  1. You got me. I'm not all that familiar with their jazz scene.
  2. That's too bad, if that turns out to be the case. I already own Evolution, Some Other Stuff and probably most if not all of his sideman dates that have been issued. I'd really like to see an official release (hoping that there would be a nice Patrick Roques cover to go with it) with decent sound and maybe as a bonus, that unreleased '68 McLean date. Well, one can always wish
  3. I'm in Pittsburgh twice a week, so if you find out anything about where he's playing etc, please post. Maybe I can catch one of his gigs.
  4. Nice! Been looking for that one for a bit now. If you don't have it already, hunt like a wolf for the Batised Traveler, which is the other UK Columbia released in that "British Jazz Reissue Series."
  5. Can we start a wish list for the 2008 conniosseur series? Sam Rivers: A New Conception Larry Young: Contrasts and/or Of Heaven and Earth Tyrone Washington: Natural Essence Jackie McLean: Hipnosis (and maybe include a session supposedly cut in '68, but rejected because McLean didn't like Norman Connor's drumming???)
  6. When I first saw the title of this thread, I was almost certain it was another "Lonehill" release
  7. Well I decided to take advantage of the 40% off sale on cd's at Borders and picked up Kirk in Copenhagen for $7.50.
  8. Today: Howard Johnson and Gravity: Right Now-Verve. Used for $6
  9. Is this the Columbia CD that was issued in the UK? If it is, you majorly scored! That one is as rare as hen's teeth!
  10. Thanks for the thread. It was great to re-read all the first hand accounts that other posters had of Ayler.
  11. "missed the big High/Low show by about 2 years" Caught this show at the Cleveland Museum of Art. I specifically wanted to see the Michael Snow movies, which were really interesting. I also went to their Antioch, Picasso, and Guilded Age exhibits as well.
  12. I don't know if the movie has been discussed in its own thread, but I have plans to see it here in Cleveland on November 18th. Has anyone seen the movie yet? Anybody got plans to see it? I'm particularly interested in the footage they discovered of one of the Ayler bands in the mid-sixties (maybe the band with Don Ayler, Sampson, Fowell and Harris maybe?). If you have seen the movie, can you provide a brief review of it? Thanks, HG
  13. Like Muhammad's playing especially on Fank Wright's Unity which was just recently released on ESP.
  14. My Right Foot.
  15. It may have been the 60's, but I don't have the resource to verify it. I believe the same thing happened to Ornette Coleman. From what I remember reading from somewhere, he was "paid" or "told" to sit out a couple of years (somewhere between '63 and '66; The Empty Foxhole was his first studio album in years) by thugs who may have been hired by the major labels because artists like Coleman and Taylor were taking a chunk of the business away from the commerical acts. Again, no way I can verify the story, just remember reading it and I could have it wrong. Does anyone know if that actually happened or not? I think Sunny Murray was also targeted, which he talked about in an interview he gave awhile back. I think the other stories came from an article I read about the BYG/Actuel label and their dealings, but I'm not sure.
  16. I won't. I have an interest in going there too.
  17. Wow. Thanks everyone. I think I'm really going to dig Reckless Records. Just poking around on their website has gotten me pretty excited!
  18. "im gonna let my noob show here, jackiemac?" This can be quickly fixed, since most of McLean's cds can be had at midprice. I'd start with Let Freedom Ring, then Destination Out!
  19. Not that much of a fan then. This has been discussed for months in the film media. Great reviews. Check out http://www.rottentomatoes.com Village Voice says it may be the best Coen brothers film ever. Not playing here yet. Opens soon. Filmed in the area I live in. Cormac McCarthy lives here too - although is pretty reclusive. Yeah, it turns that she's not as huge of a fan as I thoght. She actually only liked Fargo but added that she thought that "O' Brother Where Art Thou?" was total crap and the soundtrack was just a bad"
  20. Going to Chicago next month and have day to shop around the downtown area (near the Magnificent Mile). Are there any cd stores in the vicinity?
  21. Just asked. She knows nothing about it.
  22. My wife is a big Coen Brothers fan, I'll ask her if she knows anything about the movie.
  23. I wouldn't mind a classical forum; at the very least, maybe I'll be exposed to a new composer or work that I've never heard of before. That's how I've broaden my tastes and interests in jazz here.
  24. Don't remember where I read it but Cecil Taylor was asked what he thought of Miles Davis's playing and he said something along the lines of, he plays pretty good for a millionaire.
