  1. I was looking at the script for this one and saw its comprised of two dates-one in '68 and the other in '70. My CD copy of 'Early Circle' is material recorded in '70. Is this the first half of this BN LP two-fer? Was the '68 material ever reissued on CD?
  2. Missed the 2CD Circle ECM set, but I have 'Early Circle' on Blue Note, with the same line up. I agree that it seems his legacy is somewhere between Tones/Inner Space and the RTF records. I absolutely enjoy Tones, but my favorite is the Complete IS sessions (the Solid State material, sans Now He Sings, Now He Sobs?). I also like the two volume solo disks 'Solos and Improvisations' on ECM as well. Besides that, I don't reach for much else.

    Hal Russell

I have no Russell, so I was glad to see a used copy of the Finnish/Swedish Tour and I dig it. The Frank Zappa analogy is pretty accurate, with a little John Zorn thrown in the mix.
  4. Neither me nor the wife have any, but one of my brother-in-laws has a lot of them.
  5. Total Eclipse is a terrific album, and could really improve from an RVG treatment. Anyone know if this on the RVG radar?
  6. Great albums. Glad to see they're back in print.
  7. Simply, if you can find it for cheap, you'll not be disappointed. I have not seen if for sale used since it went out of print, but be patient, it will show up some day. Try not to pay $50+ for it.
  8. I missed this show initially, but I want to go back and watch it, because I like Kevin James, especially in 'Switch'. He's hysterical!

    Charlie Haden

HG -- I completely agree with you about Haden's playing on Science Fiction -- it's incredible. He recorded Expectations* with Keith Jarrett around the same time and his playing there is just as great. Guy ps I mention this album specifically because it's also on Columbia, and Charlie has a very similar sound on it. I missed on Expetations because I saw it at Half Price, and came back to get it and it was gone. I really like Haden's contributions on Jarret's records on Impulse!

    Charlie Haden

I know I'm late to this thread, but I would like to say that I'm a fan of Haden. And although I really like the Montreal Tapes (own the Bley/Motion, Cherry/Blackwell, Rubacala/Motion, Lib Orch.) I really like him best with Ornette. And I mean there are levels of Haden's playing that are great with Ornette and then there are times where he is exemplary. I really thought he was a nice fit in Ornette's outfit from the outset; I like every Atlantic side he appears on, but I was really BLOWN away with his contribution on Science Fiction. That is, his sound, his style, and he just hit all the right notes at the right time on that album, and consequently, he made me a bigger, fan, and made me really appreciate his gifts. A word too, for Soapsuds, Soapsuds. I really like him and Ornette alone. He really is an accomplished musician. On the side, he came to the Cleveland Museum of Art in support of his latest disk (Land of the Sun) and I passed. I only did that, because there was rumor that he was not playing as well because of a pitbull attack on his (left?) hand. Can anyone verify that?
  11. I own the entire British version of "The Office." Definitely a worthwhile purchase, as I've watched them all the way through at least five times. Hysterical stuff! I tried watching the British version on BBC and I have to admit that I didn't find as funny as the American version. But that could be because I'm a Steve Carrell fan. My wife and I both love the show and we have watched the dvd's quite a bit.
  12. I was just listening to some sound clips of Foster's Manhatten Fever and I have to say that this sounds like a real good one, especially that first track 'Little Miss No Nose.' I mean its nothing revolutionary, but it sort of sounds like 'The Sidewinder' meets 'Easterly Winds'- I think I'll be picking that one up! Already planning on getting the Hill. I don't own the Mosaic, so its new music for me. I probably will eventually pick up the Cox.
  13. The Total Eclipse CD (if found) sounds perfectly fine, it is a remix by Malcolm Addey, the only possible complaint is that, due to the state of digital equipment at the time it was remastered, Harold Land sounds a bit on the metallic side. Total Eclipse is an absolute stone classic and should be at the top of the list for an RVG remaster, but my suspicion is - since they originally did a remix for the first CD issue which was very unusual at the time - there are master tape issues, or at least, the sound of the masters (reverb) are at issue. Yeah, it would be a logical move to RVG Total Eclipse next, since they've redone Happenings and Oblique (never thought I see that one RVG'd). My guess is that if they do another Hutch date, they would choose Stick Up first (although I'm fine with the sound on that one). Components could improve from an RVG treatment too, but it doesn't appear that one is on the RVG radar. I don't think Medina or Patterns were popular enough to see a reissue (they vanished pretty fast, especially Medina), which again is a shame, since both albums are very very good.
  14. I played Total Eclipse this morning to listen for the reverb (I don't want to derail the thread because its the music not the sonics that we're discussing) and did not notice the reverb so much on the first two tracks, but starting with 'Matrix' on its very evident. It also reminded me what a great album this is. Does anyone else have the original cd issue (not the CC reissue) where if you look at the bottom of the cd, there's a bunch of tiny little dots all over it? Is that part of the manufacturing process or is this cd just getting old. Strange.
  15. Yes, you're starting to make me feel really lucky! I feel really, really lucky, then. I got mine in a cut-out bin at the music store across the street from where I work! I guess I'm sorta of lucky as I bought both Patterns and Medina when the first cd issues of them came out. Total Eclipse was the icing on the cake-found used for 10 smackers.
  16. I remember there was thread on jazz tunes appearing in commercials a long time ago, but I couldn't find it (went through 20 pages worth!) but I remember hearing Dolphy's 'Hat and Beard' in a car commerical once, which was quite arresting. So anyway, I was watching TV today (what else is new) and a Ruby Tuesday's commerical comes on and I recognized the tune almost immediately-Its The Three Sounds' Live at the It Club-featuring Gene Harris and the tune is 'Funky Pullett'. Quite obscure choice of song for a burger commerical, and when I pointed it out to the wife, she's like oh, whatever. If you're not a fan of this music, then your average TV viewer would probably never catch it. Anyone else hear it?
  17. Yeah I have one cd by Louis Moholo on Ogun. Amazingly, I found it in a dollar bin at Half Price Books! Its Moholo's Viva Le Black titled 'Exile'. Quite a good album (and nice packaging by Ogun-they were made in England). Along with the other one I have by Moholo, 'Tern' originally on FMP but reissued on UMS, is yet another great album. Would've been nice if FMP could've reissued the cd, as the book is really flemsy-but these are tiny qiubbles-I'm just glad its out on cd.
  18. Big semi-final matches coming up tomorrow: Federer v Davydanko; Nadal v Djokovic. Favorites have to be seeds 1 and 2 for yet another run for Federer to capture the one title that still eludes him. Have to give the nod to Henin on Saturday for her 3rd French Open Title.
  19. Apparently after 5 days, she's been released. Glad to see justice has been served Edit: Wups, I guess this belongs in the Paris in the Big House thread. My bad.

    Funny Rat

Sorry I'm a day late and a dollar short to comb through 500 pages of this Hysterical Mouse thread, but which Clusone 3 disk did you pick up? I have Soft Light and Sweet Music, and like that one quite a bit. I should add that I'm not familiar with the other Clusone titles-is it the Rara Avis one?

    Machine Gun

So at Half Price, I was combing through their dollar bin and found two cd's by Machine Gun on the MU Works label: Machine Gun and Open Fire. What really makes it interesting is that Sonny Sharrock is on both of them and Karl Berger is on the self-titled one. Apparently, the group got their name from Brotz' album Machine Gun and the music kinda has that vibe, although the line up is completely different in structure. The music kind of reminds me of a mix between Black Flag and John Zorn. Pretty wild stuff at times. Anyone heard of these guys? Have their cd's? Like them?
