Because of the KD thread I picked up: Kenny Dorham-Quiet Kenny-New Jazz RVG, which I'm thoroughly enjoying as we speak.

That was just plain sad. Beckham strikes me as a genuine guy with good intentions, but the level of hype is sickening, annoying, and insulting to anyone who really appreciates the game. What... you don't watch the darts tournaments? And don't forget arm wrestling and hot dog eating contests.

I think that's correct. I never needed to log in before. Now I have to sometimes (and sometimes not - dunno why that is) but never realise it until I want to post something, unless I'm looking at the sexiest album sleeves thread If this is happening to everyone, then I guess that might account for it. MG The only time that I've had to re-log in is when the board went down[because I never log out]. Btw, if you leave this site without logging out, do others see you as an active/present member at the bottom of the Forum Home page? [inquiring minds need to know.] I never log out either; but every so often, it makes me log in. Pain in the bumhole. MG I stayed logged in too, but if you delete the cookie, you will have to log back in.

Me too. I have to admit, I'm a poker watching junkie. I don't even mind watching the same episode four or five times (although we need some more 2007 WSOP installments besides the only two events that they've been playing to death). I was at the WSOP a couple of weeks ago to watch the main event, so I keep hoping that I'll see me on TV .

A word for Art Blakey's 'The Jazz Messengers' on Columbia and the Transition 'Watkins at Large' (or the 2cd Conn. w/ Byrd). Watkins was a major talent that had the potential of being something really great, if his life wasn't cut short. That seems to happen way too often in jazz: Scott LaFaro, Clifford Brown, Richie Powell, Tina Brooks, Sonny Clark and on and on.

Well I'm speaking now as a former 'guest.' I was a member of the old BNBB before that blew up and then I stumbled onto this site and read it for a couple of years...as a 'guest.' But I decided that the water's fine, I don't mind the hazing rituals and I am wearing britches. So there you are

Favorite packaging of box sets
AndrewHill replied to medjuck's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I like Dave Brubecks's For All Time because three of the titles in the box do not seem to be available domestically, but they look like regular Columbia/Legacy cd reissues, and they are very easy to access. Miles Davis at the Black Hawk is packaged similarly to the Brubeck and I like it for the same reasons: that they reproduce the original artwork. The Ayler Spirit Box gets major plaudits just for the book alone; I have never seen such an informative inclusion in any box set that I've encountered. And the reproductions of the Spiritual Unity Booklet and Slugs flier are really cool bonuses, not to mention the treasure trove of music. The only down side is that its a big awkward box and it actually sits on top of my bookshelf all by itself; there's no real convenient place to put it. A tiny quibble for such a monumental achievement nonetheless. -
Going to LA for a week....any suggestions for
AndrewHill replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That place used to be my first port-of-call in LA - but I'm talking 10ish years ago or before, sadly. Bought a couple of the Miles CD sets there at good discounts (which was virtually impossible at the time in the UK) plus they always had some rare TOCJs lurking in the racks. Astonishing place, at its peak. Right on. The second to the last time I was out there, about seven years ago, it used to take me over two hours to comb through their jazz bins-it just seemed like there was no end to it. No other Tower that I've been to (perhaps only the Tower in Soho riveled it; they did have a jazz mini-lp cd bin) came nowhere close to the Hollywood Tower. You mean the place in NYC on E.4th? They got those from the Princeton Record Exchange. I think so. There was a McDonalds nearby, because that's where my wife and kids sat while I shopped for nearly two hours. I ended up not buying anyof them because I could basically get two other cd's for the price of a mini-lp. But I recall that they had a lot of Prestige titles more than anything else. It was still cool though that they had an endcap just loaded with them. -
landing the big one

I'd say that you can't put a price on love. Having said that, if she loves you, then it shouldn't make a difference how much you spend on the ring. I married my wife when I was a senior in college and I didn't have a lot of money to spend, but ten years later, that has hardly made a difference, and we still wear the rings that we married each other with. Its more symbolic for us, then the amount of money we spent on them. I hope that helps and good luck! HG -
The Five Albums That Changed the Way You Hear Music
AndrewHill replied to md655321's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'll give it a go. 1. Albert Ayler-Spiritual Unity 2. Ornette Coleman-This is Our Music 3. Peter Brotzmann-Machine Gun 4. Andrew Hill-Judgment! 5. Eric Dolphy-Out to Lunch! There are many others, but these particular albums are the ones that made me think differently about the music. -
Fish, rice and assorted veggies.

Today, there's a nice cool breeze coming off the lake. I can finally give the AC a break.

Sweet Clip Concerning the Joe Henderson albums, I wanted to single out 'In 'n' Out' and 'Our Thing' as my favorites; his playing on these records is phenomenal. Great stuff from a wonderful partnership. I also really dig 'Whistle Stop' and 'Una Mas' (and yeah, I don't mind hearing it 'one more time' -_- )

Games--Backgammon, Go, Chess, Card Games
AndrewHill replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Played chess a lot in college, and even made it to the quarterfinals in a tournament there one year. But after I graduated, the crowd that I used to play with vanished with it and I haven't played seriously for about 10 years. Love poker, esp. hold 'em, black jack and any sort of trivia game, esp Trivial Pursuit. I also love a good spades game, if I can get four players together. Used to have a group and we would get together once a week for years. But those peeps have moved on as well. -
That's great news! Be nice if Butch eventually gets some similar attention that Henry Grimes got. Does that mean that Butch is no longer at that institution, per that article that surfaced about him awhile back? I think it was in the 'artists' section.

And the Tower in Hollywood if it isn't gone was pretty decent, the last time I was out there, which was about three years ago. I keep on kicking myself for not buying Hill's Eternal Spirit there. It was a leftover from the CC series, but Tower jacked up the price because they knew it was OOP. -
I will spin Coltrane's Sound today-the album that introduced me to Trane's music.

Saw the new Sunny Murray ESP artwork and along with Spirits Rejoice, I wish that they would've released these albums with the original artwork, which is so raw and contemporary. I'm also not crazy about those twofers, like Bells/Prophecy either where they overlay one cover over another. As a consequence, I'll end up holding on to the Murray Abraxis and the Ayler Claibres for the original artwork alone. A shame, because I really want to support and buy from the new ESP Disk company. And although its the music that really matters, those changes to the original artwork are really turning into a distraction.

I'll never forget the moment that I put on the first disk of 'Live in Greenwich Village: The Complete Impulse Recordings' on impulse! and as soon as 'Holy Ghost' came on, I almost froze in my tracks...personally, this is one of the most powerful pieces of music that I've ever heard! Truth is Marching On! edited: I looked at my copy of the Albert Ayler book in the spirits box and couldn't find that pic of Ayler in golf attire. Its out there somewhere.
