  2. Have a great day John
  3. That's a good fish. In the UK we put them back.
  4. Last evening, Portsmouth Jazz Society's concert by the Scott Hamilton Quartet. Not cutting edge or particularly exciting to my ears but some immaculate playing from Scott.
  5. Many happy returns.
  6. Found some of these as cut outs many yers ago. Still have one by Henry Franklin (The Skipper At Home), two by Carn and one by The Awakening. Interesting period pieces. Would have liked a copy of "Coral Keys" but have made do with taped copy. Got a good price on ebay for Calvin Keys "Proceed With Caution".
  7. Just played Tubby Hayes; Return Visit (borrowed copy). Didn't keep when it first came out, not sure that my opnion's changed that much in the intervening years. Still it's always interesting to hear a comparitive rarity.
  8. I agree, good to have you here.
  9. Happy birthday sir, and many happy returns

    Art Farmer

I've always liked "Live At The Half Note".
  11. Warne Marsh; All Music Dennis Gonzalez NY Quartet; NY Midnight Suite World Saxophone Quartet: Experience Buddy DeFranco/Sonny Clark; Complete Sessions It's not been the best of years and I've not bought that much (relatively). Why these, All Music is one of the great jazz albums and here it is in expanded form in super sound. Gonzalez is a favourite, just good to have another first rate album from him. The WSQ is special because a number of tracks the quartet (I don't always find them easy to take) is augmented by rhythm playes and guests, so more to enjoy. I never had the DeFranco/Clarke Verves so I was delighted to see this reissue even if its origins atre dubious. Again it's just fine music, elegant and swinging hard. Can't think of a fifth one just yet.

  13. Nice work Mark.

    Teddy Charles

I'm very fond of Teddy Charles. Most of the above albums are pretty much essential. Does anyone know Something, New Somthing Blue on Columbia? This fits into this arena. My Fresh Sounds vinyl is so poorly equalised (I think) as to not too far short of unlistenable.
  15. Jazz by Gee is definitely not a classic. Side one sounds very casual, like the guys just met that day. Side two is better, sounding a lot more polished. Everything swings along nicely though and it's difficult not to like anything with these players on board. Gee's playing is fine, very dynamic, moving his horn on and off mic. Though as Mikeweil has noted above he's not a Benny Green. Still, it's one to keep. I think I have Soul Groove. I'll add that to the to play pile but mine's a UK reissue titled "The Swingers Get The Blues Too". Hopefully it's the same thing.
  16. I know I shouldn't wish my life away but the Hill set can't come soon enough for me. The issued tracks were on One For One, A BN Reissue series double.

    Ron Carter

I'd go for "All Blues" too. Nice Joe Henderson for good measure.
  18. I have the set too and like it a lot. It's exactly what you expect from Stitt, some fine blues playing and a bunch of good standards. If I have a complaint it's minor, towards the middle of the set some of the numbers are a little on the short side.

    Too scary to issue?

    Call Cobbs Jr.

Cobbs discography also includes sides with Jack McVea, Jimmy Mundy and Johnny Hodges.
  22. Fresh Sound transfers are frequently poor. Mine's on Jazz Door. I don't recall it being too bad. Presumably these come from the same source.
  23. Happy Birthday Deus.

    Matthew Gee

He crops up with Lou Donaldson on Blue Note. He seems to mainly a big band player, Erskine Hawkins in particular as well as the Duke. There's a small group with Joe Newman on Vanguard. Lord lists some 64 sessions.
