  3. I got this at a used shop for $75 less than a year ago. Wow, if this is what I may possibly get, I gotta think about offering it up for sale.

  5. Hmmm ... I see this one indeed is out of print. I'm sure this is a temporary leave before it reappears as part of the OJC series.
  6. Got my order a few days ago, too. Thanks, Chuck.

  8. I'm surprised this thread has lasted this long ... oh boy.
  9. Mr. Burke, you sure are a veteran groover ... Dr. Dre? DJ Premier? What year is this anyway? I don't think The Black Album's that bad ... I think it's an improvement over the overly-long and boring Blueprint2 and the largely-pointless version 2.1. It's the rhyme that counts with Be's man, anyway. I keep hearing The Brown Album's a keeper ... Have you heard it?
  10. Downloaded the album last night and played it a couple of times thus far ... I realize many of you will have no idea what I'm talkin' about ... but anyway ... Since hip-hop has been sampling from all sources, the White Album is not really a surprise choice ... However, some of the tracks are so cleverly matched one cannot help but smile at the ingenuity. "Encore," "Dirt Off Your Shoulder," and "Moment of Clarity" are very well done. Even "What More Can I Say?," not one of HOVA's best, gets a facelift from "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." On the other hand, some are quite predictable. "99 Problems" and "Helter Skelter" are such a natural match that it's surprising the result disappoints. "Change Clothes," itself a second-rate rewrite of the Neptunes' "Frontin'," doesn't improve much even with the aid from the Fab 4. Even though backing tracks are taken from the Beatles ... looping and speed correction take away much charm from the originals. If you're more into the Beatles, you'll likely to be disappointed. If you're a fan of the God MC, this is an interesting effort worth seeking.
  11. I have the 4-tracks EP they put out and kinda like it ... But I have passed on buying the album based on lukewarm reviews from my buddies ... I liked the catchy single the minute I heard it on the radio, but the vocal lacks something ... I cannot quite put a finger on what it is but it's something Iggy definitely shows he has on "Lust for Life."
  12. Kenton's Holman and Russo charts ... Found it at a used store here in E. Lansing ... Been quite a while since I bought one from Mosaic ... Mosaic/Blue Note has been on my s***list for the past year.
  13. Basie Live in 1998 was the first purchase ... A huge number of prev. unreleased tracks made it a no-brainer.
  14. The first 12 tracks listed in the CDU page linked are on DVD of Liberation Music Orchestra at Montreal Jazz Festival in 1992. The final 4 are the CD tracks. This is an import version of the limited edition CD/DVD 2-fer released in Korea last month. Buyer beware ... for the DVD could be region-3 coded and not playable on US players. This DVD is separately available in the US as: Charlie Haden - Liberation Music Orchestra
  15. The problem with parting with older issues is oftentimes you cannot determine clearly which sounds better. They just sound different with each having its idiosyncratic merits and faults. Of course, in the end, you don't want to keep duplicates and end up selling (or giving away) one ... but funny how you keep missing certain nuances from the one you got rid of after that.
  16. 323.4 ... .1 shy of the group record, I see.
  17. Are these the imports of European digipaks or did Rhino do the repackaging and put them in jewel cases? [i'm talking about the recent batch of remasters released on the 3rd: Apogee, You Must Believe in Spring, The Greatest Garner, Ornette! etc.] Not that I care ... I just put my order in at CDUniverse and will be happy to have them in any shape. However, this reissue business is killing me, I must say. This time around 4 of the 7 CDs (the Bill Evans and the 3 Ellington Columbias) I ordered were for the bonus tracks only. Not even 10 years into the life as a serious jazz listener/collector, already this is happening all too often. I can only imagine how it is like for those of you who have been at this for far longer than I have. -_-
  18. I'm terribly sorry to hear this, Tom. I wish you and your family can rise above the sorrow you'll undoubtedly carry for quite a while and gain strength from it eventually.
  19. The lineup may change by the time they get to Arizona. I think I heard Ken Peplowski and Terence Blanchard will be part of the all-stars.
  20. You don't know me, Jim. I'm not a local, just here for a degree.
  21. I was hoping to attend but couldn't persuade my date to go on Friday. Should probably dump her, donchathink? Then again, I did drag a girl to see Brad Mehldau a few years ago when he came to town and she was nodding off the whole time. I sure know how to pick 'em, eh?
  22. Jim, did the reverb in the CD version Columbia France put out? I don't remember there being one (but I'm an ocean away from my copy at this time). I got the reissue for the bonus tracks and I agree the sound quality has been improved. Then again I've never been one to be bothered by poor sound ... The Sonny Rollins live recordings from the late 50s and the late 60s (just before the respective retirement periods) are usually horrible to listen to (especially the Denmark ones from '67) but they are some of the small number of discs (and tapes, the Jim kindly sent to me ) that get played repeatedly and often. Sorry, I got off track a bit. This band seems to be dismissed by the critics rather swiftly, oftentimes lumped with Corea's own endeavors with RTF or with Stan's own dive into the popdom a few years later. I think they should just say the band sounds good and forget about whatever agenda they have. np. The Smiths "Singles" ... What sweet tunes ... and such pathetic stories ... Wonder what Duke would have come up with if given these tales to work with in a commission
