  1. Now listening, David. I think the songbook format is a great basis for shows. Have you done a John Coltrane songbook? Everything from Shepp to big bands ... It's already on tap for September, Bill--will air around the time of JC's birthday. Great minds think alike, eh?
  2. Perhaps somebody will e-mail them this thread...
  3. Saw it in Chicago with Henry Grimes, Margaret, Roy Campbell and Chad Taylor. Michael Wiess was in town as well and stopped in. It was pretty cool. m Sounds like it--especially with that crowd!
  4. This past week's Night Lights show, The Ornette Coleman Songbook: Early Interpretations of a Jazz Pioneer is now archived for online listening. It features recordings of Coleman's music by Art Pepper, Bill Dixon and Archie Shepp, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Jack Wilson, Pee Wee Russell, the New York Contemporary Five, and John Coltrane. Next week: "Young Wynton: Early Marsalis."
  5. Yep--plus the new stadium bites IMO.
  6. Good idea then you can grab lunch at Matt's At The Market. If they don't have it then the Elliott Bay Book Company in Pioneer Sqaure will. That bookstore is always worth a visit. Y'all are making me very nostalgic for my past visits to Seattle. I pretty much lived in that area (Pioneer Square/Elliott Bay Book Company) when I was there before...is Left Bank Books still around? I bought a beat-up copy of Mailer's ADVERTISEMENTS FOR MYSELF there that kept me good company during my time up in Alaska.
  7. I've long wanted to do a Night Lights show about this--folks have already named most of the ones I've got in mind (glad to see you threw in the Pee Wee Russell Impulse/Columbias, Paul), so I'll add only a bit of a curveball: Joe Mooney.
  8. What IS up with their software? I just found an anthology that I've been wanting for quite awhile, at an extremely reasonable price...I went ahead and pulled the trigger, and when I checked back several minutes later the item was no longer listed. So far, so good... I've purchased it, so it's no longer available, I'm thinking. About an hour and a half later I get an e-mail from the seller saying, "Sorry, the item had already sold out and I hadn't had a chance to remove it from inventory yet..." What kind of a lame issue is that? Does Half.com's software truly not automatically remove used items once they've been purchased? I was almost inclined to think the seller (who's very highly-rated) had simply pulled the item because it was mispriced.
  9. Haven't read it either, but thanks for mentioning it here--I'll seek it out.
  10. If anybody has a copy of this, could they contact me off-board? Hoping to use it in an upcoming show...rumored to be up for reissue later this year, but I don't see anything on the horizon yet.
  11. Thanks much, Jim and KU--my interest is definitely piqued.
  12. TTK, you might want to check this out (if you don't already have it):
  13. Anybody here familiar with the Pyramids? A friend of mine recently came across one of their original LPs and was asking me about them--he describes them as a somewhat funkier AACM-type combo. Dusty Groove has several album reissues listed for them.
  14. I wanted to go see this when it was originally on display in Chicago. There's a good book based around it as well.
  15. Fab Four Jazz: the Beatles and Jazz in the 1960s Music from Stanley Turrentine, Woody Herman, Sonny Criss, Lee Morgan, Bud Shank, etc., plus some commentary from historian Michael McGerr. Some links there as well to Martin Williams' parody of fellow critics reviewing Beatles albums, Ella singing "Can't Buy Me Love," and more. Next week: "The Ornette Coleman Songbook: Early Interpretations of a Jazz Pioneer"
  16. 135 guests? This joint's getting crowded...could somebody please pass me the ketchup?
  17. I used "Peace" from this album for the upcoming "Ornette Coleman Songbook" Night Lights show.
  18. No kidding! One of the best ever for sure.
  19. How 'bout a Lazaro Vega marathon on Blue Lake? Of course, that would be more like a gift for us, and not exactly a birthday gift for you...hope you have a wonderful day, LV.
  20. Yikes, that was pretty tough...I scored in the 60-79 percentile on the first two. Too scared right now to take the third...
  21. Keep on smokin'! (Well... you know what I mean...)
  22. Even if the concern ultimately proved to be unfounded, I still appreciate it, Berigan.
  23. Saw this posted over at JC and thought I'd pass it along: Darcy James Argue I've become quite a fan through DJA's blog, where he often posts mp3s of his big band's live performances.
