  1. Ah man, This is sad news. I had a chance to meet Donald at a screening for a free jazz movie being shown at the Cinamateque in Cleveland a few years back but I had to work that night. A friend of mine who went crowed about how he got to meet him and that he was a really nice guy. Apparently some fans brought their Albert Ayler records for him to autograph. I wish I could've been able to go that night. I liked Donald's contributions to Ayler's records, espcially Bells, Love Cry and the complete Village Vanguard recordings, and I particularly like the tunes he wrote. I never got to hear the "Lve in Florence" disks. Were these any good? RIP Donald.
  2. One of my favorite GG albums. Grant and Larry work it out on this one! The first tune is probably my fav, but just by a slither with the others.
  3. Passing out candy as I type this. Happy H. Everyone :rsmile:
  4. Howz about Archie Shepp's Live in San Francisco...is that scary enough?
  5. A strong recommendation for The Moontrane on Muse, if you can land a copy. I also like the live Woody Shaw dates on High Note. Oh and I forgot to add the Freddie Hubbard/Woody Shaw Sessions on BN too.
  6. Someone unloaded 5 Erimite titles at a local Half Price books once. I bought them all for $6 bucks a pop, along with snagging a William Parker Erimite in the $1 bin. Not to mention that there was also Brotzmann Okka (Stonewater) there later on for $6 sealed. Of course, I bought that one too. When I compare those prices at Half Price to the BN's and Columbia's they carry, it turns out that used copies of those are also about $6.
  7. Depends on the cd and the circumstance. I think I've dropped $20-30 on new cardboard Japanese imports, but by and large I buy almost strickly used and that range goes anywhere between $1-$15.
  8. http://smintair.com/ I can assure you that I wasn't on that plane!
  9. I've seen all of the episodes you've mentioned except the first one, which I just looked up, is apparently a new one. The Egyptian Air one was indeed a good one, along with the episode about the windshield blowing out because of the wrong screws. There are two other episodes that really got to me. The first one, is the episode about Alaskan Air that left, I believe, Mexico. The tail rudders were broken and the plane went into a tail spin, including spinning around completely and crashing in the Pacific Ocean. What the passengers and crew must've gone through must have been horrific. The other one was a a mid-air collision between a freight and passenger plane. What was heartbreaking was that the passenger plane was mostly children. But the story didn't end there, when it culminated with a parent murdering the air traffic controller that made the error. Seconds from Disaster is another excellent show, and I particularly like how they back up and show what happens right before the disaster itself. Favorites are the Oklahoma City bombing, Mt. St. Helens and the Paris-concord crash.
  10. Aircraft have quite different lifespans from automobiles, so an 18 year old plane shouldn't be cause for concern, in general. Airlines (at least in this country) are very serious about maintaining them on a regular basis after so many flight hours. They also go through regular meticulous inspections from nose to tail. The military still has Vietnam era helicopters in the fleet, and there are B-52s in the Air Force that have been in service since 1955. Luckily, I've never been on a flight that has had a problem. -_-
  11. Inspired from the "flying dinosaurs" thread, there's an excellent program on Nat. G. O. that's been on now for a few years called "Air Emergency". The program first goes over the airline accident then reports on what has been done to improve airline aviation since the accident. Its a great program that's meant to educate the public on such events and does not sensationalize the accident itself. Any other viewers?
  12. How is the Impulse Book then? I've had my eye on it for awhile. Now reading: White on White/Black on Black edited by George Yancy.
  13. And I've flown on planes, even this year, where they still have the ashtrays built into the arms of the chairs, when smoking was permitted in the cabin. I believe smoking was banned on airplanes in 1990. Now that's at least an 18 year old plane.
  14. I've caught this show now twice (only because that I saw that Ben Stein's co-hosting, of course ) But I mean, what can you say? There are clearly a couple of really intelligent people on this show (the Ph.D. cand. at Duke for example) and that makes it interesting. But like all reality shows, they need to introduce an element of drama (with the Russian guy for example) and that adds an element of mundaneness. Whatever. I probably will never go out of my way to watch another episode.
  15. Happy Birthday and likewise, thanks for the many interesting posts
  16. Ditto here. If you can find Something Personal, snag it. It's almost as beautiful as Easterly Winds. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for it.
  17. Ok, ok. Honestly, I don't do much buying in the LP realm. Concerning the Debut/OJC business, I told the manager about it (who I know pretty well) and later on in the week I saw it repriced at $20!!! Still highway robbery! No kidding, but I think I'd be really pushing it telling him that that's too pricey. Like Brownie said, the OJC should be at most $4.98
  18. I was just reading a Moondog thread in the "Artists" section yesterday, all because I saw a used cd copy of Moondog's "More." Interesting guy. And I think I'm going to pick up that disk.

The last line just cracks me up, bullshit or not... Thanks for sharing that. Worth it just for the Yardbirds quote alone :rsmile:

  21. Don't know if this has been mentioned but I'd like to put a word out for the NRG Ensemble's "This is my House" which I think nicely showcases the band, esp Ken Vandermark after Hal Russell's death. I have a handful of recordings from this wonderful label. Here's what I have: Anthony Braxton: For Alto Anthony Braxton: Three Comps. In New Jazz Sun Ra: Sun Song AEC: Live Roscoe Mitchell: Sound Now it seems I have a lot more to pick up

Yes, Student Studies, Unit Structures, and Conquistador are great, great discs. And you're spot on about Love Cry, the interplay between Silva and Graves is amazing! Thanks for the recommendations; I'm always on the look out for Silva related projects.
  23. Sad news. I just became familiar with Wilson when the Conn of Easterly Winds was reissued. Probably one of the best surprise purchases for me in recent times (Foster's Manhatten Fever being another) which has gotten regular rotation since I purchased it. I would really like to hear his other BN's (missed Something Personal) and Atlantic (?) sides.

Welcome! Very much appreciate Alan Silva's work. I'd really like to hear his ESP Skillfullness, but that seems to be OOP and on the pricier end. As leader/co-leader, I have a Hero's Welcome w/ Wm Parker and the Allstar Game with Parker/Allen/Drake and Jordan, both on Eremite. My favorite sidman work is Sunny Murray's self-titled ESP and Ayler's Love Cry. I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.
