sickening penn state football allegations
seeline replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You can read the entire grand jury report on pennlive.com; there's also lots of coverage at centredaily.com (site for the local newspaper in State College). The phony "charity" that Sandusky set up has been heavily promoted throughout central PA for many years - there were/are fund drives and collection tins in restaurants and other public places. And now - to know that it was a front for him to troll for victims. This is sickening beyond words. The grad student whose eyewitness report was ignored for 10 years ... that is literally criminal, in many senses. Graham Spanier knew about this stuff and covered it up. (He makes a big deal out of his approachability; hosts a couple of TV and radio shows focused on public welfare and education that are pretty much geared to giving him a Mr. Wonderful image.) imo, he and all the athletic department staff who were in on it should be thrown in the slammer. For decades, Joe Paterno (and university PR) have presented a very clean-cut image of the team - kids have to attend classes, get good grades, etc. or they can't play. It really makes me angry to think that all the time, there was truly sordid stuff going on and nobody had the guts to blow the whistle on Sandusky and his cohorts, let alone do anything to help those kids! -
Tk 11 - the only reason I was able to nail it was Howard levy's playing. As for the rest, well... win a few, lose a few!

Tk 11: That sounds like Howard Levy playing harp... My money is on this album. Tk 15: definitely sounds like the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, but they don't normally work with a bassist. Hmm...

Am listening through to this and really enjoying the music, Ptah! A few thoughts - Tk 4: that sounds like a bluegrass fiddler - Darol Anger, maybe? Stuck on the guitarist... but by any chance, is this the title track from an album? tk 9: Sahib Shihab is (maybe) one of the soloists? (Just a wild guess). It's got a wonderful groove - instrumentation reminds me a lot of Birth of the Cool. (Is that "rechanneled [sp?] stereo," by any chance?) Tk 10: could this be the Hypnotic Brass with some guests? Or possibly the Youngblood Brass Band? (Ditto.) Tk 16: the instrumentation reminds me of Ralph Peterson's Fo'tet recordings from the late 80s-very early 90s. (Sigh... he's gone so mainstream since then.)

Amazon.com often has good prices on Fremeaux sets and individual discs... ditto for CD Universe. I think shopping around is a good idea, since there seems to be quite a bit of variance in the markup/list price(s). They offer some pretty amazing - and very hard to find - material from Brazil, Cuba and the French-speaking Caribbean.

I'm in - download preferred.

Low tech can be deceptive... for example, many W. African drums now use high-quality, non-stretch marine and/or rappelling [sp?] line for lacing and tuning. A lot of Africans have adopted this tech.

He's been doing some great work, but it's quite different than the records that you like, for the most part. See the opening post for some more info.

I get what you guys are saying (just bought it from emusic last evening), but... A.A. is right about the harmonies in Chico Buarque's songs. And I am a big fan of Guinga's work, though I wish A.A. had chosen at least one of his medium-tempo pieces. That said, if you know the "songs" (meaning: pieces originally debuted as such, not as instrumentals) this is going to be a very rewarding listen (imo). But you're right - it's quiet and reflective, which is (again, imo) a characteristic of both Buarque's and Guinga's work.

MG was a pleasure to meet and entertain in my home. It was even fun to haul him around town a little on the back of my motorcycle. He's a brave man! I really think he's one of the finest music fans I've ever met and I hope he can return to this conversation soon. I miss him and his many contributions, too. Must have been a wonderful visit, j!

I envy your getting to work with Donal Fox - having both these guys in the same workshop must have been great. btw, I like Murray's Ballads for Bass Clarinet - though, like you, I feel that a lot of his work is a "miss." (Might be partly because he's made so many recordings.)

Los Hermanos Castro Do The Brazil 66 Thing Better Than Brazil 66!&

Funny thing; when I watched the vid on the other thread, I thought they sounded like a Brazilian vocal group! Here's one of Os Cariocas' versions of Samba de uma nota só (One-Note Samba) - -
The thing about that poem is that Cheevy is an alcoholic... http://www.poemtree.com/poems/MiniverCheevy.htm I like the stanza about the Medici.

Microtonal Works by Cage and Beardsley and POSTCAGE: Radio Broadcasts

Thanks so much for the links - very intriguing! Love your guitar! -
You might want to check out Cama de Gato, from Rio. Unfortunately, their discs are pretty hard to find.
-
you can try Google Translate or Babelfish, which will mangle text to varying degrees, but you really don't need it for the list of his recordings. He was a member of the Portela samba school (in Rio) and seems to have made a bunch of samba recordings. http://www.dicionariompb.com.br/noite-ilustrada http://www.allbrazilianmusic.com/artistas/ver/noite-ilustrada

My views on why "swarming" is a bad idea were stated much earlier in this thread. No offense, but I think I want to get off the bus right here... no sense rehashing things.

Ptah, I was responding to a post where conflict of interest in another review situation (on Goodreads.com) was discussed. That's all. and this, from Jsngry
-
The negative review was poorly written, but the guy has a right to his pov. If you folks had held off for a while instead of posting all at once... But what's done is done; I think this thread has been going in circles for a while.
-
According to some posters who wrote earlier in this now-long thread, amazon.com has pulled reviews due to conflict of interest in the past.
-
you put it more clearly than I did earlier in the thread. Thanks!

I think you enjoy stirring the pot. Disagreement doesn't = hostility in my book, but you seem to feel obligated to diss people who entertain different views than yours.
