  1. Interesting. I'd rephrase to say: "We believe in weird things because we have to in order to survive."
  2. Thanks to jhoots for sniffing out a place where this is available: Mostly Other People Do The Killing -- "This Is Our Moosic"
  3. It seems to be on back order with all the usual suspects. A little hard to find, for some reason. I'd love to listen to that one. Appears to be in stock at CD Baby. Thank you.
  4. Very much looking forward to listening to that one.
  5. It seems to be on back order with all the usual suspects. A little hard to find, for some reason. I'd love to listen to that one.
  6. So if you can get it for $2.99 including shipping - go for it. Then be prepared for the real deal: Not cheap but worth more. Yes, I passed on the 1 cent deal, and went with your suggestion. Thanks.
  7. While sniffing around / stumbling around, looking for a place to start with King Oliver, I spied this Louis Armstrong - King Oliver recording listed at amazon marketplace for 1 cent. No track listing that I can see, so (as usual) I have no idea. If anyone has any thoughts on Oliver recordings, I'd appreciate the input.
  8. And one more ... make that two: Billie Holiday -- "Lady Day: The Master Takes and Singles" and King Oliver --"Off The Record: The Complete 1923 Jazz Band Recordings"
  9. Two more on order: Billie Holiday -- "Lady Sings the Blues" Frank Sinatra -- "A Voice in Time: 1939 - 1952"
  10. Ordered tonight while at work: Lester Young -- "The Complete Aladdin Recordings" "Jazz Giants '58" Fletcher Henderson -- "The Big Reunion" Dave Holland Sextet -- "Pass It On"
  11. Not to be contentious, but it seems to me that chess is a game of strategy. What the players are trying to do is defeat an opponent's strategy -- in a rather cold, calculated way. How closely one associates one's "self" with a given strategy seems to me to be a secondary matter -- not an essential tool of the game. And I'm not convinced about the psychological weight you give to a boxer's sense of "self" or the investment he might have in a given outcome. In fact, in general, it's my belief that its often the fans, not the athletes, who invest way too much of themselves in their teams. Often, well-paid athletes can move past defeat quite comfortably. EDIT: A further thought on this psychological aspect to competition. One might argue that extreme physical endurance causes the greatest psychological stress -- I'm thinking of marathon runners or tri-atheletes who must battle what amounts to a survival instinct: the mind telling them to stop subjecting their bodies to extreme physical stress.
  12. Sorry but unless you have blood-splattered pieces, I call "bullshit". That's because you don't play competitive chess and don't have the foggiest idea about it. Competitive chess of course requires a high degree of skill. The general rule of thumb though is, if you can smoke a cigarette while doing it, it's not a sport. (That rules out golf, too, although the only professional golfer I've seen who smokes while he plays is John Daly, and his performances would suggest that indeed you CAN'T smoke while playing golf.) Bowling's out as well under the controversial "smoking" rule (the French hate it). Darts, pool, etc., also. They are all skilled competitions, but not sports, IMHO. And that's not to degrade them. It's just, as Dan suggested, "sport" generally requires some sort of "physical" competition. ... I think. Then again, the dart player might argue that the difference between darts and throwing a javelin is one of degree, so ... Maybe a better title for the thread would be: Did anyone participate in organized competition? Chess and the others would qualify, of course. But then we gotta let in those guys in science competitions and their solar-powered cars, too. It could get wild!
  13. Highlights from a visit to last night's pow wow: Noj's beer sampler; grilled cheese sandwiches; the best wife ever; the incredible Romo; tripping and falling out the door; free Dave Holland CDs that went unloved; the beer mug icon; a keen breakdown of the NBA (we can proceed straight to the playoffs now); the incredible Romo; live as-it-happens 'what are you listening to' reports; 2/3 of the band shows up (one after the other); the incredible TO; weather reports from California, and it rained! Disappointments: No Dan. No Nessa.
  14. Other than the mut fund managers at Vanguard, after my first stock purchase years ago (a dog that went straight downhill) I don't think I've ever purchased anything on the advice of a stock broker, who seem to me to be on par with car salesmen.
