  1. I'm old enough to remember the fierce arguments that surrounded Ornette's early records and performances. I'll admit I was put off by all the comments and it was a while before I decided to take the plunge and find out what all the fuss was about. This was the album I bought. I can't say that I was too impressed at the time, maybe it was the odd frantic moment, Cherry's scrabbling trumpet or the dirge like slow piece. but as the avant garde got established I went back to Ornette. Since then I've grown to love his music. If you asked me yesterday I'd probably have said that this was my least favourite Ornette album (those first impressions?) but now I'd say the opposite. It's a fine album with spendid playing, it's difficult to pick a favourite track but Poise, Humpty Dumpty and Blues Connotation all contain some lovely jaunty, happy playing. Great stuff all round. I'll own up though and say that I still don't find Ornette that easy. Every time I play something from this period it takes me a track or two to tune in to what's going on.
  2. Welcome. AOTW - I'll look forward to you volunteering! PM me when ready.
  3. Lord says Ray Starling(p) Salvador (g) John Beal (bass) and Lennie McBrowne (d) Recorded NYC(?) c.1963
  4. Dropped my Dave Brubeck "Junior College" lp coming in the door. It slid out the jacket, hit the door step edge on and ended up with a half moon chunk out of it. More recently ruined a copy of Mobley's "Straigt No Filter" when a bit of grit(?) got on the cleaning pad.
  5. I was lukewarm about these too. Since getting the Black Lion remasters I've changed my mind. Not that the sound was poor in the first place, I'd just not listened.
  6. Didn't get last years as I didn't have broadband. But have now got both. Thanks Jim, twice over. Lovely stuff. Perfect for the season and will make a change from Jimmy Smith.
  7. RAY ANDERSON
  8. It's got to be Mulligan, but Melle, Chaloff and Brignola all do it for me.
  9. As leader Interplay We Will Meet Again
  10. Couw, Mine's a 1990 King album. I don't recall anything wrong with it but I'll give it a spin and let you know. Thanks. It is most notable on the vibe solos. Here is a 10 second snippet from somewhere towards the end of Eddie's solo on Another You (300Kb 192kpbs mp3; right-click-save or copy-paste the URL in the address bar). It sounds like a digital swoosh you get on lo-fi mp3s. Does anyone have the same Savoy/Denon CD? Gave a close listen to that Eddie Costa 'There'll Never Be Another You' solo on the 1990 King/Savoy reissue LP I have. I could not detect any flutter. Sound came distortion free! Only vibrations from the vibraphone, the way it should be. Long live vinyl Despite Brownie beating me to the turntable I gave this one a spin. A very enjoyable 40 minutes. And another great King pressing.
  11. No but, the jacket of the Archie Shepp/Bill Dixon Quartet says that the album was co produced by Shepp and Dixon.
  12. Too bad that all vinyl doesn't sound like this.
  13. Still no sign of the Jazztet on amazon.uk
  14. They're all excellent. I'd choose the one with the least familiar music. In my case it was the Amy. But I wouldn't be without any of them.
  15. What's wrong with BOOM-JACKIE-BOOM-CHICK Swings more?
  16. Yes, 2 lp set Live in Tokyo on Sony(J).
  17. Couw, Mine's a 1990 King album. I don't recall anything wrong with it but I'll give it a spin and let you know.
  18. Mine's a King vinyl. Great to be spurred on to play this one again and be reminded what a wonderful album this is. It starts quietly but after that it's mostly all high energy pushed on by Joe Chambers great drums. This has got to be one Hutcherson's best dates and as Sidewinder says it should be permanently inprint. Albert Stinson? A Hutcherson regular or a sub? Whatever, he adds a lot to the date. Great choice Sidewinder, thanks.
  19. I know that only too well
  20. Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'm going to pass on it. I have Catch Me and For Django on vinyl and the Joy Spring cd. I can probably do without the box.
  21. Tonight it's David Murray's Creole Project, part of the London Jazz Festival.
  22. I've been thinking about buying this for a while. I just need a little persuading that I want this enough to click the buy now button.
  23. When I saw the number of tracks I thought it miht be a bit fragmentary. Maybe it is but it all holds together rather well. Fine playing all round. Recommended, but as Chucks says, for fans.

  25. Probably not a lot of use but the obi on the Roach Amsterdam (6029) disc lists M'Boom Re; Percussion RVJ 6001 Max Roach/Dollar Brand; Stream Of Consciousness, RVJ 6016 Max Roach; Solo; RVJ 6021. Billy Harper's is Believer 6083 Plenty of gaps to fill in.
