AOTW March 26-April 1: Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Album Of The Week
Artists in all walks of aesthetic life tend to be a bit defensive when questioned about influences that seem obvious... I wondered the same thing when I read Guy's post and did not take Holland's denial to necessarily be the end-all of the question. -

Woman Runs Down Teens In Her SUV

Gad, I'm so sick of that... and I'm a so-called "person of faith" myself (a phrase that really sets off the ol' barf-o-meter these days). But I'm sorry, that doesn't make you any better or any worse than anybody else. -
Yes, I'm sorry--here's a direct link to the archives. At this point it's looser than Night Lights, more of a mix program with a featured CD, artist, or sometimes a theme for each show. There are also a few modern/contemporary recordings making their way onto the playlists (I played our Internet hometown heroes Organissimo on one of the very first programs that I did); in any case, right now it's more of a "vibe" show than a thematic/historical one, hopefully good late-night smoking/drinking/wondering jazz, with a strong twist of GAS (aka Great American Songbook). Here's the April-features rundown: April 7--Mulligan Mosaic Select April 14--Songs of the Season (Spring) April 21--Mark Murphy's HIP PARADE/PLAYING THE FIELD & Julie London's JULIE/LOVE ON THE ROCKS. April 28--Blossom Dearie's 80th b-day and Cassandra Wilson's THUNDERBIRD.

Parker and Coltrane were also attacked early on for their "shrill" and "ugly" tones. Being so far removed from their arrival on the scene (and departure from it), it took me years of listening to comprehend how such charges could ever have been made... not that I now validate them, but at least I think I finally got the context. To my modern, relatively-youthful ears, Bird and Trane's tones sound wonderful.

Hello all, I'm trying to put together a Night Lights program about the singer Mary McCall, and am trying to obtain audio copies of two of her LPs (never issued on CD, as far as I'm aware--perhaps in Japan at one time?)--MELANCHOLY BABY and DETOUR TO THE MOON. If anybody can help me, could you possibly drop me a PM? Thanks much in advance! David

Jackie McLean - Destination Out (click to buy) I first heard this album in August 1995, around the time that Blue Note put it out in the Connoisseur series (it's now available as an RVG and as part of the Moncur Mosaic Select set). The pleasantly oppressive nature of the opening Moncur composition, "Love and Hate," and the overall brooding mood of the album served as a perfect soundtrack to Bloomington during that hot, humid, and listless spell in early August, after summer sessions have ended and the students have not yet returned for the fall. Three of the four compositions here are by Moncur, in fact; "Esoteric," which features some terrific vibes playing by Bobby Hutcherson, and the blues "Riff Raff" are the others. This particular incarnation of the McLean/Moncur band has Roy Haynes on drums instead of Tony Williams (not sure why--had he already left for Miles at this point?), and maybe that's why this record seems slightly more subdued--in a good way--than the records made with Williams, which I also love. I know that the subject of "avant bop" is distasteful to some, but to me, this is one of its most successful records.

"The Late Miss D" tonight on Night Lights
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
This program is re-airing tonight and is already archived (drop down to the March 5, 2005 listing). Next week: "Electrifying: Miles Davis at the Cellar Door." -
Verily, you speaketh the truth.

Anybody else amused/irked by Keith Jarrett's recurring addresses to "Marcus" throughout his liner notes here? Kinda ironic, as the last time I remember being irritated by somebody's using this sort of space to settle a personal grudge was G. Early attacking Jarrett in JAZZ (for his remarks about Marsalis).

Duke Ellington Carnegie Hall Concert Jan 1943
ghost of miles replied to skeith's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
(Responding to Ken's post) I thought most of the Carnegie Hall concerts had been reissued on CD as double-discs. Some of the Jan. 1943 performances are taken from a Boston concert. -
Is this from Season 3 on the DVD set? I think I've actually seen this episode in the past coupla years...

I think they're wrong on this one: Airto "eye-air-toe" I remember seeing him live many years ago, and he explained his name by pointing to his 'eye', 'ear' and 'toe'. How about his last name? (Moreira)

Joe, that's a hometown label--in fact, I know the owner from the days when we were both part of the Kirkwood Avenue record-store-clerk community. Talking to him this Thursday about a possible "Profiles" program on him for WFIU... Secretly Canadian is a really happening enterprise.

$$ sent... just PM me if it didn't go through for some reason.

Jordan, thanks for the backstory on that--very interesting. I used only the WNEW broadcast for the show; I agree that it's a more compelling program than the Fresno one. Let's hope that more of those tapes turn up! David I missed the show. Is there an archive? Yes. A bit behind schedule on this, but everything since February should be up and online in the next week or two.

It's finally archived. Open to suggestions for material for a sequel--as I said, had to leave a lot on the cutting-room floor, so to speak.- 17 replies

found a great japanese restaurant, and a great jazz station on the radio. life is good! What's the great station? I still haven't picked up this Warne/Joe, but it's next on the list--esp. after reading Joe's daughter's memoir.

Four Freshmen and Mildred Bailey Running Low!
ghost of miles replied to billyboy's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Scott Wenzel says one is in the works, though he didn't specify... but I doubt he meant the Berry. Hasn't that been pushed back to next year? The Boswell Sisters set is on hold as well, evidently.
