    Oscar Aleman

Oscar Aleman ( 1909 - 1980 ) On October 14th, Oscar Aleman, the great Argentine jazz gitarist, died 26 years ago. This great guitar player was in Europe and the US a mythical figure for years. In the 1930s he was one of the best guitar players in Europe and could match even Django. A lot of people even found him swing more then Django. Django admired him and they became friends. After 1940 Oscar moved to South America and but few people followed his carreer. He became one of the greatest Argentine stars in the 1950s. Now, in 2006, his musical heritage is described in an extensive discography ( also in book form) and research is done by an enthusiast group of Dutch - Danish - Argentine admirers (The Alemaniacs) in what is called the El Redescubrimiento de Oscar Aleman project. A special web log is dedicated to Oscar Aleman ( Oscar Aleman web log ). In its menu you'll find links to other interesting sites. Hans Koert Oscar Aleman Discography Keep swinging
  3. Rose Road - City Lines - Douwe Eisenga Douwe Eisenga is a composer who is described as a cross-over figure. His music is difficult to label, but contains elements from pop and jazz combined with other music styles. Keep swinging Durium
  4. Take Five is one of those all-times classics related to Dave Brubeck. His recording of Take Five in 1959 for Columbia on the Time Out album became a million seller. It inspired numerous other musicians to play this strange piece of music in 5/4 measure. I found nine Take Five's for you on MyTube to illustrate what has happened with Brubeck's tune. 5. Paquito d' Rivera - Tico Tico This album dates from the late 1980s, but it still sounds fresh and lively. It was Paquito's first album for Chesky. Paquito d'Rivera wants to show the roots of South American music and the album has some great tracks like the title song Tico Tico and the small Venezuelan tunes with Tiberio Nascimiento on guitar. 6. The Finnish documentary filmer Miki Kaurismäki made a great contribution to the Brazil musical traditions. He documented the roots of the Brazilian music, like the samba, in the northeastern part of Brazil and in Rio the Janeiro in his film Moro No Brasil As passioned by the Choro music I missed this subject in this 2002 film, but, experts know, that Miki made a great film about choro with his documentary Brasileirinho he released last year. If you like Brazil and its music, don't miss this one. Keep swinging Durium
  7. Jazz Kat, which Sonny is your favorite? You appear to be very thoughtful about these things, and I am very curious. g I agree that my first impression of the CD was less then I expected. I think it has been overrated in some cases. I liked the Ralph Gleason fragment in the blog, although the film seems very corny and dated. There are more tracks of the Jazz Casuals film available. 8. SONNY ROLLINS - THE BRIDGE This LP was released after Rollins come back in the early 1960s. I love the track God Bless The Child. I found this tune played by the quartet in a MyTube clip from the Gleason Jazz Casuals show. A great fragment. Keep swinging Durium
  9. Some thoughts about the second CD: 1. Jean-Michel Pilc? 2. I don't like this kind of stuff. It's from the 1980s. It remembers me to music like Joe Zawinul and Miles Davis in his experimental period. 5. Flute. I don't like flute played this way. I like most of the other tracks, but I find it difficult to label the artist. I'm anxious to read the comments from my fellow listmates. Keep swinging Durium
  10. Thanks forb the great collection you'd send, Tom, but I find it difficult to label track with names and tunes. 1. I like this slap bass playing. It sounds like Milt Hinton or someone of the old masters. I don't recognize the vibe. a great opener. 2. First I thought of course this was Blues March - if so it is a pretty modern form/ 7. I like the accordeon player. They are scarce in modern jazz. I heard one lately in a TV program, but I forgot his name. Thanks so far. I'll study the CD this weekend again. Keepswinging Durium
  11. The Randal Corsen Group Muzik Antiyano performed at Porgy en Bess Jazzclub in Terneuzen (south west of the Netherlands). This group, which has its roots in the Netherlands Antilles brought a varied program of jazz, traditional songs and classical Antillian music. Randal Corsan is the great-great-grandchild of Joseph Sickman Corsen, a well known composer from the island of Curacao. Randal Corsen is a skilled musician, active in several jazz bands in the Netherlands like Bye-ya and the bigband Tumbabo. Keep swinging Durium
  12. Today Joergen from Denmark posted his 50th Choro web log, about the traditional jazz music of Brazil. As he is a very very modest person, he didn't tell everyone about it; he only wrote two small lines in his blog to mark this milestone. It would be nice if you visit his blog Choro Music blog and maybe you can write him a commend on that page. I'm sure he will be surprised and honored. Keep swinging Hans Koert Keep swinging Durium

  17. SVEND ASMUSSEN ET LIV I MUSIK A great documentary and music DVD about the life and musical career of the Danish jazz violin player and entertainer Svend Asmussen. It's a pity that the documentary is in Danish only without English subtitles, but the musical fragments and the nearly two hours part with concerts makes it worth to think about obtaining this great DVD. 19. You all heard from the Young Lions ...... we have our Dutch Jazz Cats. Ten years ago the Young Dutch Jazz Cats were recorded. Some of the musicans, like Jesse van Ruller and Peter Beets are now international estimated musicans. Most of the other young cats are still active musicians in The Netherlands. This CD is a great document !! Keep swinging Durium

  22. De Brazilian guitar player Gaston Bueno Lobo made several recordings with Oscar Aleman late 1920s They called their duo Les Loups ( = Los Lobos). Around 1930 they travelled through Europe. In 1931 Oscar Aleman was asked to join Josephine Baker's Baker Boys in Paris and Gaston Bueno Lobo leaves frustrated to Brazil. Sources say he commited suicide, but Jørgen Larsen found out that he made recordings late 1930s with Laurindo Almeida. Gaston Bueno Lobo: Help needed. Keep swinging
  23. You're right, Shearn, it's not as hidden as I described in my blog. The CD contains 7 (seven) items. The seventh title "blues" is written on the "label" ( I guess you understand what I mean with the label as I'm talking about a CD !!), but NOT in the liner notes of the CD nor in the track list on the back. So, the seventh track is NOT in the information book and track list, but it is printed on the label !! Sorry !! Keep swinging Durium
  24. In the item Where Are You Listening To Now of this forum Paul Secor tells about an experience he had while playing the Charles Mingus CD: Pre-Bird (Mercury/Verve) - I guess I'd always shut this off when the music on "Half-Mast Inhibition" ended. I'd compared the timings with the old Mingus Revisited CD, and "Half-Mast Inhibition" on PreBird runs about a minute longer, although the music seems to be the same. This listen, I let "Half-Mast" play out, and after a silence, there's about 45 seconds of control booth/studio talk and a snippet of Lorraine Cousins singing "Weird Nightmare" - perhaps one of the edits in the released form of that track. The edits are displayed after the track listing as each track plays, which is interesting. I had te same experiences with the Verve CD Baby Breeze from Chet Baker. When the last track Think Beautiful has finished ( 4: 18) the CD seems to have been ended. If you don't stop it or change the CD at once because you love to finish the article in the news paper you're reading, studio noises and music starts again after one minute. These hidden tracks were added by Verve in some releases. These bonus tracks have all turned up at the end of the compact disc in question, not mentioned in the insert sleeve-notes, on the tray card, or listed in the track. Thanks to some recent articles some tracks could be traced. Hidden tracks Keep swinging Durium
  25. I don't recognize much for this secopnd CD too. Some thoughts: 3. The sound reminds me to Earl Bostic. 6. Moanin' 7. The hammond player might be Jimmy Smith and I recognize the guitar player, but don't know who it is now !! 11. An ellington like tune, but not his band. Keep swinging Durium
