  1. I have about 40 Trane albums and I haven't listened to them as of late because I've been listening to so much other music lately. I snagged "Dear Old Stockholm" about three weeks ago and I couldn't believe that I let that slide for so long; Roy Haynes is a mofo on these dates Favorites are Ole Coltrane, Africa Brass, Meditations, Sun Ship, At the Village Vanguard Again!, Expression, and Om.

  3. Totally missed this series. But I keep my eyes peeled for them when I'm cd shopping.
  4. And he can swing too, like on Don Ellis' "Essence."
  5. I heard about this too. But I got some literature in the mail from "Antioch University" the other day Maybe they are just changing the structure of the school. If I recall Coretta Scott King attended Antioch.
  6. It is so cool that Henry is back and in full force Have a great b-day!
  7. One of my favorite Shorter albums by the way
  8. It may be helpful to see the entire photograph. I know what the entire Shorter photo looks like. Do we have the entire photo of the other dude? For all we know, he could've been getting ready to blow candles out on his birthday cake. Edit to say that of course Wayne was not originally blue, but it was the best I could do.
  9. I honestly can't remember where I read this, but I think Donald took it hard when Bob Thiele suggested that Albert fire Donald from the band because he wanted to continue playing jazz, because Thiele had different and more marketable plans for Ayler's music. I don't think Albert really wanted to fire his brother but he was ultimately pressured by Impulse! to do it. Come to think of it, the source maybe was the book included in the Ayler box set but I'm too lazy to check, but nonetheless, I recollect reading that Donald became depressed or something to that affect, and was scheduled to perform at a concert in '68, but he was so hammered and did not even show up with his trumpet that the crowd booed him off the stage. If I recall, what led to Albert's suicide was the pressure from his family and the burden of bringing Donald into the jazz life.
  10. No, "All about Jack-in-the-Box"...you know, for us fast-food freaks
  11. Monk -Bye Ya (especially the version on Monk's Dream, for Rouse alone ) Ayler-Holy Ghost (especially the version on the complete impulse! Greenwich Village recordings, I particularly like Donald Ayler's playing on this one)
  12. Glad I'm not alone in thinking of this song when I think of Dolphy (or Hutch for that matter). Nope you're not -_- The first few bars alone get me everytime. It is just amazing.
  13. I vaguely remember hearing a thump in the middle of the night once, but didn't make anything about and went back to sleep. When I woke up I figured out what that "thump" was. Apparantly it was my turn to have my house toilet papered and the thump came when some one broke my lamp post in the front of my house.
  14. Just learned that "My Name is Albert Ayler" is playing at the Cleveland Cinemateque on November 17th and 18th; the same venue that the Free Jazz movie was at and Donald was present at. If he was still alive, I'm fairly certain that he would've been there again, but that will never be. However, I am totally psyched that the Ayler movie is going to be playing here I can't wait
  15. Eric Dolphy-Hat and Beard Roland Kirk-Three For the Festival David S. Ware-Mikuro's Blues Dave Brubeck-In Your Own Sweet Way
  16. All the time. I used to read the booklets religiously, but nowadays I just put the cd in and hardly ever take the booklet out to see what it says. I simply don't have the time to do it anymore
  17. Its been a couple of years, but its now time to return to Ayler's Holy Ghost box set.
  18. But she "retired" again, right after the announcement that she tested positive during Wembledon.
  19. Dunno about that. I don't know how much, er, substance there to it all, but quite suddenly and in recent times tennis is smelling pretty grubby, what with stubborn reports of betting and corruption, and the forlorn figure of Nikolay Davydenko. Guilty or not his life must be hell at the moment. But he claims he is completely innocent. I don't know if the commission has ruled on it yet, but I really don't think he's been effected by it, as per the interviews and his demeanor. The last major controversy I can think of is when Canas was suspended for using a type of steroid.
  20. I remember being struck by Woody's playing on several occasions, as a sideman alone: The Jody Grind, The Complete Is Sessions, 'Bout Soul, Demon's Dance, Passing Ships. No matter where he played, he made the record something special. In short, Woody Shaw was a grade A badazz.
  21. Just read this too! Reminds me when Jennifer Capriati was busted with possession of crack cocaine and heroine way back when. Its newsworthy because this kind of controversy doesn't happen very often in tennis.
  22. I don't disagree. Yes, Norman Howard and Don Cherry were more suitable for Ayler's music, particularly on Spirits and Ghosts, respectively. There's a thread somewhere on Norman Howard and his music. Despite some botched graphic/liner issues, Burn Baby Burn is outstanding! Listening to Don Ayler now and his concept is very powerful in the immediate sense. I heard a sample off of Burn Baby Burn and I am definitely planning on picking that one up!
  23. I don't disagree. Yes, Norman Howard and Don Cherry were more suitable for Ayler's music, particularly on Spirits and Ghosts, respectively.
  24. Does anyone know if Concord has plans of launching a Fantasy or Contemporary series similar to what they've done with the Prestige and Riverside catalogues? I sure would like to see the Coleman's, Taylor and some more Pepper released in spiffy new editions. Same goes for Brubeck.
  25. Pat Metheny/Ornette Coleman-Song X 20th Anniversary-Nonesuch Never heard this album before but it is absolutely excellent
