why do we collect all this music?
AndrewHill replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I like going to used cd stores too for several reasons. One, it is a thrill to find a used cd that's been out of print for cheap. I especially have had excellent luck in the dollar bins, where the store clerks are not aware of what they have. For example, I found William Parker's 2cd set Peach Orchard with no flaws for a buck. I have also built a repore with the clerks to the point where they will hold incoming jazz cds behind the counter and let me have first dibs on them. They will also give me discounts on some of those items, for example, a store had Hutch's Total Eclipse for $15 and they knocked off $5 for me. And three, it beats buying cds new. I save money, and I can get pass those stupid stickers that they put all over the jewel boxes and so forth. That way, I feel I can justify buying as many cds as I do. I have shrewdly come up with a plan for the new cd purchases by putting them on my Christmas list and I let the wife buy those, then I don't have to explain to her througout the year why I'm spending so much money; I let her spend it! -
I guess I miss this, what happened exactly?

Mike Ladd-Welcome to the Afterfuture. Found used for $6 today!

Wow, my wife just told me this when I just walked in the door. I'm not a fan either, but I recognize too how much joy he brought to so many lives. RIP.

V. Williams won tonight. Watching Federer-Roddick now and its after 11:30pm and Federer has taken the first set in a ties break and we are now heading to a second set tie break-I don't think I'm going to make to 2am again!

Nadal - Ferrer match went on until 1:50am with a surprising four set win by Ferrer! That's his biggest win yet. Nadal was in serious pain in the fourth set collapsing after Ferrer went up 5 games to two.

So in between tennis, I was flipping around and No Reservations is on and Bourdain is covering Ireland. This show is cool as shit! Nothing like watching him on a train in the morning on his way to Dublin, and the man cracks open a can of Guinness to wash down his breakfast! Sure wish I would've caught the Cleveland episode. -
Tough five-setter between Haas and Blake. Blake lost in the 5th set tie break.

Its already been won by Angel Cabrera

I'm quite happy with the Fontana edition from the late 80's, and it includes a number of bonus tracks! -

Interesting day today. Huge upset in the women's draw today: Sharapova...out! Hingis...out! And how about Donald Young and John Isner! I'm really impressed with both of these players, especially when Isner took a set off Federer! I followed both Young and Isner througout the summer during the US Open series and Isner managed to capture unofficially, the most aces that were not in a grand slam. Young was ranked one in the juniors and was actually in both the regular and juniors draws at the US Open. And although they both lost today, Young and Isner made it quite clear that they have tremendous talent and I think that American tennis has a fighting chance in the future. And a word for Blake too (who plays tonight) He is also having a terrific run, after that huge win in Hew Haven. Very intereting day today so far...

Yes, great match until they were 4 games all in the fifth. Probably the best match thus far, with I'm sure many more to come.

There is mention of it in the Pepper thread at AAJ. Around post #109 or so. Sounds interesting! Thanks Aggie87. Well I wandered over to Half Price today and low and behold, its was still there, so I took a stab at it (the 20% Labor day sale brought it down to $5!) I have to say that there are a lot of vocals. Maybe too much for my tastes. I liked the track that was on the TuTu cd but this sounds like a totally different affair. I'm not entirely sure if I really like it yet. I'll have to spin it some more and see...

Just saw 'Afro-Indian Blues' at Half Price the other day. Is this any good? The only other Pepper I have is on a TuTu cd 'Munster Festival' with Mangelsdorff, Schofield et al. Don't see his stuff around that often on the shelves.

No Hill either. Agree that this collection has some holes, but at least he has some McLean in there

what are you drinking right now?

More French Vanilla coffee. -
Looked like there was a good deal of Japanese pressings in there, but man, could you handle those records any rougher? Saw Hank's BLP 1560 in there. That one usually fetches a K or so if its an original, and he just threw that one in that messy pile too. That was painful to watch.

You can't get there from here. But how can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all? Now that's deep -
The third person to the right is playing a contrabass clarinet. I know this because I used to play one in my middle and high school concert bands-I was one of the few people in Florida who played one at the time because when we would compete statewide, no one else had one in their bands. It is a very unwieldy instrument, especially for a teenager. Its interesting because I started out on a B Flat, switched to alto, then bass and my band director suggested I switch to contrabass (and I actually wanted to play tenor sax! But my parents reasoned that a clarinet was cheaper to purchase!) He said the music for it was same as that for a tuba. In fact, I used to play the same music that a tubist would. At the time, I had to sit on six stacked chairs to play it and the case it comes in was about four feet long. I won second place solo on the contrabass clarinet in a state wide competition back in the early 80's-and the horn was damaged to boot. I think the judges just simply couldn't believe their ears and that a contrabass clarinet was capable of being played like that. Hope that helps.

The reason for my qualification is that I know a lot of people who like McPhee but who don't like Duval or Rosen. -- I've liked some of what I've heard, but on the whole the best of McPhee is the Hat Art stuff (mostly o/p, alas). Yes, the Hat Art material is top shelf-hard to pick favorites, but Topology is right up there, with Linear B and Old Eyes and Mysteries following that.
