't believe that he left Rodney in there either, Dan--he was obviously tiring and going to off-speed pitches much more often. Yeah, the Yanks will have their hands full--Twins are on a 17-4 run and the pump-up from tonight's victory will balance any fatigue they might be feeling. Their sorry regular-season record against NY means nothing at this point. Should be a very good series.

...and Minnesota escapes a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top half of the inning.
-
Absolutely! And Raburn going from goat to hero in the bottom of the 10th... I don't want this game to end.

Just got my shipping notice! It's on its way! Me too. Listened to disc 4 of FEARLESS LEADER last night.

This week on Night Lights it's John Zorn's Hardboiled Bop, featuring the saxophonist's late-1980s hardbop tributes to Sonny Clark and other hardbop icons. Music from the Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet and both News for Lulu albums (trio dates with guitarist Bill Frisell and trombonist George Lewis) is highlighted, as well as Zorn appearances with organist Big John Patton and saxophonist Lee Konitz, and a couple of Zorn's late-1980s noir-jazz sides. The program page also has two video clips of Zorn performing as part of the Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet in 1987. Weekly station air dates for Night Lights John Zorn's Hardboiled Bop archived online Next week: "Art Tatum: the Group Masterpieces."

Can we get a solid confirmation of this? Yes, this does not seem possible. The smaller booklet is 68 pages and contains the following; 1. Song Index 2. Ladies Day by Gary Giddens 3. Literary Lady by Farah Jasmine Griffin 4. Discography 5. Production Credits Did the first big one have a track by track analysis as well? Yes, by Michael Brooks, if I remember correctly. Yes, they were by Brooks, and were the same liner notes that accompanied the individual "Quintessential Billie Holiday" volumes that Columbia put out in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

Congrats to the Twins and their fans on mounting such a great chase over the past couple of weeks... I love tiebreaker playoff games, great for adding to the October drama. Hoping I can get away from production work for a bit Tuesday evening to catch some of the showdown.

Unbelievable! A-Rod goes into today's game needing two home runs and seven RBI to keep his 30/100 streak intact (11 seasons in a row going into 2009, but this season looked very iffy, given his missing the entire first month)...and he hits a three-run homer and a grand slam in the SAME INNING! Takes some of the sting out of having gotten knocked around by TB for the past two games, and helps end the regular season on a nice high note.

Sad to say that the Jazz Factory is gone as well. My wife & I saw Kurt Elling there in 2007--fantastic show, great club.

There was also the wonderful West Coast Classics series that he did through Blue Note in the late 1990s. I think it ended after only a dozen titles (didn't do very well sales-wise, as I recall), but it was a fantastic set of reissues.
