papsrus replied to BillF's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
More Trad Jazz Radio out of Wassenberg, Germany, this rainy afternoon. Most recent playlist: Preservation Hall Jazz Band -- "Jaffe's Struttin' Blues" (album: New Orleans, Vol. 4) Graeme Hewitt's High Society Jazzband -- "If You Were the Only Girl In the World" (album: Walking With The King) Ellington -- "Sophisticated Lady" (album: Ken Burns Jazz) The Original Wildcat Jass Band -- "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead (You Rascal You)" (album: I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) -
Longoria breaks up no-hitter with two out in ninth.

Rays are fixin' to get no-hit for the third time this season, a day after getting walloped by the Jays.

It's a 2008 European reissue: Amazon U.K.. I wouldn't be surprised if it uses the same masterings as the now deleted big American box. Thanks Hans. Reviews at amazon decidedly mixed on the American box. Maybe best to stick with the JSP?
-
Nice article, thanks. I can't imagine ever tiring of these beautiful recordings. I have the JSP set and would love to track down the one above. A quick look around amazon didn't turn it up. (user error, I'm sure). Any hints?

OK, this Trad Jazz Radio station is playing a lot of stuff by European trad jazz bands -- Original Victoria Band (Dutch), the Hot Antic Jazz Band (French), Loverfield Jazz Band (Swiss). Some of the bands have web sites, sometimes with an option to translate to English, sometimes not. Placing an ordering in Dutch is just too much for me to manage, I'm afraid. I would love to dig into this stuff a little bit but these bands seem to be virtual unknowns at the usual outlets. Anyone know of any websites that might carry some of this music? In the meantime, enjoying the hell out of these European bands. -
Nats-Dodgers here.

Back with AussieDixieland/Ragtime radio on 365. Right now -- "You Rascal You" performed by a raucous outfit called Roger Bell's Pagan Pipers. G-R-E-A-T! -
Zobrist being back in the lineup will hopefully help dampen the impact a bit.
-
I'm with you. Very nice!

Buddy DeFranco -- "1949 - 1952 Studio Performances" (chronological classics) I like snagging some of these Chrono Classics when they're offered at a reasonable price, as this one was ($9 and change, new).

During a discussion of that pop-up that hit one of the catwalks at the Trop the other day, and Maddon's subsequent complaint that the club needed a new ballpark, Bob Ryan opined tonight on ESPN's 'Around the Horn' that Tampa Bay shouldn't have a team, doesn't deserve a team, based on the historically poor attendance at the Trop. Grumpy old fart. Somebody needs to relocate his ass to St. Pete. First of all, the Rays are averaging 22,617 a game this year. Not great, and down slightly from last year, but not too far off the average attendance in Cincinnati (24,600), San Diego (25,600) and within shouting distance of the White Sox (26,100). All three of those clubs are having equally great years and play in mu-u-u-u-u-u-ch nicer ballparks. I suppose Ryan thinks Cincinnati, San Diego and Chicago don't deserve teams either? When you combine the bad economy, the shit hole that is the Trop, and the odd location of the stadium itself, what you get is people staying home to watch the team on TV. Those numbers, of course, are way up, as I recall. Put a new stadium in Tampa, near Raymond James Stadium maybe, and you'll get good crowds. I'm guessing Ryan secretly wants the Rays disbanded and the roster divvied up between the Red Sox and Yankees.

Just tried 365 for the first time and have selected Mostly Bop from Los Angeles and am getting "Charge Account" by Dave Lambert and Buddy Stewart with Red Rodney's Beboppers. Pretty good for a first attempt! Checking out Mostly Bop with you now. Red Norvo -- Bernie's Tune. Very nice. -

AussieDixieland/Ragtime on Live 365. Sniffing around for trad jazz on the internets, this one seems to fit the bill quite nicely. It does have short commercials, which is fine. (Some of these 365 broadcasts don't seem to have any). Just tuned in, so don't know much about it -- self-described as Dixieland and Ragtime played by Aussie bands. -

Their final goodbye has been immortalized along Sarasota's otherwise picturesque bayfront: ... and thousands of tourists now have a photo buried in a drawer somewhere at home of themselves looking up Joe's dress. -
It's good to know that a positive vibe has displaced the decidedly negative one(s), Dan. I was talking to a guy in New Orleans, just chewing the fat at a coffee shop one morning when I was there about a month ago. We got on the topic of spirits and things lurking about in the French Quarter. The guy was a complete stranger, so I took everything he was saying in the 'spirit' of things, but at the same time didn't doubt his sincerity. He told me a story about a home in the Quarter that a woman he knew lived in. It was once owned back in the 1800s by a woman who went insane after her husband left her. She ended up killing herself and her small white dog in the home. The woman that this guy knows who lives there now also had her husband leave her. And she lived in the home alone with -- you guessed it -- a small white dog. He spent the night there once and kept waking up at the sound of doors opening and slamming shut. He said he asked the woman about it in the morning (they were just friends, he said, and he slept on a different floor from her bedroom). She hadn't heard anything, and pointed out to him one of the unique features of the home which he hadn't noticed until then. There were no doors anywhere on the inside of the house. None. Lots of stories like that in New Orleans, they say.

I've now seen 2 slams today, having caught the bizarre end to the Rays game this afternoon. Hope it works out better for Boston than it did in St. Pete. Sox need to get rolling for the Yankees series. Maddon was moaning about the need for a new stadium (he's right) after that pop fly in the ninth hit the catwalk at the Trop, allowing the Twins to score the eventual winning run. This, after the Rays had come back from the dead to tie it on Bartlett's granny in the eighth. If Benoit had simply stuck around on the mound and been ready to field his position, it probably would have been an out. I think Benoit just headed for the dugout as soon as it was hit. He was certainly nowhere in the picture when the ball fell to the ground about 10 feet behind the mound. That's what Maddon should be pissed about. The catwalk is what it is.

Radio Dismuke 1930s big band/swing/popular music of the day. Right now: Ten Freshmen -- "Look What You've Done To Me" -
Have a good one, and eat some cake!

Was at the Rays game tonight. Nice win. Was a little perplexed at how they couldn't seem to field a bunt though. Twins put down three in a row and the Rays finally got the first out of the inning on the third one. Didn't come back to bite them, but yeesh. Was sitting among some season ticket holders, one of whom characterized 1B Dan Johnson, called up to fill in for Pena, as a AAAA player -- great in triple A, can't hit major-league pitching. ... Jury's out. He didn't look real comfortable at the plate but did draw a couple of walks. Dan, I can't remember a team being so decimated by injuries. I hadn't heard about Youkilis. A-Rod missed the team portrait today.

Yes, that one freaked me out too. Loved Night Gallery. Hah! I remember that episode also. There was another one where a guy had a painting of the house he lived in hanging in a hallway inside the house. I forget the storyline, but he did something bad -- maybe buried someone in the yard -- and at the end of the episode the painting kept changing every time he looked at it. It showed a dark figure (the person he buried in the yard?) getting closer and closer to the house, coming after him. Kinda gives me chills just thinking about it.
