  1. With a line-up of Dave Burrell, William Parker and Sunny Murray, this is the best they can do with the cover art? When I first saw this CD, I almost made the mistake of thinking that it was some cheesy beach party album. Good thing I looked at twice and bought it because its actually really really good.
  2. WTF??? Who the Hell is that, Paul Whiteman? Not Whiteman. It's Johnny Richards! Did they mix up their Johnnys? What's with the bathrobe, I wonder. the remarkable photograph draws the attention first... but: (Question to the native English speakers) Does the album title make any sense? I'm dumbfounded It seems like this album cover went wrong from the get-go.
  3. I'd also like to put a word in for the Freddie Hubbard/Woody Shaw sessions that came out on Blue Note, I think around the mid-eighties as 'The Eternal Triangle' and 'Double Take'. I have both sessions on a double cd that was issued in 1995, but unfortunately both the single discs and the double cd set are oop. If you find any of them used at a decent price (the 2cd set has gone for some pretty insane prices), I'd scoop 'em up; you won't be disapointed. p.s. Shaw's also on Hill's Passing Ships along with Dizzy Reece, another excellent place to hear some late 60's Shaw (and Reece for that matter).
  4. For Jackie's more 'out' sessions, you're probably thinking of 'Bout Soul which was recorded just a couple of months before Demon's Dance, but I wouldn't avoid it because there's some more great Woody Shaw on it. He plays on all but one track (Dear Nick, Dear John?) I can see the point about Demon's Dance being a 'step backwards'. That's not to say that its not a great record, just not as out.
  5. weird, seems like he really did both, or am I seeing something wrong (or did they mirror all those images...) Maybe he was ambidextrous.
  6. Just spun Changes again today, and I'm liking it more and more. This is a very worthy and valuable release. I think the title's appropriate because it reminds me of Compulsion!!!!! on the one hand, and a subtle hint towards Grass Roots on the other hand. Nice balance. I really like Sam Rivers on this one. A word too, for Booker and Moses. I think they do an outstanding job backing Hill, which is no easy task. No one's picked up the Foster huh?
  7. There can really be no excuse for this abomination. Ugly, incongruous... and back to front! This is a pet peeve of mine. I mean, WTF, it isn't as if the album in question was obscure!! You could make a good case for this being the most famous jazz album of all time, and they can't be bothered to dig up the original cover? The corporate love for jazz boggles the mind. I did not know that miles could play left-handed
  8. However, I just noticed that at CD Now, Simmons' Burning Spirits is OOP!
  9. This is indeed a classic; if it had been on BN it would be mentioned a lot more often. Guy Well luckily its still available and at mid-price....at least for now.
  10. I agree with that. This was always my least played session from the Mosaic, too. It just doesn't hang together very well, at least not to my ears. Picked up Change last night, and I really like it. Its kinda neat to hear Walter Booker in a more free-ish setting (especially on track one) then say on Mobley's Third Season (where I remember him best). JC Moses is a favorite (love his contribution on Dolphy's Ill. Concert). And I think Sam and Andrew mesh well. I'm also a huge fan of Compulsion!! and if I had to choose, Compulsion would get the nod, but not by much. I really want to get the Foster next. Anyone pick that one up yet?
  11. One reason to pick up the Grachan Moncur III Mosaic Select set. Albums included: ONE STEP BEYOND DESTINATION OUT EVOLUTION SOME OTHER STUFF HIPNOSIS 'BOUT SOUL ... of course Bobby is on 1/2 of these. BTW, "Action!" is in the (long OOP) Jackie McLean Mosaic box. Good call. Hipnosis would be a sweet Conn, then I wouldn't have to buy this set just for that session
  12. Yup. -_- And I think this will become more evident as time goes by.
  13. I like your sideman list too, and agree that I like Hutch on all of the disks that you've mention. Have you checked out Hutch with McLean? Destination...Out! and One Step Beyond are killer disks. These are Jackie's pianoless albums w/ GM III on board as well. Action! recorded a year or so later is another favorite. Love the first two tracks. Out of these, One Step Beyond will be the hard one to track down, but its well worth it. Don't know if we'll ever see an RVG of this one, at least domestically.
  14. I think The Kicker is still in print.
  15. Same goes for Pete Sampras-never won the French-and with 14 grand slam titles, he's also great. edited to take out that 'I'm with Dan' quote. It didn't make sense with my response.
  16. Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to pass on it, and wait for some of the other albums you guys mentioned to come around.
  17. I think I read somewhere (don't know where) that the cover photo was an attempt to 'soften' Hill's image. As soon as you play that record though, there's no easy listening there!
  18. Don Cherry's Where is Brooklyn? I still can't find Brooklyn in the cover. If BN would've released this one in the same time span as the other two, we could've had a kick ass Reid Miles cover instead.
  19. It's done pretty decently on the hats, not really advertising, rather just saying thanks and having the small logo there - FBI warnings on US disks are far more annoying and are kind of an advertisment, too, aren't they? Also they suggest me, the paying customer, being a guilty criminal really... As for the cover discussion, I think the current layout is by far the best. It's difficult to find older covers online, but the preceeding one was this: Here's an example of an earlier one: I can't find any of the earlier ones right now - didn't like the stamp ones at all, btw... That's the cover on my Braxton CD. The Clusone Three one I have (Soft Lights and Sweet Music) is in the style of the two top covers, but its an earlier issue on Hat Hut (the red spine with the little hat at the bottom). Maybe there was a transition there. I do like the Hatology issue of the Ayler over the older Hat Hat though-you can see the band pic in much better detail.
  20. I absolutely love the music on this one, but I still have trouble enjoying the cover of Cherry's Where is Brooklyn? I guess I have the same issue with the cover of McLean's Demon's Dance. Again, one of my favorite McLean's.
  21. Many of them aren't. HatHut has gone through many design schticks over the years. The Ra gets a new look every times it's reissued. Dark Tree was never on LP, IIRC. Thanks. I didn't know that about the Tapscott disks. I guess I'm really curious about the LP covers now, since some of you guys have been really crowin' about them. Any images/scans?
  22. you're lucky. Plectrist is a very good album. at least i enjoy it a lot. and i'm surprised it hasn't been reissued more often. from the other VEEs i have (and remember at this moment) i don't enjoy the Louie Bellson so much and i quite like Illinois Jaquet & Ben Webster's The Kid and the Brute, though it's one of those typical Granz jam sessions. I just found Plectrist used last night at half Price for $7.50!!!!!! The cover is a little ratty but the disk is perfect. And yes, what a great album. Now, I have TWO VEE's. The other (and after reading some of the posts about the Lone Hill dilemma, glad its the VEE) being the 'Introducing Jimmy Cleveland' set. Another great one.
  23. Saw this used last night, and since I don' have any Blythe in my possession I was wondering if this would be a good place to start. The Penguin guide pretty much slammed this one (1st edition) but I don't always agree with what Penguin has to say (Bill Dixon's Thoughts being one of those instances). It looks like its OOP and I can get it for $6. Is Penguin wrong? Is this a good place to start (I read that the India Navigations are excellent)?
  24. Found used yesterday: Billy Bauer-Plectrist Steve Lacy/Mal Wladron-Hot House All for under $13
