  1. Liner notes to Jim Hall's Jazz Guitar. Okay, done with that now onto...
  2. Same here. Same here. I listened to this about a week ago and now I can't get "The Lion and the Wolff" outa my head. Great tune.
  3. I was wondering if anyone knew/knows if there were any racial tensions in jazz between the two coasts between say 1945-60. My main objective is to try to analyze the potential issue from the perspective of Critical Race Theory which is three pronged: 1) race realism, 2) race essentialism and 3) race constructionism. I know that there were racial tensions on the West Coast between blacks and whites, such as the issues Art Pepper discusses in Straight Life , and there were obviously racial tensions between blacks and whites on the East Coast, such as when Miles Davis was assaulted by a white police officer in front of a club he was playing at in August 1959, and obviously, there were white musicians on the East Coast and black musicians on the West Coast, but what I really want to know is if black musicians from the East Coast played on the West Coast and were subject to racial tensions and vice versa for white musicians playing from the West Coast on the East Coast; in other words, did black musicians from the East Coast collide with white musicians from the West Coast that resulted into some form of racial tension. This "tension" can take place on either coast, or anywhere for that matter. And this racial tension does not have to be limited to just musicians; thus, it could also be between black musicians from the East Coast playing on the West Coast and audience members/record producers/promoters, and the same with white musicians from the West Coast playing on the East Coast and audience members/record producers/promoters. Thus, I'm seeking verification that this may have happened and also recommendations for resources, books, and articles. In other words, do I have a topic idea? Thanks in advance, HG Edited to add another idea.
  4. Joe Pass? Milt Jackson? Count Basie? Oscar Peterson?....Oh, I give up who?

  7. That is completely ridiculous. She was a friend of one of my friends from college. She apparently came home unexpectedly one day, and caught him in a negotiated state staring at naked women on the computer. They broke up that day because she 'caught' him cheating with a woman on the screen. Her reasoning was that he should've been staring at pictures of her. Well, had she offered to pose for some hot shots? She should've, she was hot

  9. Christmas Ale should be back on sale any day now
  10. I know some women (which I've never dated) that equate watching porn with cheating. They think you're literally having an affair.
  11. Wow ask a simple question if anybody has any info on these re-releases (because I saw no info anywhere) and what do I get? A bunch of dick heads telling me to show myself. You guys are a classy bunch! A classy bunch of jazz snobs. I guess if I have a question I won't ask here for fear of some ass jumping down my throat. How to chase people away... No wonder jazz has such a small audience. We seem to make sure it stays that way!
  12. Ok, so I pulled the trigger and picked it up today. I have to say that my first impression so far is really good. Haden's bass on the first track is haunting and mysterious. I haven't listened to the rest of the cd yet, because I've had too many interuptions from my kids and so forth. But so far, I'm very happy I got it. Great sound too. For those in the know: has 'Shades' or 'Backhand' ever been released on cd? I did a cursory search with no results.
  13. Keith Jarrett's Death and the Flower CD used for $8!!!!!!!!!
  14. This time, they'll have the Impulse logo on the front.
  15. Aristotle's Complete Works Volume II ....for school.....
  16. Totally off subject, but the R n R Hall of Fame is cool in my book for including in their huge drumstick display a stick from Tony Williams. I believe it was from the 'Lifetime/Emergency' days. BTW, it is stange to hear Madonna as an inductee; I guess it has to do with the fact that I've watched the 'Lucky Star' video when I was growing up.
  17. Honestly I didn't know about these titles until you just brought them up otherwise I certianly would've.
  18. The TOCJ sounds pretty tasty to me.
  19. I originally was going to start a thread seeking opinions of 'Death and the Flower' since I have an opportunity to pick it up for $8 at a used cd store, but then I was thinking that I really want to wrap my ears around Jarrett's entire Impulse catalogue, so I want to know what everyone's opinions are of everything he did for the label as leader. I have 'Treasure Island' and 'Mysteries' and I enjoy both of these a great deal. I have never heard 'Bop-Be' and 'Byablue' but I believe these were issued domestically as 'Silence' so I left that off the poll to cut down on redundency. So tell me what you think!
  20. Machine Gun. If your future wife can get through that, you're in like Flint. "In like Flynn" (as in Errol) is the phrase. Considering its original sexual connotation, its especially appropriate for future marital bliss: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-inl1.htm Yes, I've seemed to have fallen into that category of people who have mixed up the movie title with the original expression. my bad
  21. Surprised there's no Mingus titles in there. I've been trying to hunt those down for ages!
  22. My eyes nearly popped outa my head when I saw this sitting in a dollar bin at Half Price Books! I agree with some of the posts above that this is a bit unfocused with so-so sound. It is hardly unlistenable though, and I particularly like some of the ensemble passages. Glad to have it, since the only other Moholo lead date I own is 'Tern' with Stabbins and Tippin. Now that's a great date and thankfully more widely available due to the UMS issues, then the Ogun dates.