  15. Continuing to channel Bill Barton, another rec of his that is a lot of FUN! Mostly Other People Do The Killing -- "Shamokin!!!" Energetic and irreverent. Sound samples here. Jon Irabagon has a tart, Ornette-ish tone. There's a bit of Zappa in these guys.
  16. Wish Bill Barton would check in here. Here's one of his recs from elsewhere that's really nice: Mark Masters Ensemble -- "Farewell Walter Dewey Redman" A big band that swings slightly to the left. Nice and tight. Sound samples here.
  17. So true. When I was playing inline hockey back about 12 years ago or so, a friend of mine and I went to this empty outdoor high school basketball court on a Sunday morning just to skate around and practice passing a tennis ball around, and all of a sudden a couple of pickup trucks pull up with a bunch of guys and some nets and they all piled out and put on their roller blades and grabbed their hockey sticks and next thing you know we have a full on game going for a couple of hours. People flying all over the place. It was like a beer commercial or something. Out of the blue -- poof -- a pickup game of inline hockey on a basketball court in florida. Only time it ever happened. It was a blast.
  18. I am by no means an athlete. But, putting aside the fact that I didn't make the little league team the first time out and so gave up, and putting aside also that I was unsuccessfully recruited by my high school basketball coach (I'm 6-1, and have been since high school) largely because practices took place BEFORE classes began in the morning (zzzzzzzzzz), I have somehow stumbled my way onto two organized sports teams in my life (so far): 1) Pee Wee football. I played tight end. We went undefeated the first year and lost a single game the next. Won the championship both years. 2) Adult in-line hockey team. It was a mish-mash of a league -- no contact, supposedly, but that seemed to vary game to game -- but, we won the championship the only year I played on the team. In both cases I had very little to do with the outcomes. I was an average player who happened to be on teams with some skilled players. But nonetheless, my claim to fame is that I have never failed to win a championship when I've played organized sports. (so don't pick me last in pickup basketball, I'm just sayin' ...) That's my organized sports experience. Anybody else?
  19. That lead prompted me to purchase this one earlier. No sound samples. The Chicago Luzern Exchange -- "Several Lights" This one isn't any sort of ground-breaking hybrid, just a really enjoyable modern big band performance released this year, very much "in the tradition." Spinning it now. Carla Bley & Her Remarkable Big Band -- "Appearing Nightly"
  20. Bad news on the Turrentine "Complete Blue Hour" ... arrived today with glue on playing surface. Couldn't clean. Had to reorder. So, while I was at it, I ordered these also: Paul Gonsalves & Clark Terry Quintet -- "Complete Recordings" Has been lingering on the wish list for a short while. Donnie McCaslin -- "Recommended Tools" Sax, bass, drums trio. Sounds strong. The Chicago Luzern Exchange -- "Several Lights" The tuba sold me.
  21. Well, I put a little elbow grease (wrist grease, more like it) into it with some Windex and paper towel, wiping center to edge, and it seemed to clean the surface to the touch. It feels smooth although the glue left marks on the disc surface. I'm giving my improv cleaning a test now -- so far so good. EDIT: Nope. Still skips. Screw it. This guy's getting his discs back and I'll just reorder from someone who doesn't sniff glue.
  22. Is there anything that will get glue off the playing surface of CDs safely? I've tried my handy-dandy CD cleaner, to no avail. Hardly had any effect at all. The CDs (Turrentine's Blue Hour) arrived today and the glue on the surface renders them unplayable. I'm bummed. It looks like the glue got on the surface from residue left after stickers were removed from the INSIDE of the jewel case. Weird.
  23. Just throwing in a link to the Clean Feed recs thread, for anyone who may not have seen it. They've only been around since 2001, I think, so everything in the catalog is contemporary. Unfortunately, no sound samples at their site. But Squidco carries the label, and does have sound samples. 1) Adam Lane, Lou Grassi, Mark Whitecage -- "Drunk Butterfly" sound samples 2) Mahanthappa, Dresser, Hemingway -- "The Beautiful Enabler" sound samples.
