"....OR the man is secretly in love with Barroid and just can't bring himself to put him in prison." I guess if you leave out the most important part of his sentence there wouldn't be any other way to read that, Aggie. Context, in the whole, is important. I won't argue with you on that point. Cut and paste, is manipulation. Dan clarified? Please. This is a guy who honestly believes steroids make you hit HRs. Then hurls insults when he knows he's dead wrong. Be realistic, Aggie. You're arguing over semantics, and it is a meaningless argument now that Dan has spelled out specifically what he meant. Anabolic steroids help increase muscle mass. More muscle means more power. More power means longer fly balls. You must be the only person in America who does not acknowledge that steroids, HGH and other PEDs (which stands for 'performance-enhancing drugs,' which should give you a hint as to their purpose) don't increase an athlete's performance levels, shorten recovery times, enhance training methods, help someone who can already hit a baseball hit that baseball farther. What is the basis for this belief of yours? Do you have any widely accepted medical evidence that shows steroids don't affect the performance of an athlete? That they don't add muscle mass? Don't shorten recovery times?

one more promo of Really the Blues

Allen, is your mailbox full? Was unable to PM you. Got some kind of "not accepting PMs" error message. Anyways, I was just over at Blind Man's Blues looking for a thread on this box and didn't find one (through my own ineptness, surely). Any hints? -

It certainly beats the 2010 reunion tour with ... well, who's left? But he really needs to shave his head if he wants to be taken seriously. -

Yeah, it's an amazing set of music all right. And there's an almost endless trail of tasty leads to follow. Was listening to disc 6 earlier today -- the track "Starvation Blues," Jesse Stone, led me to a compilation of Kansas City music from the 1920s (available dirt cheap), which includes 'Starvation Blues' and another track by Jesse Stone (and His Blue Serenaders), along with a fistful of other KC bands of the period. -

I think this, along with the release of the Pirates' financial information -- and to an extent the Rays' financial information as well -- could be a story that resonates for a while. At least it should. The Pirates and Rays haven't engaged in the sort of shenanigans that the Marlins apparently may have. The Marlins could be in some legal jeopardy, I'd think, if they submitted false financial information on any legal documents related to the new stadium. But the Pirates have basically been happy to field a noncompetitive team in order to maximize profits while basically doing nothing. Pirates ownership came out the next day with some pathetic damage control that they owed MLB a bunch of dough (so?), and bought some new computers (oooohhhh), and some other supposed 'investments' in the farm system (which, ironically, they may actually be starting to invest a bit in the farm system, finally). The Rays financial information shows they are making less money by fielding a competitive team, so kind of the opposite situation to the Pirates. The late Buccaneers' owner Hugh Culverhouse made good money with that woeful team for many years in the NFL. But that's a different thing than lying about finances in order to get taxpayers to build you a new stadium. -- Although, I wouldn't be at all surprised if virtually every team that has gotten a new stadium in the past decade or so has lied about their financial situation. Still, these documents provide some concrete evidence.

This is plainly just wrong...

More and more these days, I'm less and less into red meat. Especially of the fast-food variety. Shit, of the any restaurant variety. When it comes right down to it, I don't really trust the food industry in general any more. .... pass the nuts .... -

Yeah, honey? Me again. Looks like late Friday at the earliest now ...

Yeah, honey? Hi. Listen, there's a bit of a backup on the old freeway tonight. Yeah ... Uh-huh ... Well, I probably won't be home until, lets see, next Thursday, it looks like.

From 'This Date In History' (for Wednesday) 1922 — In one of the wildest games ever played, the Cubs beat the Phillies 26-23. The Cubs led 25-6 in the fourth inning, but held on as the game ended with the Phillies leaving the bases loaded.

However anyone might have read that passage at first Dan, you subsequently clarified it, so I don't quite understand why anyone would make an issue out of it or be confused about it now. Back to the Bonds case, as I understand it, the judge is disallowing some (not all) of Bonds' test results because the trainer won't verify that they're his, preferring jail time over testifying. So, if prosecutors are able to somehow get Anderson to testify, will those test results be back in? I guess they would be, since that's the sole reason they're being disallowed.

Wasn't it nice of the braves to give you him for nothing??? Oh wait, we got Jesse Chavez At least we spun him off into Kyle Farnsworthless....9.45 ERA in the weak little girlyman NL. I know. He's been pretty much lights-out all year. Just nice to see someone come in and go after the strike zone aggressively. These middle relief guys who nibble around the edges and never get anything near the strike zone, bouncing pitches in front of the plate, over the catcher's head, loading the bases, it's frustrating as hell to watch these guys sometimes. THROW A DAMN STRIKE! Pitch to contact instead of trying to fool the batter all - the -- time - every - pitch. Geez. (feel better now) .

