  1. Garth, mine has the check marks too, I think I got to about 197.

    Ahmad Jamal

I'm not up on recent Jamal. The last record I heard (quite a while ago) was very disappointing. Nothing particularly original, he didn't display the eloquent minmalism of his early trio recordings which for me made his playing so attractive. I played "Cross Country Tour" a day or so ago, that's the Jamal for me.
  3. The 1975 paperback was a forerunner of the much larger 2000 edition. It's difficult to argue with any of the authors choices in spite of or because of the more limited time range.

Are you talking about "NY1"? If so, I completely agree with you. I am.
  5. Great to see this out. Especially as the Fresh Sound lp sounded so horrible. Hopefully they have made a better job of it this time. Featured in Modern Jazz - The Essential Records. A slim 1975 publication and still one of the best critical books I know.
  6. I can feel the excitement here. Great news.
  7. Happy birthday and many happy returns
  8. Yes, I don't believe you'll find anything new. Just my opinion.
  9. I've got to agree with Rooster Ties. I love this band. Seems to add a lot of meaning to the Miles material they cover. And it's good to hear Leo Smith stretch out even if he's plugged in. Amazon have just shipped Upriver today so I'll be waiting for the postman tomorrow.

The Blue Note cd is amazing. Don't miss it. It's one of the great trio recordings imo.
  11. I didn't know I had this!!! Patterson's name doesn't normally come to he mind first when I think about organists (Big John Patton and JOS usually come first) and the varitone would normally be a big turn off for me. However Stitt sounds good to me here, varitone or not. The big plus is Green, his guitar really sings. Patterson is tasteful and doesn't overplay but his feature "Starry Night" is somewhat overblown. I'm gonna have to check out some more of this.
  12. I don't have this book nor have I read it. But I have read Derek Ansell's essays and reviews in Jazz Journal were he mainly writes on hard bop issues. I find his writing rather lightweight and it rarely adds anything to what is already known. My guess is that this will be an easy and rather superficial read concentrating on recordings. I doubt that it will cover anything not covered more than adequately elsewhere.

    Brubeck

None of the above really. I like the quartet particularly for the group sound, I'm especially fond of the Fantasy and earlier Columbias. Desmond always enthralls. Junior College was one of my very first lp buys and the only record I ever broke! The Brubeck Quartet was the first American group I saw live, London 1958. Can remember it still.
  14. This was down for AOTW but it looks like it's been deleted. Sorry etherbored I hope you don't mind me resurrecting it. It's worth an airing. I'm one of those who always enjoys the standards trio. I like Jarrett's way with standards, the melodies are treated with the right amount of respect and the chosen tempos always seem perfect. His long lines can be almost breathtaking. Dejohnette is especially impressive on this set catching the ear all the time. For some reason I never found the previous quartets any where near as interesting.
  15. That unfortunately happened pretty often with the Atlantic albums. Many of their masterings were not up to par with what was being produced at other labels (BN, Prestige, Contemporary among the non-majors)! My vinyl reissue sounded pretty awful. But the Collectables cd isn't that bright either. Presumably it's down to the source tape.
  16. I'll admit to finding this Miles band pretty difficult back when the music first came out. Although it builds on the freedoms of the Lincoln Centre concert I found this one seriously new and mysterious. Took me a long time to get into it and appreciate the band's approach. Even now I find some of the mystery is still there but I guess therein lies the magic. Herbie lays out a lot, could almost be a pianoless group.
  17. My King vinyl is pretty neat. I'll stick with that.
  18. Thanks Bentsy, Particularly interested in the Murray comments.
  19. Good idea Ron but I'm in the UK so phone is not such a good idea. I did think about returning it to Amazon but Howard Alden was kind enough to to put a nice message in the booklet for me. I can probably live with the defect.
  20. Sorry, I've just played the disc again. My memory is faulty, it is a scratchy noise not a knock as I mentioned earlier. I'm sure this wasn't on the equivalent Verve cd. I was going to contact Verve in the UK but they are hard to find so I gave up. There is no contact address for Verve on the box. The best bet would be for Verve to acknowledge there is a problem and replace the defective discs.
  21. Do you have a repeating knock for the first few seconds of track one?
  22. Sad news.
  23. Pretty neat!
  24. What about George Wallington. He doesn't seem to get much of a mention these days. More up tp date - Peter Madsen is definitely a talent worthy of greater recognition.
