parentally sanctioned violence
papsrus replied to kenny weir's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I enjoyed the comment at the end congratulating the girl and her dad for some good shooting. Yep, that was some real fine marksmanship there, all right. Dandy. -
Jeff, do you know why on earth the city of New Orleans has put a moratorium on issuing new licenses for live music venues? And is that moratorium confined to North Rampart, or is the restriction more widespread? There must be some logic behind it, but on its face this seems like a really bad, bad idea. I can sympathize with the situation Donna and her husband, Charlie, now find themselves in. Broken down building, uninterested landlord, health issues, the demands of her second job. Sad nonetheless.

That is depressing news Jeff. I'm just home for a second, but I'll check your link as to the reasons for the closing later. As you know, when I went by in the summer there was a sign on the door that said, "Closed, Gone Fishing." At the time, for whatever reason the sign didn't give the impression of a temporary closing, although I assume it opened again after that for the summer at least. Seems the seed was already planted though. James

Thanks for posting that. Comes across as a very gentle, even and thoughtful person.

Interesting couple of snippets at TPM today with a jazz theme; This one's a quick email from a correspondent in Istanbul raving about a festival going on there now. This more interesting item talks about the Howard Theatre in DC, Atlantic Records' Ahmet Ertegun and after-hours jam sessions at "the ambassador's residence." Accompanying the article is this photo of Nesuhi Ertegun, Herb Abramson, Ahmet M. Ertegun, Mezz Mezzrow, Jay Higginbotham, Art Hodes, Lou McGarity, Henry Allen, Lester Young, and Sadi Coylin at the Turkish Embassy at one of the original events, standing in front of a massive bust of Mustafa Kemal.

Can you hummus a few bars?

Just illustrates that some of the most popular topics are started while under the influence.

I say you put the 1 millionth post up for bid on eBay.

Do we get to make new picks?

Anyone who had the Pirates and Orioles in the WS, you're officially out. Me, I'm liking the Reds. Votto is the Canadian Club. And now they've got that Chapman dude throwing 103? I like the Reds.

That's a donnybrook all right.

Columbia box of 25 classic jazz albums
papsrus replied to crisp's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Pardon the dumb question, but what's the theme here? Seems a little scattered. Having Louis Armstrong plays W.C. Handy and Heavy Weather in the same box set doesn't really do it for me. -
Welcome back Bruce. And thank you for the music.

I was waiting for someone to mention IE. That thing is without a doubt the biggest, ugliest pig out there. Wouldn't go near it if I didn't have to from time to time at work. Awful shit. And the Windows platform sucks. IMHO, YMMV, etc., etc.

In bikinis, that might help. With a drawing for some lucky fan to, ah, run the bases with 'em after the game? I went to one game a few weeks ago and there was some kind of bingo game everyone around me was playing. There's always some excuse: It's a football state; there's the beaches; it's a bad economy; a lot of folks are transplants (or transplant recipients). Whatever, they ought to be packing the place this time of year.

Anybody want a first-place baseball team? Seems nobody in Tampa-St. Pete does. Under 12,000 for the Jays game last night. Pathetic. Maybe folks will be guilted into breaking 15K tonight? Yeah, I've only been to a couple of games myself this year, but I live an hour away and work nights. If I lived in Tampa-St. Pete and had a day job, I'd damn sure be going to see a team with the best record in baseball at least a couple of times every home stand. You can get great seats for under $40! Great seats. And you can get in the place for as low as ten bucks. WTF? I've tried to rationalize the low attendance at the Trop in the past, but I have to wonder if a new stadium would make any difference at all.

Well, I don't know about your teaching skills, but you sure don't know how to drive. You just blew right through a stop sign.

Welcome back MG. You are missed during your absences.

What's more worrisome is the apparent inability of an English teacher to grasp a clarification. Even if the initial sentence was subject to misinterpretation (I did not read it the way Goodspeak did, but ... ) a crystal-clear clarification has been made. So what's the point of continuing to intentionally misinterpret what was said?

Yeesh. I liked Posey in his FSU days. He sure has made an immediate impact.

Good to get that out of the way now. Better that than the shoulder. Schilling was just illustrating Strasburg's mechanical problems on ESPN. He should be fine -- maybe even better than before -- after Tommy John. The mechanics may be another story.

Sorry. Couldn't let this pass. Your argument above amounts to the following: 1) Group A doesn't hit more home runs after taking steroids, so that proves that steroids have no effect on home runs. 2) Group B does hit more home runs after taking steroids, so that is evidence of nothing in particular. Do you see how you uncritically accept evidence that supports your already-held beliefs, and reject any evidence that challenges your already-held beliefs? Is it possible that Group B includes more players who are already power hitters? Do you reject this possibility without knowing the answer? In any case, whether you believe or don't believe steroids help a power hitter hit more home runs, there is no question that steroids aid overall performance, recovery, etc. Again, you seem to be the only person in America who rejects this.

No. But whatever ...

You make a very good point. Now if only Clemens and Bonds had the courage to say the same thing.
