  1. Yeah, clearly not the appropriate reviewer for this music.
  2. Detroit has been playing their asses off, even at 0-2, they still impress me more than the Cowboys or Vikings. That opening group of teams that are 2-0, they play together, they LOOK like football teams. The 'Boys are a collection of overpaid star power with no focus. You're right, which makes next Sunday real interesting for the Vikes. If they lose that one to the Lions and find themselves sitting at 0-3 with a bye week the following week ... yeesh. I think a whole lot of folks would love to see the Jerryworld Cowboys go down. The Texans, otoh, look like they'll be a fun team to watch, and could make some real noise in that division. But seems that the Colts showed that they're not quite ready to fade away just yet.
  3. Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Da Bears, Packers, Dolphins, Texans and Steelers (with their 4th-string QB) are all 2-0. Vikings and Cowboys are there with the likes of Cleveland and Detroit at 0-2, with the 49ers in real danger of joining that group tonight.
  4. I guess Favre said something after the game to the effect that, 'we're not meshing as quickly as last year's squad.' Naturally, the reaction to that sort of comment is: Maybe training camp would have helped? Without Rice, the receiving corps is not what it was. They get the Lions next Sunday. If they drop that game, the Viking ship will officially have run aground.
  5. I missed this - did he outplay Jason Campbell in the preseason, or did Campbell get hurt or something? They pulled Campbell at the half and Gradkowski rallied them to a win.
  6. From what I saw in the highlights, the Dallas secondary is not very good at all. Eagles should stay with Vick for now. Seems like a no-brainer. Sanchez really impressed today for the Jets. Nice to see Gradkowski do well for Oakland. Favre: three picks and a fumble. That was the only game I really saw much of today. Miami was more physical on both sides of the ball. Surprising.
  7. Nice story Allen. Glad that you solved the mystery. Equally interesting that you were playing with Bynum. Now that I'd like to listen to.
  8. Concise writing does not equal bad writing. Quite the opposite. We all have heard Mark Twain's quote: "I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” This may be an unpopular notion, but some of the best straight news writing around used to be in USA Today. Not the reporting, necessarily. The writing. And that may not be a bad place, Red, to get a feel for what you're being asked to do.
  9. Thanks for linking that.
  10. Man, three great games. I'm sure New York will be wild next week. On the HBP thing: Maddon said after the game he didn't have a problem with Jeter selling it. What he said he did have a problem with is that none of the umpires could tell him they saw the ball hit Jeter, and all of them told him they knew it hit the bat, but they wouldn't reverse the call. In the end, I guess Jeter just made the umps look bad. It's fun to watch two teams that are so different in many ways compete so closely one game after another.
  11. Yeah, another frenzied finish. And Granderson's catch in CF. Wow! Garza got knocked around pretty good for the second straight game. Shields hasn't exactly been lights out lately either, I don't think. It's funny when you look at these series and size up the pitching match-ups you figure, CC's probably going to win the opener, Garza will give the Rays a good chance going against Nova. ... Doesn't always quite work out.
  12. Hey! Get away from the punch bowl.
  13. Happy birthday Dan. Enjoy.
  14. Pitching match-up was a gem. To get a win when CC starts is huge. The schedule-makers sure got it right this year.
  15. Looks like a wonderful time. Congrats!
  16. That's great! NYT has "All the News That's Fit to Print" And now ... Organissimo Jim wins!!!
  17. What happened was, the base runner coming from second was standing on the third when the player who was caught in the rundown between 3rd and home slid back into third without being tagged. Two players now on the same bag. The guy who had slide into third from the rundown was then tagged while holding the bag, and the third base umpire signaled an out. After signaling the out, the umpire pointed to the base runner who had come from second base, indicating he was the one who was out, not the guy who slid back into third from the rundown. Meanwhile, the player caught in the rundown started trotting away immediately after the ump signaled an out, figuring he was the out. Then he suddenly realized he was still in play, and so he got caught in a second rundown, and this time he was tagged out. Two outs. Weird play. I had always assumed whoever got to the bag first was the one who owned it. But not judging from that play. I didn't actually hear the explanation, so maybe my eyes deceived me, but I don't think so.
  18. Re: Rays-Sox rundown play: So, the bag belongs to the guy caught in the rundown between third and home, and the trailing runner is out if the guy in the rundown gets back to third while the trailing runner is also standing on it? (I have the sound off, listening to music, so didn't hear the explanation.)
  19. Take heart. The poll is running at 85% preference for CDs (... as of this post. But CNN is now projecting CDs will win the vote in a landslide). I think there's only been one person so far who has said they listen to 100% mp3.
  20. Should an umpire be able to throw a fan out of the game for heckling? Once heard of a minor league game where the ump threw out the organ player for playing "Three Blind Mice." EDIT: apparently the guy was cited for disorderly conduct as well. For heckling at a ballgame? Did he do anything else? If not, this is ridiculous, IMO.
  21. CD. I actually find it more convenient.

    Help?

S'OK. Wish I had some better advice, but sadly .... If it were me, I'd assume there was an overload or short somewhere, in which case I would probably leave it off.

    Help?

    Leave the house immediately.
  24. I was sniffing around for the Mississippi John Hurt 1928 recordings, sampling three different releases: the one below (which I ended up settling on), the Yazoo release and a Document compilation titled "Never Let the Same Bee Sting You Twice," a three-disc set that includes the Hurt recordings. The main issue in deciding among the three was their use (or over use) of noise reduction software. The Yazoo used none, or very little, leaving all the pops and crackles. The one I settled on seemed to apply noise reduction quite aggressively, but to my ear that did not diminish the brightness of the guitar and vocals enough to make me choose the pops and crackles. But from the samples I listened to, the Document release was the most aggressive in their use of noise reduction, or at least it was used aggressively on the source material they chose. It sounded muffled in comparison to both of the others. I was a little surprised by this. Perhaps trying to judge this by sound samples alone is unwise, but even so, the difference was significant.
