  1. I was a teenager when this first appeared. I was already a Rollins fan but with this cover Way Out West was absolutely irrestistable. The music is top notch - just a shade below the best of his Prestige output - and it gets a regular play. I've moved from early UK vinyl which I pretty much wore out, through the Japanese alternate takes lp (with the great alterate cover art) to the cd issue for the convenience of having all the music togther. Hard to select a favourite track as they all work well, Sonny sounding at home with the the easy swing of Brown and Manne. Nice clear sound too.
  2. Happy birthday Adrian and many happy returns. Have great day.
  3. Me too.

    An all time great.
  5. Nice one.
  6. Playing Dial S For Sonny today I noticed that the date on session photographs and the recording date on the insert and booklet are different. The Blue Note discography shows that the recording date given is that for Clifford Jordan's Cliff Craft. As both these Conns came out at the same time did the Jordan cd have the Sonny Clark recording date in its notes? Correct recording date 21 July 1957 shown as 10 Nov 1957 (the date for Cliff Craft). Apologies if this has come up before.
  7. Art Farmers been on my cd/turntable a lot recently but somehow I'd manged to overlook his Prestige recordings. This is a one is good place to start. A really enjoyable set, a good set of tunes, nice arrangements. The Love Supreme connection hadn't struck me before. Farmer seems pretty much his own man too at this stage in his career. I only have the OJC vinyl so I'm without the bonus track. Thanks to Fantasy for the very nice quality OJC pressings. I'll be digging out some more vintage Farmer over the next few days.
  8. Charlie Mariano Jerry Dodgion Sextet; Beauties Of 1918. (Pacific Jazz Japanese King pressing.
  9. Having paid full price for mine years ago this is a steal. Well worth having.
  10. By label for those labels I particularly collect, Blue Note, Prestige, Riverside, PJ, Contemporay, then alphabetically. Miles, Monk, Mulligan and Murray are filed individually. The remainder are a bit of a mess, 50's and 60s in the top half of the cupboard, more modern on the lower half. It helps to have a good memory. And then there's the pile on the floor.
  11. Scares me!

Me too, he's on my cd player now with the Cliff Jordan Sextet (BN 1565). Faultless.
  13. It's all the Prestige Coltrane music less the Miles Davis Quintets in chronological order. Comes with it's own booklet. Imo it's the best way to own the Prestige Tranes.

Thanks for the link Flurin, it's playing now. Very timely as Texier's Trio and Strada Sexet are playing in the UK in March. I was undecided about going.

  16. The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time by Mark Haddon
  17. Count me in as a Gullin fan but there is so much lovely stuff. Let me recommend Nils Lindberg's cd on Dragon "Sax Appeal and Trisection".
  18. Kenny Werner doesn't seem to have had a mention on this board. All his trio recordings are worth checking out.
  19. Marion Brown; Juba-Lee
  20. Yes, definitely
  21. I'm delighted. Another nice and similar album is Live in Berlin on West Wind.
  22. These are recordings from Swedish Radio. The same source as their Monk and Miles issues.
  23. I'm with you on this one Laton. While we are at it we could also do with the Mulligan Quartets on Verve.
  24. I don't know Joe Mooney but the best jazz accordian I've come across is Tony Argo's Jazz Argosy on Savoy. All star band including Pepper Adams and Hal McKusick, arrangements by Joe Cinderella.
