  1. It'd be interesting to wonder if someone would've posed a similar question about Baroque music in the 17th century: would there be fans in the 18th, 19th or even the 20th century?
  2. Ok, I was just reading the Verve label breakdown at the Orange Verve label thread, and I'm beginning to believe that I have somehow found a damn fine copy of this album. It does not look like either a stereo or MGM reissue (it has MG V-8306 and Verve Records, Inc. Made in the USA on the bottom of the label). It has the silver trumpeter logo on a black label and what looks like a deep groove. Besides some hairline scrathes here and there it still has a good deal of the its original luster. Did I somehow luck out here getting this bad boy for $4.98??? (Funny enough, they had a Debut/OJC of a Miles Davis record priced at a $100!) This album just seems to nice to be an original. Besides the dude's name and 'jazz' written in black marker on the back, this album was by and large well taken care of. Any thoughts from the record experts?
  3. Spun it again today.
  4. Just picked up a copy of Sound Grammar today, and I'm enjoying this quite a bit. I know Greg Cohen from a DIW disk I have of his called 'Way Low' so I found it interesting to hear him in Ornette's company. I was kind of hoping that similar to Bill Dixon's Berlin Abozzi, that both Cohen and Tony Falanga would both be plucking their basses, but it appears that Tony bows for the entire disk. It sounds like Dernardo is drumming much like he drummed for Prime Time, which is not a bad thing, but in this context, maybe not entirely appropriate. Regardless, its nice to hear something new since when, Tone Dialing?
  5. In the used CD bins today: Ornette Coleman-Sound Grammar-Sound Grammar Jimmy Raney Visits Paris-Dawn Anthony Braxton-Standards Volume I-Magenta Records
  6. When I picked it up today, I realized that I made a couple of mistakes; good ones that is. First, it does have the trumpeter logo (and it looks like it has a deep groove, but I don't know enough about Verve to substantiate that) and not the "T" logo like I originally thought. Second, the cover, sans the writing on the back is in excellent shape: crisp colors, no ring wear and the spine, corners are sharp. There's a small split starting at the opening of the jacket and that's it. As for the vinyl, there are some spindel marks and a couple of hairline scratches. Besides that it still retains most of its original luster. I did go ahead and frame the cover; one of my favorite Verve jackets.
  7. Thanks! I missed it the first time 'round.
  8. The Smith is unresearched nonsense and makes Kofsky look right-of-centre. Dizzy Gillespie is quoted saying something that includes the word 'people' and is immediately co-opted by Smith as a card-carrying fellow traveller. I read Smith this morning (it was a real short and fast read) and concur that a good deal of it is non-sense. Especially when there's a caption under a picture of Miles Davis that Captitol used for the repackaging of Birth of the Cool (with the bonus live date) and he says that this is a picture of the "cover" of Birth of the Cool.
  9. West Coast Jazz is my favorite jazz book - it's definitely worth considering, no matter what you are looking for The book so far seems pretty interesting (I've read the first couple of chapters) for example, I did not know that Chet Baker was pumping gas in the early 70's
  10. I have a Nike golf bag, but it does not appear to have the Tiger Woods logo on it.
  11. Thanks, I'll pick it up today. In fact, I love that cover so much, I think I'll frame it.
  12. Maybe I was being too critical with the vinyl. It has some light scrathes here and there but nothing major. It still has a pretty nice shine to it. The label on the cover does say "Clef Series" along with the Verve logo, so that would make sense.
  13. Beats the hell out of freezin' butt snow, doncha think? You bet :rsmile:
  14. Crap. Back to Boston on Saturday.

  16. Well ok, not a "great find" yet, but I have a vinyl copy of Sonny Stitt's "The Hard Swing" on hold. It seems to be a black label deep groove "T" Verve logo. Vinyl's in good to fair shape and the cover's in really good shape except for the owner's name and "jazz" written on the back. They're asking $4.98 for it at Half Price books. So what's the concensus? Could it be a reprint or perhaps it happens to be a steal? Keep in mind that I don't know Verve vinyl very well, so if something's "obvious" just assume that I don't know it. Thanks, HG
  17. Actually, pretty balmy for a mid-October Cleveland evening...I'm not complaining or anything
  18. you betcha. Trane and Pharoah say "hey"
  19. Thanks GOM! I'm starting it this weekend.
  20. In case anyone's interested, here's some of the books that I'm considering using: The Freedom Principle by John Litweiler (which also inlcudes a quote from a Downbeat review by Larry Kart on the back cover ) West Coast Jazz by Ted Giola Notes and Tones by Arthur Taylor I found another one by Martin Smith called "John Coltrane: jazz, racism and resistance). Any thoughts on this one?
  21. Fine playing indeed. RIP
