If you're not familiar with Raymond Burke, who never left New Orleans much, I think you're going to like his clarinet playing on the Hodes album. Arrived today and listening now. What a great album. Burke fits beautifully with the light, laid-back feeling of the small groups here. Really enjoying it. I have Burke's Crescent City Music, St. Louis Blues disc as well. Should play that for comparison sake later.

That's the one. I was off by a dozen years or so ... Good album. Will look into those, thanks. Prompted by this thread to fire up the Miles Davis In Europe disc earlier. Very nice. The man could certainly fly around the keypad with abandon -- or mathematical precision.

The kid Hellickson won his first major league start tonight, allowing three hits and two runs with six K's over 7 innings. Seemed pretty poised on the mound. He's headed back to the minors tonight but will likely find himself in the bullpen by Sept. Had a fastball around 92, nice change-up. Can't have too much pitching. I'm actually glad the Rays didn't make any big moves at the deadline giving up any of their young talent. Rays have also called up ("selected," actually, is the term they used. What's the distinction?) Dan Johnson, 1B, from Durham for a few games with Pena out. He's hitting .303 with 30 homers and 95 RBI at Durham. Don't know anything else about him, but those numbers are great, and the broadcast booth was giddy over his call-up/selection.

Count me among the fans of Coleman's playing with Miles Davis. Don't know much of the man's output beyond that, other than a Yoshi's live date from the '70s kicking around here somewhere, which is quite enjoyable. Sorry to hear that his playing may be suffering lately.

Just stumbled upon this thread. It's taken me well over an hour to read through it, but very enjoyable and informative. Great thread Bill. Thanks and keep 'em coming! :tup -
So Balfour was injured wrasslin' around with pitching coach Jim Hickey.

An interesting and well-filmed documentary. Some of his more conspiratorial views seem a bit far out. But hey, he lived it.

"The Ring" A 10 on the scary scale. The original Japanese version is the one to see, but if you don't dig subtitles, the American version is pretty creepy, too. The thing about "The Exorcist," and a lot of horror movies, is that after I've seen them once they become almost comical on subsequent viewings. Once I know what's coming, the films dissolve into sort of comedic self parody. EDIT: took out the image cause it might be a bit of a spoiler. ... -
Brownie could do this by editing his original post. Happy to oblige A much more pleasant title, especially given all the RIP threads that have been cropping up recently. Not that the passing of these wonderful artists shouldn't be noted. It should. But good news is always welcome.

I'll grant you that pitch #7 was a ball but, take a look at that graph again. Pitch #1 was fouled off for strike 1. Pitch #2 was a ball. Pitch #3 which was a called BALL was actually was STRIKE 2 according to that graph. Pitch #4 which Arod swung and missed for strike 2 should have been strike 3. So really Arod should have been out 3 pitches before the ump's 2nd bad call. I didn't get that chart. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. The called strike three was an inside pitch. That chart makes it look outside. It seemed too close to take though.

All about Shields today. Fastball, curve and that killer change-up. He was locked in. Maddon's saying now on the post-game it was the best game he's ever seen him pitch. Was a little nervous when they ran Qualls out there in a pressure situation, especially when he fell behind 3-0.

Case in point: Shoppach's RBI single that Tex most likely would have caught and that sent Berkman tumbling. He failed to pick up a throw on the short hop from Cano that cost them an out, too. Kind of a lazy throw by Cano (is there a reason he's not planting and throwing? He's done that twice now.) But Teixeira would likely have snagged it. Shields' change-up looks very good today. The Yankees are going fishing on that thing ... so far.

To kick off what will likely be a tough series against a red-hot Twins club (seven straight, 9-1 in last 10 -- against weaker clubs, but still.)

They need not worry. ... on second thought, they may have a point ...

What radio are you listening to right now?

Weenie Juke Radio Presently: Bukka White, "Shake 'em on Down" Weenie Juke has become a favorite late-night listen for me lately. -
Strange thread. I don't know who Chris Heim is, nor do I know who Margaret is. My "loss" I guess. "Margaret" is Margaret Ray, a disturbed woman who, in the late '80s, stalked Dave to the point of stealing his car and dropping by his home in the middle of the night. She later committed suicide by lying down in front of an approaching train. Very sad. O.K. Who's Chris Heim?? I'll take a wild stab at it:

My Jsngry database indicates he is correct. At least what music Letterman does have on his show is performed live and not lip-synced or some shit. The rare times I've watched his show in the last 10 - 15 years, the bands that he's had on have always seemed OK. Not jazz, but who cares?

That was a great game. Bombs away tonight. I think it was Swisher that Garza had gotten out twice with the curve ball. He went to the well a third time with two strikes and Swisher launches on him. Garza was just asking for trouble throwing that pitch in that situation. Not real imaginative. Pena tweaked his foot somehow. May be out tomorrow, not sure. Shields - Sabathia for the rubber match.
-
He had a real nice game today with a pair of hits, RBI, looked sharp at the plate, and made a nice catch against the wall in left. Looks like a player all right. Nice comeback today after falling just short last night.
-
He was great in the '80s though!

I missed that! An intercostal strain? Don't know anything about the intercostal muscles but a quick look around seems to indicate they have to do primarly with the chest and rib area, but also the front of the arm? I assume Balfour's injury is with the chest area. Damn.
