Fantasy and the Concord Takeover
AfricaBrass replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I agree with you, AfricaBrass. There's something sacred about going out to the store (nowadays an online store), digging through the selection, and purchasing an actual product. I like having the jewel cases on display, and looking at the artwork/photos and reading the linear notes. Its a ritual for me. Now, downloading tracks and printing out copies of the album art and notes may be the only way to preserve the material, and I respect that. But I don't like it. I'm also worried about long term storage. I don't really like the idea of paying similar prices for audio that has already taken a sound quality hit (mp3) and then having to make sure I have it archived. I think the dollar a song model is crazy. Maybe it's okay for an album with four 12 minute tracks, but an album with 15-20 tracks is a rip-off if downloaded. Then, on top of that, I have to provide the ink, paper, time, jewel case, so I can have a cd. The future is bleak if this is how it's going to be, but I can't see it going this way. People won't buy it. I won't. Either the prices will be much lower or there will be some other value added. -

Yeah, but cutouts don't necessarily mean deletions. For those who want actual CDs, I'd recommend buying just about everything - OJCs, BNs, Verves, not to mention the indie labels - now rather than later as the future of catalog distribution will very likely be digital downloads (only?) - or perhaps CDRs-on-demand. At some point we have to face the fact that if some of the more obscure artists and albums are only selling a few hundred copies each year, it's not gonna make any financial sense for a label to launch a traditional CD release for them. In some ways I welcome such on-line/digital distribution since it may be the only way to get the really rare and/or obscure stuff out there. That said, I'm not sure if we should start panicking over the Fantasy-Concord deal just yet. The above article suggests that Dorn pilaged the Muse catalog for sappy theme albums, but while that's true he also re-released a lot of stuff on Label M (or whatever it was called then) - and those releases may not have been possible without all the "Jazz on a Drizzly Sunday Morning" profits. If someone at Concord knows how to maximize profits, gain wider exposure for the music, and keep the back catalog intact - more power to them. I know you're right, RDK. How do you guys feel about the idea of digital downloads instead of an actual product? I for one, hate it. -

The more I think about it... Maybe I should be stocking up on the OCJ's. Is it possible, if the money people need to raise cash fast, they could sell off all the stock and flood the market with cutouts? As much as I like cheap cds; this would be really sad. -
That's great! Thanks for posting that Maren!

After reading the Allmusic review, I was afraid my memory had deceived me. Thanks for the review! I'm glad I'm not alone in my liking of that album. Yeah, Che... You've entered a place that can help you spend a LOT of money.

HAPPY LOVE DAY!!! I figure if the Mad Hatter can have 364 un-birthdays then there's no reason not to continue this one. -
You're welcome, Che. I don't know if anyone else shares the same a opinion, but I thought Blue Note in 1999-2000 was at a peak. You had Osby, Moran, Mark Shim, Stefon Harris, plus stalwarts like Lovano. I enjoyed an album that had Osby, Moran, Harris, Shim called New Directions. The All Music review is negative, but I remember liking it. This might be something cool to pick up used.

Thanks for the information, seems that some people do want to discuss Osby again. I did put his name in the search and got nothing. But I am still new to this forum. Thanks again. Che. I like Osby too. I haven't picked up the newest one, but I've got all the Blue Notes. I like all his albums from Art Forum on. Che, have you heard Jason Moran yet? He worked with Osby for a time and is also signed to Blue Note. I really like what he's doing. Africabass. I came across his name when I was looking up some background information on Osby, and he plays on the album I have, do you have a recomendation that I could try and get hold of? Thanks Che. Che, I've liked all of Moran's Blue Notes. I really liked his first album, Soundtrack to Human Motion. His album, Black Stars, had Sam Rivers on it (if you're a Rivers fan). His new album, Same Mother is interesting. We have a thread going about this album. I seem to remember he had mp3s on his website. You can sample his albums there. http://www.jasonmoran.com/mp3.html That reminds me, Greg Osby has a bunch of mp3s on his site. http://www.gregosby.com/mp3.html

I'm really tired of buying the same stuff over and over and over and over and over again. -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Big Al!!! I hope you have the best birthday yet. You deserve it!

You should have typed that post in all CAPS. Why? Is the small non-cap print hard to read with 36 year old eyes? That's even funnier. If I could only find my cane... I'd clobber ya'.

R.I.P. Thank you for your good work! -
Jack Benny's age is a good one. Now that I'm here, I understand why Jack Benny liked 39. I'm gaining on you. I'm 36 and I like this age. I just wish I knew what I know now when I was 25. I bet I'll be saying the same thing in 10 years about my mid-30's.
