  8. I pretty much watch baseball and that's it. ... Some ESPN news during the day, but zero cable or network news programming. The occasional DVD, but that's pretty rare, too. Can't say the TV is never on, but it's rarely on during the day, and at night if it is on, it's baseball, so ...

  10. Don't believe so. But the Brewers' appeal has been denied, according to ESPN.
  11. I agree. It certainly is hard to argue that it was a "clean hit," and it probably should have been scored an error, IMO, but it wasn't, so ... too late now. I wonder how long is appropriate to wait? Given Dan's argument above, would it have been appropriate for the scorer to change it to an error in, say, the ninth inning? Or the eighth? It's a slippery slope. I'd say it's perfectly acceptable to change a score by the start of the next half inning, certainly. ... Would you agree the window has closed now?
  12. That should definitely have been a no-hitter, IMO. Morgan was saying tonight -- and I agree with him on this -- that the first hit of the game should be a clean one. No written rule, but accepted practice. And that certainly wasn't a clean hit, from what I saw on the replays.
  13. Rays keep rolling and the peeps are back in the park again after those pathetic crowds for the Jays and Angels. My faith is somewhat restored in the fan base and I'm looking forward to September again! Yankees on deck!
  14. New Orleans gets all the press, but Biloxi was the center of where Katrina hit and was leveled. Many members of my family live about 5 miles from Biloxi, including my Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, Nephew and various cousins. It looks like this storm is going to veer more towards New Orleans than Biloxi this time so I'm hopeful that everyone will come through all right. Interesting quote from my Mother yesterday: "Hopefully New Orleans will be spared so we don't have to listen to them complain for the next 3 years. Here in Mississippi we picked ourselves up and got on with our lives, all they've done (New Orleans) has been to whine non-stop since Katrina". The right side (roughly 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock) is the business end of the storm, so if it makes landfall to the west of her, she'll almost surely get a ton of rain. I'm sure you're both aware of that. ... Hope all in your family stay safe. These things are obviously not to be fucked with.
  15. Do any members live in the path of this thing? If so, they're probably not logging on here to mess around. It looks eerily familiar, this one.
  16. Just now ordered a used copy of: Ellery Eskelin, Andrea Parkins, Jim Black -- "One Great Day" Also have on order two others from this band: "The Secret Museum" and "12 (+1) Imaginary Views"
  17. Seed Magazine Where science and culture collide.
  18. Upgraded to category 4 ... in other words, a motherfucker. Time to run. These maps should update as storm progresses.
  19. 20 ... duh
  20. I love the waiter refusing him a second bottle of wine. Any Washington waiter who dared do that to a Cabinet member would find himself out of a job -- and probably out of town -- in a hurry.
  21. Just placed an order for these two companion discs: Roscoe Mitchell and the Transatlantic Art Ensemble -- "Composition / Improvisation Nos. 1, 2, & 3" Evan Parker and the Transatlantic Art Ensemble -- "Boustrophedon"
  22. Check the toaster. Mystery solved. It's in the mail!
  23. Went to the Rays-Jays game Wednesday night. Good game. The people who were there were into it. But damn ... pathetic attendance. Heard on ESPN the Rays have the lowest August attendance in MLB. That's just sad. I think the sagging economy combined with a shitty ballpark in a bad location are partly to blame. They could probably promote the team better, too, with TV spots featuring local celebs like Dickie V and Hulk Hogan whipping up some excitement. But really, I got a front row seat, press box level right above the Rays dugout for $28. That's a great seat for a great price, I think. You don't have to drop $100 to go to a ballgame. Shit, I've been to movies and dropped more than $28 once you add in popcorn and watered-down soda (the biggest ripoff known to man). Anyways, just disappointed that for whatever reason, people won't go out to see a first-place team in a playoff race unless Kool and the Gang are giving a post-game concert. Weird. ... I would guess a waterfront ballpark might change that, but who knows ... EDIT: plus, now that football season is starting, I wouldn't be surprised to see interest in the Rays totally evaporate.
  24. Meanwhile, the hunt for the shirt continues. Bags have been searched. Calls have been made. ... ... We're awaiting further evidence. Perhaps by lunch we'll know more.
  25. ... and the [citation needed] in the end, scientific work at its best... We'll get right on that.
