  1. All right, that was 99,000. Do I get a warm-up prize?
  2. C'MON, BABY, SPIN THAT COUNTER!
  3. I remember having a religious-like experience the first time that I saw Coltrane performing on video. It was a black-and-white TV show from around '61--he was playing "My Favorite Things"--and as I watched him play I felt like weeping. A kind of joyous weeping that I'd associate with being in the presence of a strong, benevolent spiritual force.
  4. "Jazz is my religion"--Ted Joans (wish I could find the whole poem to post) Lon, have you ever read Neil Leonard's JAZZ: MYTH AND RELIGION?

    Ran Blake

Joe Milazzo has weighed in with great elan and insight on Blake before. In addition to his postings, there's this 2001 One Final Note article: freedomtocontemplate I love the SONIC TEMPLES that Late touted at the beginning of the thread. In addition to the much-discussed NEWEST SOUND AROUND, I'm also a big fan of PAINTED RHYTHMS (have only V. 1, am still on the hunt for V. 2) and the Silver tribute; I also have a soft spot for UNMARKED VAN. A lot of Blake I haven't heard, though, and I'm looking forward to encountering more of his work.
  6. Whew... I'm just glad that they didn't sign Kenny Loggins.
  7. Man, I would love to be in Dublin come June 16 this year. When my wife and I bought our house several years ago, on June 16, I said, "Hey, we're closing on Bloomsday!" The realtor and the bank people looked at me with polite, restrained smiles... My wife was probably thinking, "Great, schmoe, we're gonna blow it at the last moment!" bloomsday100
  8. verahomepage And this from AMG: For some reason I thought that he'd died recently, but I think I'm confusing him with somebody else who wrote a lot of the liner notes for Capitol's Black and White/Imperial re-issue program--Pete Welding.
  9. I got that one for my dad for Christmas and he was very pleased. Might have to snag a copy for myself...
  10. I like the Cootie Williams and Buddy Rich big-band sides... there's some early Gator Jackson, if I recall correctly... and a lot of Helen Humes as well as Albert Ammons, including the only father/son session (that I know of) with Gene!
  11. No, I didn't, but I don't think I'd be surprised if El Rushbo actually did that!
  12. Heh... and this was before the last Eagles' game: McNabbvsLimbaugh Of course, the most unlikely of backups is coming off the bench for Rush: the ACLU!
  13. As a disgruntled ex-football fan, I am not happy at the prospect of having to see a bunch of overweight kids & middle-aged Hoosiers ambling about in those g.d. blue Colts jerseys again next weekend... The horseshoe really highlights the belly, I gotta say.
  14. Leeway & Jim, I know it's small consolation, but a good chunk of this material is available on this Verve 2-CD set, which I think is still in-print: StuffVerve
  15. Man, that's a rather scary notion--that an in-print Mosaic could just suddenly vanish due to licensing/legal issues. I'm glad that I already have it. Hope this isn't a bad omen for current and in-the-works Verve/Universal Mosaic projects.
  16. Don't have that many, yet, but THE THIRD MAN is my favorite so far.
  17. Outing me in regards to liking the Boswell Sisters, or to carrying on a private correspondence with one of the board's most notorious conservatives? Of course, I must confess to an ulterior motive--I know that you are a liberal at heart, and I am merely attempting to call home the prodigal son, as it were. Didja get my PM back? Regarding the Sam Donahue Heps, a big thumbs-up for HOLLYWOOD HOP and NAVAL BAND V. 1.
  18. Holy smokin' Rockets, Batman!
  19. Hard to believe that BIRTH OF THE COOL, great as it is, is the bestselling jazz album of alltime. Wouldn't it be KIND OF BLUE or TIME OUT? Or--blahhh--one of the Kenny G releases, if count such things we must?
  20. He will be... President-elect Wesley Clark won't be inaugurated until Thursday, January 20, 2005. Don't worry, Conn, you'll still get your Clark tax cut! 7/4, hope you're havin' a great one!
  21. F#@%in' A, man, this gent just does not get it! How do you spell D-E-N-I-A-L?
  22. Ditto! Man, as membership here climbs, there's a birthday every day... well, I'm all for an ongoing celebration. We could use more of 'em!
  23. Happy b-day, 7/4... or should I say 4/4 today?
  24. Happy birthday to a wonderful poster and warmly regarded colleague in the "Politics" forum!
