I'm only casually familiar with Wyntonism (I think I can call it that), but from what you describe Allen, the man seems to be more concerned with keeping the structures in tact which give him whatever authority (and power) he has accumulated, than someone interested in discussing views that diverge from his own -- and threaten that very power structure. (Not an uncommon trait among the highly successful). There's obviously a race component to this era you wanted to discuss with him as well, one he apparently has difficulty with, for whatever reason. It doesn't sound as though he gave you anything of substance to challenge your argument. Dismissing you as an "academic" (meaning, I take it, someone with no "real world" experience) is a rather cowardly attack in this context, IMO -- as if to say you have no business discussing the topic, and akin to you calling him an ivory-tower elitist (which, come to think of it, he may find no objection to?)

Just to follow up, Disc 2 plays fine, and there's an alternate take of "Gee Baby" on it, so I'm not going to fuss over it. But the one I received is a Connoisseur, fwiw. I may have misunderstood the first reference to that. Anyways, thanks for the feedback.
-
We probably have the Euro edition! Probably - it was a "Connoisseur" wasn't it? My copy's in the attic so I couldn't say for sure (I listened to it on the PC). Yep. Connoisseur. What's the deal? Steer clear?

Here's the history: I ordered a used copy. It arrived with glue residue on the playing surface of disc one. I tried to clean it. But no use. It skipped on Track 2 (Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You). So I sent it back, re-ordered it from cduniverse (I think). Then they tell me it's on back order, so ... OK ... I cancel THAT order and just order a new copy from amazon. It arrives today. I put on the white gloves and gently place disc one in the cd player and ... ... it starts skipping in the exact same spot that the first used copy with glue residue skipped! Exact same place. I actually went back to check that packaging to make sure I didn't somehow reorder the same used copy again from the first guy. Nope. Brand new copy. Track 2, disc 1 skips. Anyone else had this happen? The rest of disc 1 (haven't gotten to second disc yet) seems to play fine, so I'm giving up. Maybe both the used one I got first and this one were from a bad pressing and the glue had nothing to do with it. Oh yeah, the seller of the used copy said that it played fine in his player before he shipped it to me. But thinking the glue on the inside of the jewel case was the culprit, I didn't put much stock in that at the time.

Very cool. I guess we could say he must have enjoyed the session, hands down.

As previously noted, exciting project. This approach sounds exactly right, for seasoned and unseasoned listeners alike (of which I'd throw myself in the latter group, certainly when it comes to the blues). It pretty much begins and ends with Robert Johnson and Son House over here, so a compilation like this will be invaluable. The Blues -- It seems like just such a difficult topic to get a hold of (hence, the working title of the project, perhaps), and aside from the music itself, I'm looking forward to any discussion of how this music came to be and unfolded. As I think you've already said, the writing will be a daunting task.

Smiling police officers are good. The gun trick is good, too! I hope the learning curve isn't that steep. -
By the way, this family now has 17 kids with another on the way! Not nearly as motivated as this guy though.

Ten Records You Might Want To Add to Your Collection

I love these lists, too. Except they can be expensive. I'm familiar with only a few on your list -- "Groovalephia," "Air Time" and "Nonaah" -- and agree wholeheartedly on those three quite different albums. Fred Anderson's pretty much a "can't miss," and the Marsh I should nuzzle over to the old wish list. thnx -
Hm. Ordered these Dec. 3 and just got a "will be shipped within next 24 hours" notice today. Not to complain, but this seems atypically slow for Mosaic. In the past, orders have arrived within days -- surprisingly fast. Maybe it's the time of year. Or maybe it's the law of averages.

Correction .. also the Adderley disc. "Know What I Mean?" Anyways, the idea of Evans in what I imagine is a little more laid back quintet with Hall-Hubbard and Hall-Sims is what initially caught my interest.
-
Do you have his sideman dates w/Oliver Nelson & George Russell? Or w/the Tony Scott quintet w/Jimmy Knepper? Highly recommended, all of them. Some of my most favorite Evans, possibly my most favorite. I have very little Evans. Just the Village Vanguard sets, I believe. I'll check into these, thanks.

What happened to tackle football? I was watching some of the Jets game today and it seemed like every running play the defenders would just try to wrap up the running back by grabbing him up high, go for the ball, and the back would move the pile 10 yards downfield and STILL never hit the ground. The refs just blow the whistle when the scrum stops moving forward. It's stand-up scrum football, is what it is. ... I see the same deal in other games, and this high "tackling" bullshit is part of the reason Ronde Barber kept getting planted by galloping Panther running backs last week. Is this a technique they're teaching these guys? It ain't working. Bring back tackle football. /rant Lets see if the Giants and Cowboys remember how to play tackle football.

Thanks. ... Not being really big into Evans other than his better-known trio and solo albums I just wasn't aware of him playing in any quintet sessions, really -- other than Miles Davis. Hall intrigues me as much as Hubbard and Sims.
-
Looks interesting. Is anyone familiar? Dusty Groove has a brief rundown. Bill Evans -- "The Interplay Sessions, With Freddie Hubbard and Zoot Sims" (separately)
