  1. The category title makes complete sense to me... am wondering if they've eliminated some other categories (like best polka album) and tried to consolidate them under this moniker? It certainly is an awfully big umbrella; probably too much so. (Especially ironic given that 3 of the nominated artists/groups are from Louisiana...)
  2. Hmm... Nicholas Payton's rant reminds me a lot of Kenny Drew Jr.'s rant (a few years back) on another board. It's as if both of them wrote these things late at night and didn't edit them very well.
  3. That would be nice - I'm still a bit dizzy from watching the UK adaptations of Kate Atkinson's 1st 3 mystery novels. While I liked them, 2-3 episodes per book would have worked better, I think. I guess my age is showing. Foyle's War is much more my speed.
  4. I See Your Face Before Me Let's Face the Music and Dance (Fred Astaire debuted this one, I think) Nancy with the Laughing Face The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Ewan MacColl, Roberta Flack etc.) Funny Face (Gershwins - Astaire sang this one, too) Next word: WALK
  5. The show is Paint Your Wagon.
  6. Dream (Everly Brothers) You Stepped Out of a Dream (lotsa folks) Dream in Blue (Los Lobos) Last Night I had the Strangest Dream (again, many people) Dreamsville (H. Mancini; many artists) Next word: WIND
  7. I'm in. A download works!
  8. I've had no trouble with CD Universe, though I don't order from them often. It seems as if they have better connections for distribution of titles from Europe and S. America - and, sometimes, better prices than Amazon. It pays to shop around!
  9. That statement from The Second Mile really rankles. It's so very frustrating to be here and not be able to do anything... also knowing that there are people who would happily die for PSU's football team. Which is just. so. wrong. * Edited to add: McQueary will not attend Nebraska game due to threats. It sounds like State College and University Park (the campus) are crawling with cops - state troopers, helicopters, the works. I am honestly surprised that the National Guard hasn't been called up - yet.
  10. I think its almost impossible to imagine what it would be like to have been in McQueary's shoes at the time he saw the assault. * for anyone who's interested, Tom Corbett (gov. of PA and former State Attorney General - on the Sandusky case for 2 years) will be speaking in a few minutes. You can watch his press conference here: http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/livenow?id=8427072
  11. Not quite... the PA State Attorney General who is prosecuting the Sandusky abuse case is a woman. (Though I should note that Tom Corbett - now governor - was the original State Attorney General on the case.) McQueary, Curley and Schultz should all have been fired last night, too - the fact that that didn't happen says a great deal to validate what you've just said about King Football, testosterone, etc. As for the students who rioted, they rioted earlier this year, after the announcement of Osama Bin Laden's death. There was no news coverage of the candlelight vigils and quiet demonstrations that took place on campus last night; only of the rioters. So the picture is a bit skewed. But... are we disgusted here? hell yes.
  12. Or you could all read the actual statute. Legal counsel for Curley, Schultz and Paterno are using a loophole to get by. Just. not. acceptable.
  13. They should be coming in, specifically on an investigation of violations of the Clery Act: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/11/08/142146941/congressman-calls-for-federal-investigation-into-penn-state-scandal About the shredding (and hard drive wipes, I'm sure): I know. Wish there was some way it could be stopped. Re. 2007 commencement speech: yes, it's mentioned in my last. His most recent football camp was in 2009, at the Behrend campus (PSU) in Erie. * The loopholes in the Child Protective Services law (and other things) - op-ed from the Harrisburg (PA) Patriot Includes a proposal to amend the law.
  14. Pennsylvania § 42.42. Suspected child abuse—mandated reporting requirements. http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/049/chapter42/s42.42.html As they note, there is a 24-hour hotline. It looks like whoever was told (at Penn State, more than once) failed to comply with the minimum requirements of the law re. the timeframe of reporting suspected(or actual) child abuse; further, that standards of reporting were not met. * The questions of bribery, payoffs, threats.... they're all a realistic part of the scenario regarding Sandusky, the Penn State athletic department and relevant admins., The Second Mile, local police departments, etc. etc. etc. A great many people seem to have kept their mouths shut over a long period of time. Meanwhile, Sandusky was asked to give a commencement speech on the University Park campus as recently as 2007. (See centredaily.com, pennlive.com, onwardstate.com, statecollege.com and the Daily Collegian's site + Twitter feeds for details and more coverage.)
  15. I'd rather not engage in further discussion with you on this topic. best, s.
  16. NOBODY CALLED THE COPS WHEN MCQUEARY ACTUALLY SAW SANDUSKY RAPING A 10 YEAR-OLD KID. [caps are for emphasis; not yelling] It's that simple. See this: http://www.philly.com/philly/news/133435418.html?cmpid=15585797 * And this (awfully late in coming, though): taken from the liveblog at ONwardState - http://onwardstate.com/2011/11/08/live-blog-penn-state-charges-sandusky-scandal/
  17. Sorry, that doesn't make any sense at all. I think you misunderstand something: failure to report child abuse (of any kind) is, in itself, a crime. Paterno's good guy image just went down the toilet because of his complete moral and ethical FAIL on this. But, as JETman and Leeway have said, this is only the beginning of what will (imo) prove to be a far uglier - and more pervasive - problem. I am certain that Sandusky's "charity," The Second Mile, is going to be the subject of a great deal of scrutiny and attention, if only that had been true from 1977 on (when he started it). His known victims were primarily Second Mile kids. Saying "I reported it to my superiors" sounds suspiciously like "I was just following orders." [cue cilip of Pilate washing his hands]
  18. I've done the same with my Philips and haven't had any problems with compatibility since...
  19. Because of g'damned football team loyalty, most likely - and McQueary's (grad assistant witness) job on the line (guessing). And maybe shock as well. Sorry, I'm just furious at all of this - need to take a breather!
  20. PhillyQ - *and* blow the whistle on Second Mile, to try to stop Sandusky from having any further contact with kids - after all, he is a pedophile and repeat offender. The sad thing: a lot of people are refusing to believe that Sandusky, Paterno etc. did anything wrong. They're those nice guys who blend in with the rest of the community and even (in Paterno's case) have listed phone numbers with their street address included. Just regular "Humble Joe" types. [/sarcasm] Yes, I've been dragged to Beaver Stadium many a time! You mean you don't like posh tailgate parties?!
  21. Sounds like your reaction to it is very similar to mine...
  22. JETman - true. He's a deity around here - have you seen the JoePa "shrine" outside Beaver Stadium? (The statue of him where people love to pose for pics.) It might be in everyone's best interest to shut down the football team for a while. I know that will probably sound ridiculous to some, but it could send a message re. zero tolerance. (And kids can get football scholarships at other schools.) I'd love to see the football program go down to the level of the Temple Owls (a longtime opponent) and put the emphasis squarely on education, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.
  23. Report it to the cops immediately (and not just the campus cops), because it was a criminal matter - a 10 year-old kid was being raped by Sandusky. Get medical care and counseling for the kid who was victimized and abused. Failure to do these things: sorry, the man should be under investigation for what he didn't do. The minimal response might be legal, but ethical?! Responsible?! Compassionate?! It's just like the good old boy network in the Roman Catholic church re. protection of priests who continue(d) to abuse kids. I could make a short list of the other things he should have done, but plenty of columnists and commenters (elsewhere) have already done that.
  24. Check the Daily Collegian - its Twitter feed especially (http://www.collegian.psu.edu/ ) Scott Paterno reported 45 minutes ago that the NYT story about his father leaving is false. I wonder...
