Newspapers are being replaced by something better, more relevant. Us. Here. Now. That's good for democracy, I think! Yeah, nothing builds a more perfect union like being the center of your own universe. Maybe you missed it. By "Us. Here. Now." I mean the immediacy and interaction of the internet. Instant news. Instant fact check. Real-time dialog (even among people with whom you may disagree ... gasp!). Many more points of view than can be represented in a single newspaper. You might be less informed now than you were from reading your afternoon daily 10 years ago. You'd be in the minority, I'm guessing. Me, I have access to every latest poll out there, can watch a story break in the morning and be debunked by noon. Engage in discussion in forums like this one. Seems to have a little more depth and immediacy than a newspaper page with 8-hour old stuff in it. That said, I love newspapers. I work for one. I just don't think they're economically feasible anymore. Advertisers will determine the tipping point.

Congratulations to the Phillies. Clearly the better team. I feel good for the city of Philadelphia tonight.

Christian Science Monitor ends print edition
papsrus replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The internet. The daily paper had a good run, but it's coming to an end. Eventually every paper will be online only. It only makes sense from a cost perspective and number of eyeballs perspective. Once the tipping point is reached with advertising, they'll all roll over one after another. the end. -
happy birthday.

That guy! Couldn't TBS sell any ads? Frank TV, Frank TV, every freakin' inning. Geez. How can you be saying that you're "losing interest"?? Seriously, it's comments like that that make people say that the MLB should pull out of Florida because the fan support isn't there. Can you imagine a fan from Boston, New York, or Philly saying that about a World Series that involved their team? No way. My comments about the series being kind of a snoozer make people say MLB should pull out of Florida? Ease back on the no-doze, Boze. And yes, if I try real hard I can imagine fans from REAL baseball towns bailing on their team when they play badly. pffft. Please. The Rays are flat and Philly wasn't exactly lighting it up before last night. And it's more than just good pitching dominating the offenses. Fact is, the memorable moments of this series include a healthy dose of bad base running, almost no clutch hitting (prior to Sunday) and a 30-foot game-winning hit against a 5-main infield. Forgive me if I'm a little nonplussed. Bottom line: I know the way the Rays are playing doesn't come close to the way they played all year up until the series. The ALCS was way more charged. And I'm guessing the Phillies leaving dozens of guys on base (before last night) isn't exactly their MO either. So all in all, there's just been a noticeable drop-off in the level of play, IMO. Sometimes the Super Bowls are duds, too. Doesn't mean anyone's lost interest in "the game."

I'm losing interest myself, which is cruel irony. The season, September, the AL and NL playoffs were all much more compelling than this. I'm not crazy about FOX. Too much annoying advertising and stupid graphics constantly crawling all over the screen. Pissed they started last night's game at 10:06. Play a freakin' day game!

Very good to see you back, MG. And yes, consider a mac.

You must really be head over heels.

It's never, ever beyond you. At least that's my understanding of the whole deal. Wish I'd thought of that ...

Someone whom I consider to be wise once told me that to have a truly original thought is a fairly rare thing in life. We do seem to spend an awful lot of time passing around information that is already known in one form or another. We learn things, commit them to memory and try to put them to some use. Not much beyond that for most people, I'd guess. Musicians, and artists in general, probably have a better shot at achieving this "original thought" than people who are not quite as creative. I guess that kind of goes without saying, "creativity" being what it is and all. So, as silly as it sounds on its face, I'd like to have a truly original thought sometime. It's probably beyond me at this point, but you never know. I'll head straight to the patent office if something occurs to me, and that's where you'll find it when I'm gone.

What do you think of the "I came across..." thread

I've really enjoyed it. Many thanks for sharing, I say. -
How is all this financial craziness affecting you...

Yes. Apparently that's what the Democratic Party did here, according to some folks. -
That is a fine album. Some discussion here. Thanks for pointing me to this thread, fantastic album indeed! Speaking of which, Holland has been a part of some really great albums, hasn't he? -- "Extensions," "Conference of the Birds," Braxton's "Dortmund," and "Montreux/Berlin," "Circle, Paris Concert," "Bitch's Brew," to name a few. Pretty amazing. He's also on Stanko's "Balladyna," which has been getting some play in these parts recently.

I heard on NPR today (well, yesterday) that as highly leveraged as U.S. households are, at something like $1.35 in debt for every $1 of income, households in Great Britain are even more leveraged, to the tune of something like $1.70 of debt for every $1 of income. And, as in the United States, it's mainly tied in to the real estate bubble. This surprised me. -
Is everybody holding their collective breaths? Lost interest? What? Game 3 is huge, obviously, but seems to be more of a must-win for the Phillies than the Rays. The pitching match up seems to favor the Rays, but we'll see. As with the Boston series, all the Rays have to do is take one in Philly and they bring it back home. And, ESPN should just let Kruk wear his Philly jersey and wave his pom pons. We'd all feel better about it.

You're welcome. And thanks to WB3 for starting the AOTW thread on it.

The real world, i've heard of it, it seems to be a pretty exciting place full of wackos, tell me more please. It's on TV! Consult your local viewer guide.

I agree with you. Darling is knowledgeable and pretty even-handed during Mets broadcasts (no cheering in the press box).
