  1. Fish oil when I remember. Sometimes selenium plus ACE. As I seem to forget to take them more often than not I guess they don't do very much for me.
  2. Manhattan Jazz Septette.
  3. Thanks for the recommendations Dan. It's a while since the Three Sounds graced my turnatable so I'll give those a spin.
  4. An interesting live pairing back in 2002 was Indian alto sax player Kadri Gopalnath with Evan Parker.

    Alec Wilder

A quick look at the discography shows Wilder as arranger on many Mildred Bailley recordings. However I recall reading years ago about his octet which recorded several sides in the late 40s(?). I've only heard one number by this group and I'm sure the was some "jazzy" content.
  6. Still good value.
  7. It was suggested to me a while ago that the various issues of the Freedom Suite would make for a decent discussion. So I thought we could give it a try. Sonny Rollins, David S Ware (two versions) and Branford Marsalis. Likes, dislikes, preferences, comments in general. Post them here.
  8. Not a lot to add here, it's a beautiful album. I've spun it several times in the past two weeks and there's always something new little detail to to hear. Love the voicings on Moon Dreams. Liked John Lewis too! I'll be starting on the live recordings later.
  9. Thanks for the update John

    Martin Speake

I saw Speake a while ago with Motian and Bobo Stenson. It was musical but all a little bloodless and introverted. He's touring now with Charlie Parker Tribute project that sounds interesting.
  11. No other comments on the Standards Trio????
  12. I'd guess Kind of Blue and Mingus Ah Um.
  13. Thanks Ronald and ejp, sounds like one for me.

    Davis S Ware Quartets

None other than that I've heard it. I like Ware well enough to have not gotten rid of the CDs I have that he's on, but not so well as to be able to tell you want they are or waht, if anything, really stands out. Very enjoyable. Not too far out.
  15. Just had an email saying this cd iis available again. I generally enjoy Gonzalez so it looks like one I should have. Any views? I'm not familiar with Mateen's playing.
  16. Is this Antwerp 28 Oct 1967? Came out on a Jazzman cd.

    Davis S Ware Quartets

I saw David in London in the seventies with Andrew Cyrille's quintet. He was a little more conventional then but extremely impressive. He made a big impression on me at the time, the closing blues showed that he could walk the bar with the best of them. I've tried to keep up with his playing but so I can't say I've found any of his recordings completly satisfying. I did however like the way he included a popular song in his earlier recordings. These pieces were thoroughly deconstructed but remained true the melodies, these I think provided a helpful way in to his work.

    Davis S Ware Quartets

Ware is a very impressive player with a wonderful tone. His big inspiration is Sonny Rollins but the link is not so obvious now. But like relyles I don't fully engage with his work But I've been listening to the new set and I'd say it's a good place to start. especially as it is tremendous value for money.
  19. And I was just thinking I'll definitely have that beer with you when I next to Phoenix.
  20. Andrew Hill; One For One (the Hubbard/Henderson sides). One of those weird auto couples doubles.
  21. My thanks too Mike.
  22. What about four valve instruments? The cover of Ted Curson's "Plenty Of Horn" shows him playing what I take to be a pocket trumpet with four valves. I can also remember Freddie Hubbard playing at Ronnie Scotts with an instrument with keys at the side (again I think this was a four valve instrument.)
  23. Andrew Hill; Compulsion (UA pressing)
  24. I agree with the King here, the Rudd/Lacy is the better and more important recording. The great thing about the Shepp disc is that the guys are playing together again and that they are playing so well. I saw the original band several times during their stint at Ronnie Scott's, electrifying stuff from the off. Garrison was especially effective with his long opening flamenco style intros. Later, when they played on the same bill as Miles they were roundly booed, they were some minor scuffles and many walked out! Did I read that a Shepp/Rudd Quartet is palying in Europe this summer? One to see.
  25. Maybe not quite so good as the old group but some of the magic is still there. Nevertheless still a fine recording.
