Anyone hip to this release? Braxton / Graves / Parker -- "Beyond Quantum" Trio sounds intriguing. Drooling a little, but if anyone's heard it ... comments?

Thanks for posting the obituaries. Learning of a person and his or her accomplishments only upon their death is better than not knowing them at all.

On order ...

Went down to my local Boogie Woogie used CD store today for a fix and .... GASP! ... empty. Closed!! ... moved inventory to another location a little out of the way. So anyways, came home and soothed my disappointment by ordering this one, prompted by this thread, actually: Mauger (Mahanthappa, Dresser, Hemingway) -- "The Beautiful Enabler" (Clean Feed)

Thanks for all the suggestions. Great list MG! ... I'll mine this thread some more, but for now I've placed orders for "Boss Tenor," as it seems to be high on a lot of folks' lists, and the "Up Tight"/"Boss Soul" disc as well (which can be had for a song through Newbury Comics). Appreciate the input.

Quit yur bitchin! You won the game, you have one of the biggest leads of the season. You wanna talk infuriating? How about having your ace (in name only because he's pitching like 2007 was the fluke and 2006 is the reality) give up NINE FUCKING RUNS en route to a pathetic 15-4 shellacking at the hands one of the crappiest offenses in the majors, to complete a sweep at home and leave you with no wild card lead at all? That's fucking infuriating. You've got a point there. (Go Cubs?)

Hey ... this is cool. I do believe that weather map above is updating itself. The cone has shifted slightly to the west, so if that shift continues over the next 24 hours, we could dodge the worst of it in Southwest Fla. ... It's always a weird feeling hoping these things don't hit you, but you know that they're going to hit somebody, so in effect you're hoping it hits somebody else.

Despite the best efforts of their patchwork bullpen to blow a 7-2 lead (loading the bases in the 9th and issuing an intentional walk to Hamilton to force in a run and bring the potential WINNING run to the plate!!!), the Rays hang on at Texas and open up 4.5 game lead in AL East. Coming home for three with the mighty Angels (Tropical Storm Fay notwithstanding). Somebody explain to me how a quality major league relief pitcher like Balfour suddenly can't throw the ball anywhere near the plate when he's in a closer situation (in fact, he threw the first ball in the Hamilton intentional walk right over Navarro's head and to the freakin' backstop). He literally lost the plate completely out there tonight. There was no way he was going to find it again. ... Just throw strikes and let your defense do its thing. These guys come in and suddenly think they have to strike everyone out. Then they start overthrowing, nibbling, bouncing the freakin' ball off the plate ... Arghhhhh ... Infuriating!!

Was just nosing around for some information on Gene Ammons and stumbled across this thread. Any further ideas on where to start with Ammons would be appreciated.

That Smoker is a monster. Was just listening to him on Braxton's Charlie Parker Project. -

Speeding / Traffic Ticket Blues

It's not just Valdosta - it's the whole stretch of I-75 in Georgia (Atlanta possibly excepted). My family is from the Tallahassee area and it was the habit of my relatives to call the Georgia Highway Patrol the Yiddish word for "thieves." I will say this -- the closer you get to Atlanta on 75, the crazier the driving gets. ... We were driving north of Macon a few years ago, heavy, heavy downpour, zooming along in three or four lanes of traffic and all of a sudden this wheel bounces by in front of us. ... ... There was no stopping to see what happened, but I figured somebody more-or-less beside us had slid off into the ditch and a wheel came loose. Mother-in-law snoozing in the back seat never knew what happened. -

Yes, be afraid, be very afraid ... I was just careful, very careful. It was pretty obvious what was going on....the changing speed limits and the cops sitting around all over the place. I knew something was up. Yeah, I guess that would be a tip off. ... These small-town cops, not the most sophisticated bunch. In fact, like the Valdosta operation I witnessed, sometimes they make no bones about it, it's just full-on quota time. ... Or time to replenish the slush fund. -

Yes, be afraid, be very afraid ... I believe that's the one. Probably the main source of revenue for the town. I know there's a stretch of I-75 around Valdosta, Georgia -- just over the state line from Florida -- that is also a notorious speed trap. I've seen cops stationed on overpasses pointing their speed guns at cars driving below them on I-75, and a line of four or five patrol cars ready to go after anyone the guy on the overpass targets. It's quite a system they have. AAA also warns about that stretch. They're a little touchy in Virginia, too, I know. -

"Bonkers on the clarinet." I'm all for that!! ... Sounds like a winner, Bev. (And the cover art will work beautifully in the inevitable "Album Covers Showing Hands Holding Stack of Paper" thread.) -
Among the recent purchases I've made, I'm quite looking forward to this one: Lane / Grassi / Whitecage -- "Drunk Butterfly" Tight review here. The nut graph (for me): Any music that recalls Texier is worth investigating. Add to it "warm, melodic and rhythmic" with free improvisation ... I'm in.

There's a town here in central Florida that is so notorious for it's speed traps that it's singled out by AAA. The highway (301) runs through the middle of town and the speed limit seems to change every few blocks, so unless you know you're driving through a speed trap, you'll get nailed if they're out there. Haven't had a ticket in a loooooooong time, thankfully. How far over the speed limit for a $270 fine? -
The cocktail as a total sensory experience (apparently). LINK The nut graph:

Sunny and clear now but ... Tropical Storm Fay is headed this way. I'm sitting smack dab in the middle of the projected path cone for Tuesday, it looks like. Just in time to kick off my vacation. And for extra bonus points, my freakin' insurance company is trying to dump me because of some old growth trees near the home. Bastards. (I had 'em trimmed. Not cutting them down. Arborist said they pose no threat. Pictures and letter on the way.) Looks like we're in for plenty 'o' rain and a big blow though.

Upton was benched Saturday for lack of hustle on the base paths Friday. Maddon yanked him in the middle of the sixth inning Friday after he dogged it to first with one out and the Rangers completed a double play to end the inning. That's the second time in the past few weeks he's had his ass planted on the bench for not running it out on the base paths. ... Great fielder, nice hitter, leads the team in steals, but apparently not the brightest bulb.

Must have been one hell of an expedition for those fortunate souls who first settled in these-here parts. ... Talk about putting a place on the map! -
