Well, Doug Ramsey has beaten me to it. I had thought of doing this myself on the Night Lights site, but in his "Other Places" column (essentially a blogroll), Doug has listed Larry's profile here at Organissimo: Rifftides ("Other Places" is on the righthand side of the page, if you scroll down just a bit from the top) Larry's posts here would indeed make for a great blog--as would Jim Sangrey's.

Beautiful show.
-
Yeah, I'm listening now. Wow--where'd they get that tape of Monk introducing "Pannonica"? BBC Radio 4--look under "Tuesday Pick of the Day."
-
Sorry I missed this--she just came up in conversation last week with my friend who writes our early-music show, Harmonia. Does the BBC archive, at least temporarily? EDIT: just noticed JohnS's "listen again" reference--I assume that means either archiving or re-airing. Guess I should just go to the site and take a gander, eh?

Funniest Star Trek Moment Ever?
ghost of miles replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not an actual Star Trek moment, but I love the sequence from The Larry Sanders Show where Larry and the writers are talking to Shatner via a speaker-phone, trying to get him to say "Klingons." At one point Sanders says, "Who was your biggest enemy on Star Trek?" Shatner pauses and says, "Well, DeForest Kelley and I had some problems..." -
Suite History: Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, John Carter and the African-American Odyssey is now archived for online listening. Part 1 and Part 2 of the full interview that I did with historian Michael McGerr for this program are transcribed and posted on the website as well...Michael talks about the historical contexts from which these extended works emerged. (He's quite an Ellington devotee, and I'm hoping that some day he'll undertake a bio of DKE.) Note to MG: there should be a volume control on your RealPlayer box, just to the right of the stream. However, I do know that in the past there was an issue with Night Lights being recorded at too low a volume--I'm pretty sure in the past 1-2 years the engineers have been boosting it a bit.

Nice story from Marc today about listening to a recent Teddy rehearsal over the telephone.

Sad news. I've been meaning to catch THE SEVEN-UPS for awhile now...will still have to seek that out.

Ray Boomhower, ROBERT KENNEDY AND THE 1968 INDIANA PRIMARY. (Out in April from the IU Press) This one's particularly timely, given that the Indiana Democratic primary in May will actually matter for the first time since...the 1968 primary?

George Russell/Bill Evans/Art Farmer - TV Show
ghost of miles replied to garthsj's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I thought it really deserved a thread of its own, so you the man, garthsj! -
Aha! Can you give me idiot-proof instructions on how to listen to this, please Ghost? MG MG, it's actually going to be a repeat, so it's already archived for online listening: Say It Loud: Black-Pride Soul Jazz Do you have RealPlayer? If not, you can download a basic, free version here. EDIT: I went back and looked at the old thread for this show--I think you should just click "open".

Suite History: Duke Ellington, Oliver Nelson, John Carter, and the African-American Odyssey features music from Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige, Nelson's Afro-American Sketches, and Carter's Roots and Folklore: Episodes in the Development of American Folk Music, all extended works that depict the black experience from Africa to slavery and the difficulties of post-emancipation life in America. The program also includes commentary from historian Michael McGerr (I'll be posting a full transcript of our conversation later today on the Night Lights blog). "Suite History" airs Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11:05 p.m. EST on WFIU-Bloomington and at 9 p.m. Central Time on WNIN-Evansville. It also airs tomorrow evening at 10 EST on Michigan's Blue Lake Public Radio. The program will be posted for online listening Monday morning in the Night Lights archives. Note: a future program will be devoted to a more in-depth and singular exploration of John Carter's Roots and Folklore. Next week: "Say It Loud: Black-Pride Soul Jazz."

Marc Myers did a three-part interview/series with Charles last November: Teddy Charles ...Bruce, there's an older Night Lights program that features some of TC's 1950s recordings: Teddy Charles: the Early Avant-Garde (title courtesy of garthsj)

ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
think this is my favorite of the strozier albums i've heard (followed closely by the riverside 2fer and then fantastic fs) don't miss it! I won't--am ordering it now. Not sure when I'll do the Strozier show, but obviously I should have it on hand for that program when it comes around. -

Oh, it's a lonely town... -
Handy turns 75 today--thought I'd up the thread and post a link to this weekend's Night Lights show, now archived: Handy With the Horn It features Handy's Roulette and Columbia sides (many thanks to Clunky and Felser for their assistance here), as well as "Alice in Wonderland" with Mingus. I interviewed Handy by phone a couple of weeks ago and have been posting it in sections on the Night Lights site. He says Mosaic is working on a project involving unreleased Columbia sessions with Michael White...I'm going to drop them a line and bring up the proposed Select configuration of EMI/Roulette material that somebody suggested elsewhere on the board.

Bill, it was on from noon-1 PST...sorry, should've put that in my post. For anybody interested in the show, it's still posted for online listening: We Shall Overcome: Civil-Rights Jazz I know there are some issues with Tacoma--but it sounded cheaper than Seattle, plus Dash Hammett used to live there. (OK, silly reason... biggest motive was that Borders, where I worked at the time, had a store there and would've paid all of my transfer/moving expenses.) The area I love the most out there is the whole Olympic Mountains range.
