  1. Hey all, we've posted a survey with several questions about what people might want from the website, a potential podcast that we're developing, etc. If you ever listen to the show and have a few moments, could you fill it out? Night Lights survey Many thanks, David
  2. David Grann, THE LOST CITY OF Z:
  3. Thanks much to the two board members who contacted me so quickly about these tracks.
  4. Gone forever, apparently...I was just cleaning out my PMs and noticed that the ones from Clem were now attributed to "deleted member."
  5. Hello all, For a Night Lights show I'm working on--if anybody has the tracks listed below, could he or she contact me via PM? Many thanks! Miles Davis Quintet Miles Davis (tp) Sonny Rollins (ts) Red Garland (p) Paul Chambers (b) Art Taylor or Philly Joe Jones (d) radio broadcast, "Cafe Bohemia", NYC, July 13, 1957 Four (Roy's Romp) Ozone 18; Chakra (It) TH 100 MD; Yadeon (J) 502 Bye Bye Blackbird - It Never Entered My Mind Chakra (It) TH 100 MD; Yadeon (J) 502 Walkin' (incomplete) Yadeon (J) 502 * Miles Davis - John Coltrane - Sonny Rollins (Ozone 18) * Miles Davis - Makin' Wax (Chakra (It) TH 100 MD) * Miles Davis - Rare Unreleased Broadcasts (Yadeon (J) 502)
  6. Great thread. Mentioned elsewhere on the board, but have to put in a plug for Josh Berman, OLD IDEA (on Delmark).
  7. Hope you have a great one, Barak.
  8. You might also want to check out Hep's recent Ella Fitzgerald release, which is actually Ella leading the Webb band after his death...no vocals (outside of a few enthusiastic huzzahs from Ella as she urges the band on), but good music. ELLA FITZGERALD: THE EARLY YEARS PART 1 features Ella w/Chick's band while he was still alive: Ella Fitzgerald: the Early Years Part 1
  9. Ambler! There's another mutual interest, Bill. Bought recently: Jeremy Ludkin, THE LENOX SCHOOL OF JAZZ. And got (as an anniversary present) this one, which I'm hoping to read this weekend:
  10. Landlocked Music here in Bloomington has a number of the back issues as well at regular cover price--I'm sure they could ship them to you, Peter.
  11. We're re-airing Satchmo, Take Two: Louis Armstrong At the Movies this week on Night Lights--already posted for online listening at the preceding link, featuring music from some of Satchmo's numerous movies and short features. Also up for online listening on Afterglow, the jazz/ballads/American popular song show that I host: Born On the 4th of July: a Popular-Song Celebration of Independence Day, featuring music from Nat King Cole ("We Are Americans, Too"), Paul Robeson ("Ballad for Americans"), Peggy Lee/Johnny Mercer ("Freedom Train"), Duke Ellington ("Rhapsody in Blue") and much more, including three tracks from the recently-reissued BING AND SATCHMO. A happy 4th to everyone.
  12. Any update on the total?
  13. This is from an old, old Night Lights show--the third one I ever recorded, so please forgive the not-quite-ready-for-prime-time vocal delivery, if you happen across it...but if you scroll in to about 53:55 on the Real Audio file, you can hear O'Hara in 1966 (I think) reading "The Day Lady Died": The Day Lady Died
  14. And a belated website note of thanks.
  15. I agree that he got fairly tedious with THE COLD SIX THOUSAND, but I'll probably read this one anyway, just to complete the trilogy--and with hopes that he's pulled back a bit from the rat-a-tat-tat, see-Pete-shoot style of COLD. I thought that direction for his style worked well for AMERICAN TABLOID and MY DARK PLACES, but it did seem like he went off the rails with it after that.
  16. The shortest since CRYING OF LOT 49, I'd wager. (Unless you count the SLOW LEARNER collection...not sure how many pages that clocked in at.)
  17. Amazon synopsis for the new one:
  18. Man, by his standards this one came out quick! Inherent Vice
  19. FWIW, something I posted on the Night Lights site: From Indiana to Neverland: Michael Jackson
  20. L.A. Times now reporting that city and law enforcement officials confirm Jackson has passed away.
  21. CNN's report says he was revived at his house--that differs from the TMZ report. Will be odd if he's truly passed away. OFF THE WALL and THRILLER were ubiquitous when I was growing up... whether you liked the music or not (and I actually liked quite a lot of the music off those two albums), it was omnipresent in a way I don't think I've heard since. EDIT: L.A. Times says he's in a coma.
  22. That's what TMZ is saying. NPR and other news sources reporting that he's been taken to the hospital after an apparent cardiac arrest.
  23. Same here--10 out of 11 received. My odd man out was the RVG edition of RED GARLAND'S PIANO. Still, 10 CDs for $47 total...worth the wait and a bit of uncertainty.
  24. A belated thanks...we made the goal, due in no small part to contributions from five Organissimo posters.
  25. I'm looking at the page, but I don't see anything for the June 12 show. Can you post the direct link? What appears to be up (not as a download, but an archived stream) is the June 19th program.