Soriano in the ninth last night: 9 pitches, 9 strikes. That was a thing of beauty.

Hah! Catchy all right.

I think PMI is only required at the time of purchase, if you're putting less than 20% down. If the value of your home drops to where you no longer have that 20% equity in it, I don't think the bank suddenly requires you to buy PMI. ... Sure hope not, anyways.

No, no. I'm just trying to find my way through your reasoning, that's all. You don't have to oblige, but if you just throw around conspiracy theories, that's exactly what it's going to sound like. For example (and this is pretty straight forward), your 'poisoning the Bonds jury' argument depends on Clemens being tried and convicted before Bonds. Otherwise, it makes no sense at all. And this doesn't even address whether there is any basis for believing that to begin with.
-
What I am so obviously saying is the Feds called for a delay in the Bonds trial then indicted Clemens. I see. I wouldn't have edited out the essence of your argument had I realized that, "An indictment just before Bonds kangaroo trial. ..." obviously meant "the Feds called for a delay in the Bonds trial. ...." I honestly would never have guessed that's what you obviously meant. But regardless, whatever you imagine their motivations to be, an indictment of one person does not "prove" anything, let alone the merits of a separate case. So the feds want to convict Clemens first, in order to prime the Bonds jury? (Don't want to misread you. By "outcome" you do mean 'verdict,' yes?) But is Clemens going to trial before Bonds? I honestly don't know the answer, but I don't believe a trial date has been set for Clemens yet, has it? The assumption built into your statement above (that a Clemens conviction would influence a Bonds jury, if that's what you're trying to say) would seem to depend on Clemens being tried (and convicted) first. I'm not Danny. I guess we need to start with the basics. And Clemens appears to be just another asshole who thinks the rules don't apply. Hope that helps.
-
You're starting to not make sense. "The indictment ... proves nothing except the government has no case." How do you get from point A to point B on that one? And dismissing the validity of the trials before they've even begun seems like the classic denial behavior. You're setting up the escape hatch as if expecting that they will be found guilty. What if they're found not guilty? Will you view the legal process that vindicated them as invalid? I'd think these two athletes would welcome their day in court as a chance to clear their names. In fact, Clemens has said just that. I'm sure Bonds has, too. As for taking back Clemens' WS wins because he's now tarnished with the same PED brush as Bonds, I don't think anyone is suggesting that the Giants forfeit any or all of their wins -- WS or otherwise -- in which Barry Bonds participated. It's a team sport. Asterisks next to individual accomplishments, that's another story.

I'm sure you know of her already, and I'm sure Larry must, but Matana Roberts' "Chicago Project" (with Fred Anderson sitting in on three tracks) is a disc I've always enjoyed, as are her "Sticks and Stones" discs. Connected with the AACM, her recorded output's a little thin. Seems like she's kicking around out West lately and immersed in 'Coin Coin,' a multimedia project focused on the South during slavery. I've heard/seen nothing of that. Her blog.

Welcome back. Sounds like you had a great time. ... Who's Wallace?
-
Yes, you're right of course. Farther east. :blush2: I knew there had to be an obvious reason. That's one of those geographic anomalies that don't seem right. It's like finding out that Reno, Nevada is further west than Los Angeles. Or that Windsor, Ontario is directly south of Detroit. (Trivial Pursuit)

Was thinking of a related thing earlier: I rarely play music loudly at all anymore. I prefer a level for listening through speakers at about the level where you could comfortably hold a conversation simultaneously. Maybe a tad louder, but not much. Wasn't always that way. Used to love to blast the music. But now, once it gets above a comfortable conversation level, the louder it is the less I hear of what's going on. Also, speaking of loud noises, I burnt some toast a few weeks ago and the security system smoke alarm went off inside the house. MAN! I'm telling you, that thing about blew my head off. Jet-engine, can't-think-straight loud. Couldn't figure out how to turn the damn thing off for a few minutes and had a pretty good headache going by the time I did. Kind of reminds me of the time I was foraging around for laundry detergent and accidentally took a whiff of my college roommate's container full of chlorine powder he used for cleaning pools. Lost about 8 zillion brain cells in one shot on that one. But that's another story.
