  1. My Fair Lady - Shelly Manne and His Friends (Contemporary - DCC Gold) Bashin' - Jimmy Smith (Verve - DCC Gold) The Dynamic Duo - Jimmy Smith & Wes Montgomery (Verve - VME) House Party - Jimmy Smith (Blue Note - Toshiba-EMI RVG) The Sermon - Jimmy Smtih (Blue Note - Toshiba-EMI RVG) Tour De Force - The Trumpets of Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie and Harry Edison (Verve - PolyGram Japan)
  2. For those of you who may have missed the first time, Rodney Jones filed several reports for All About Jazz while preparing "Soul Manifesto." No sensational news or extraordinary insight ... but a comprehensive, told-as-they-happen account of making a record. Making of A Jazz CD by Rodney Jones
  3. There are three DSW quartet CDs with Ibarra and you gotta get 'em all. Godspellized on DIW Wisdom of Uncertainty on AUM Fidelity Go See the World on Columbia
  4. There have been two Elmo Hope JRVGs. The trio disc had 8 tracks, missing 2 tracks ("It's A Lovely Day Today" and an alternate take of "Mo Is On") from the session with Heath and Philly Joe. The quintet disc had 6 tracks, missing only an alternate take ("Crazy") from the session with Frank Foster, Freeman Lee, Heath, and Blakey. The domestic had 20 tracks, 17 tracks from the two sessions mentioned above plus 3 tracks from a Pacific Jazz session from 1957 with Land, Stu Williamson, Vinnegar, and Butler. The OOP domestic was available from Tower for quite a while but now I see it's no longer there.
  5. This is by Andrew's (what appears to be the) regular quartet at the time. The same lineup appears on the East Wind title (Blue Black) that recently appeared on CD. Vass has the light, dry tone on alto and flute. White and Williams may not be that well known, but they are more than competent to handle the complexities Andew set in his compositions. Both Divine Revelation and Blue Black sound like the extension from Hill's Blue Notes (Smoke Stack and Judgment). There are some meandering/confusing moments, but the records deliver several inspired stretches of music that leave the listener (this one, at least) satisfied in the end.
  6. Lush Life was released in February, 1992. Henderson's "return" had little to do with Clinton.
  7. The further info on the session is at Ed Michel's site. According to Michel, the session was recorded for Galaxy but a contractual "misunderstanding" led to a part of the session being issued on Muse.
  8. Some tracks on the Muse was compiled on a 32Jazz release, Forest Flowers. It doesn't appear the Galaxy session has appeared on CD.
  9. Another possibility is that you're getting these pop-ups through a messenger service. I use Microsoft's MSN Messenger and I had to set the privacy preference to block unwanted messages from poping up.
  10. It could be one of the free media players you use. RealPlayer pops some messages up unless you set your preference. I heard KaZaa does the similar thing.
  11. Did you set the Opera's preference so that the browser would only open the pop-up windows you request?
  12. Hmmm.... Isn't b3-er from "back East"? It's all adding up now. Start a big flack, more people looking at the site.... I guess living in East Lansing qualifies as being somewhere "back East."
  13. [i don't care] and [it's up to B-3er] seem identical to me. I'm 80% sure I know who this person is ... He might've thought it was a harmless joke, but obviously many didn''t agree.
  14. They have some Palo Alto sessions from the early 80s that were reissued by Quicksilver. Thus far, I downloaded McCoy Tyner's Just Feelin' and David Friesen's Amber Skies (with Henderson, Corea and Motian). Emusic also has some Vee Jay sessions released on Koch Jazz, such as Expoobident (what does this word mean, anyway?), Fantastic Frank Strozier, & Wayning Moment. Search for GNP/Crescendo and Xanadu releases as well, although they need to re-do the Xanadus. Most files are compressed using the variable bit rates method (probably at around 200kbps).
  15. Are we talking about the show starring Bronson Pinchot as Balki Bartokomus?
  16. The "conflict of interest" was evident in publishing the "white men in charge" column itself, according to JT. They say Crouch wanted to say directly that the "establishment" put a man like Douglas above Marsalis because of racial agenda and professional jealousy, among other reasons. The editor was eventually able to persuade Crouch into removing the Marsalis references from the column. I don't think praising Eric Reed in his next and final column had anything to do with the dismissal of Crouch.
  17. I agree with this assessment but to surprisingly many folks a few tracks sounding horrible is often enough to ruin the whole experience.
  18. Ellington and Coltrane is a good suggestion. Evans and Bennett will work, too. Also, I can recommend: Something Else - Cannonball Adderley Focus - Stan Getz Wave - Antonio Carlos Jobim Alone (Again) - Bill Evans Chez Toots - Toots Thielemans Live in Paris - Diana Krall
  19. I voted him to be in my Top 5 but my Top 5 list has about 25 artists in it. To me Andrew means a constant, determined search for harmonic possibilities ... not just on piano, but on all instruments he chooses to employ.
  20. I got this one today and there was no insert.
  21. Got this from A.U.M. Fidelity just now. I envy those of you in New York.
