  1. Stay positive. Laugh, smile and enjoy life. I'm sure it's a good thing.
  2. Maybe catchers should start throwing punches at the plate (with the ball in the glove, of course) when a baserunner is clearly about to plow them into the ground. One of the toughest positions in sports, IMO.
  3. I am not a musician but I've been an artist in other endeavors. I'm pretty sure that this is not the primary purpose of music, unless you are a pretty vapid musician. The primary purpose of art in general resides in personal issues with the artist himself. Artists make art for themselves. It's great if others end up appreciating it, but we make music, or paint pictures, or write books, or create chess games for ourselves primarily. But then I'm being picky here. I wouldn't necessarily quibble with this. "Providing pleasure" vs. "generating income" was the main idea. Simply looking at music from two different points of view. Listeners are generally pretty focused on the "pleasure" part and don't think too much about the "generating income" part, I would guess.
  4. Well, aside from thinking that the primary commercial purpose of music is to "earn money for the artist" (when has the primary purpose of any business been to earn money for labor instead of for ownership? And I say that with no animus whatsoever.) I think this is a false dichotomy which you set up. No, not false. Incomplete. Incomplete because there are listeners such as myself who are interested in recordings for more than simple "entertainment". We want to study the music, the sociology, the...thing around and within the music. And we do spend money, lots of it, on legit product, including (especially including) legit releases that we have first encountered elsewhere (including the old "mix tapes" from long ago). When I do download, it's not to "get some cool shit for free". It's because an opportunity has presented itself to explore something that I, for whatever reason, consider relevant that would not, as of this juncture, been available elsewhere, for reasons completely outside my control. I do feel an obligation to download ethically, and I do feel an obligation to "follow through" as appropriate. And if I am not in the majority now, I ask you this - when was I ever in the majority? Railing against the internet and what it has spawned will not create higher ethics. It';s happened, it's here, and barring some global reign of totalitarian oafishness, it ain't gonna go away. Higher ethics will create higher ethics, and the first step towards that is recognizing reality, not denying it. I hear you. And I'm not doubting there are fuzzy lines here. But ... for the vast majority of those downloading this music, I would assume it is for their listening pleasure, not study. And in any case, one might make the argument that there is little distinction between the two in the end.
  5. I think there's really a dichotomy between music's primary purpose (to provide enjoyment to the listener) and it's commercial purpose (to earn money for the artist). Those who see no problem in acquiring OOP music for free because there's no other way to acquire it are seeking to fulfill the first purpose. Those who would argue that doing so ultimately undermines the artist are seeking to fulfill the second purpose. I'm not sure there's a way to reconcile the two. Listeners may simply have to choose for themselves which is more important. I have to come down on the side of the artist. If grabbing this music for free undermines the efforts of people such as yourself in some way, it's not worth it, is it?
  6. I don't see anything unusual here ...
  7. Damn ... for a second there ...
  8. Really? I spent years trying to convince her that 4-1/2 inches was 7! Just PM me the manual, in pdf or text . It might sound better if you describe it as "24 bit word length". And never mention new High Resolution format. Uh ... I think you fellas need to let your partners get a word in here on the topic.
  9. Yeah. Any drug that has you thinking you're dying is not helping you.
  10. Lets just hope he doesn't run into anyone in the joint who's carrying a blade. ... Could be trouble. (He looks a little like Nick Nolte in that mug shot. ... a kinder, gentler Nick Nolte, frankly.) ... no wait, Tom Delay, that's who he looks like ..
  11. I knew it. ... you sly dog you. (and, ah ... enjoy your lazy, crazy, hazy Saturday ... )
  12. They have, pending physicals
  13. Cellmate Jackhammer Johnson: "Whaddya in for?" Walendowski: "Uh ... just kick the shit out of me now and get it over with."
  14. The pup in my avatar is named Butter. ... Why, I'm not sure. She came that way.
  15. This is something that's been very apparent to me for a while as well. Organissimo is hands-down the most interesting and free-flowing board that I've stumbling into. ... What a concept!
  16. Ah ... you're a softy then. Good for you.
  17. This is the greatest depressing day of all time.
  18. We added an iMac at home a couple of months ago. I don't (can't) use it, but my girlfriend loves it and agrees it is superior. Wait a minute! You can't use it, as in you don't know how it works? ... I would humbly suggest you get your girlfriend to give you some lessons (heh-hem, rarely a bad idea in general) ... and I think you'd find it easier, faster and more intuitive (at least until the viruses descend) than those clunky old PCs. (I use both -- PC at work, Mac at home and mu-u-u-u-u-ch prefer Macs after having been a PC user for many years.)
  19. No, I'll check it out, thanks.
  20. The Sox need to beat back the Yankees this weekend. If they take that series, I look for them to start kicking it into high gear. If the Rays don't make a move for a right fielder who can hit, they're toast. Hinske was falling all over himself against the Royals last night. Looked like a damn Little Leaguer.
  21. I don't understand that belief at all. The man had just hit a clutch home run in the ninth inning, with two outs, on the road, against the best closer in the game, and on a ridiculous technicality, had been called out and his team went from being ahead to being the losing team. I don't think any reaction could qualify as "over the top" in that situation. I think that situation might have seen the same reaction from Manny Being Manny, which would be as far from "over the top staged theater" as you can get. I see nothing but an expression of total rage and frustration and disbelief. Absolutely nothing theatrical or over the top or Piniella-like whatsoever. I don't know ... he came flying out of that dugout as if someone had just shot his dog or something. I guess I just tend to take the antics of these athletes with a grain of salt. His rage may have been sincere, but if that's the case, I'm not sure I'd want to be around the guy when something happened that was really worth getting pissed about. Funny, I had a co-worker say yesterday (in all seriousness) that he thought the Yankees should have been fined or somehow penalized for creating the whole incident in the first place. ... Might be a little Yankee-hating going on there.
  22. I always saw the Brett meltdown as a bit of staged theater, (is it obvious?) much like a Piniella tantrum. A little too over the top (a lot over the top, actually) to be taken seriously. Brett was a great player, but this has become his most memorable moment, for many. I wonder how he feels about that?
  23. Welcome to the fun house! ...
  24. "Charlie Parker -- A Studio Chronicle 1940-1948" The reviews say this one includes all the Dial and Savoy masters, plus additional material. And J&R has it for $29. I have a paltry amount of Parker on hand, so this seemed like a good way to immerse myself a little more. Also have the new Organissimo disc on order, and some stuff from Dan.
  25. Great info. Parker is one of the giants who is sorely underrepresented in my house. So ... after considering The Complete Dial & Savoy Master Takes, I decided to go instead with A Studio Chronicle 1940-1948, which apparently includes all the Dial and Savoy masters, plus ... including "six key Parker/Gillespie tracks from early 1945 that are included on the Rhino, plus Sarah Vaughan backed by Parker/Gillespie on four tracks," according to an amazon reviewer. They seem to prefer the sound quality here as well. Picked it up at J&R for $29. ...
