    Lonnie Johnson

LONNIE JOHNSON's Uncle Ned Don't Use Your Head This tune with its strange title was recorded 75 years ago, in New York on the 3rd of December 1931. It was recorded by one of my favorite blues guitar players, Lonnie Johnson, who became famous with his duets with Eddie Lang (as Blind Willie Dunn) recorded during the late 1920s. As I don't know the deeper meaning of this tune ( and I'm a young guy who wants to learn all kind of new things) maybe someone can explain me why fish without bread makes sick. Keep swinging Durium
  2. I looked at the track list of the 2LP as I found it on internet and found out that the playing time of the three tunes ( starting with the Hey Jude) was equal in length to the visible bands on the metal disc. And as I said, the first item was Hey Jude, I could play the tune on the metal disc. Thanks to a record collector who had the 2LP I reveived as copy of it on CDR. Isn 't it a remarkable story? 3. DON ELLIS AT FILLMORE In each collection there are records with a story. How did you found it? Where did you found it? Why did you bought it. I have such a remarkable story with Don Ellis' recording Don Ellis at Fillmore I love to share with you. I posted the story about how I found it at my web log. Hope you like it. Keep swinging Durium

    Piet Noordijk

He is a great alto player although it seems his fame is only limited to The Netherlands (and some places in Texas ) I guess. It's a shame Keep swinging Durium
  5. yup, you may like your Tunisia, but Tunisia will forget about you by next year. That's where Deelder's story is about ........... Keep swinging Durium

    Piet Noordijk

PIET NOORDIJK Piet Noordijk, alto saxophonist, is one of the best European alto saxophone players, maybe even the best. He is a follower and a great fan of Charlie Parker. His recording Piet Plays Bird was a remarkable project in which he remade the Charlie Parker with String recordings. He has been the leading alto-saxophonist in the Dutch Metropole Orchestra for years and is now retired, although still very active. His last project is called Pete's Groove in which he plays the soul music of Cannonball Adderley. Some recordings: Piet Plays Bird (1997) Piet Noordijk quartet - Live ( 1988) Pete's Groove ( 2003) You can find more info in my Keep swinging web log. Keep swinging Durium
  7. I agree with Al. Well I don't. There are so many versions of this tune. . . this is not one of my favorite ones. But . . . you go guys! I don't either. I love the 'Jazz at Massey Hall' version, and the Art Blakey version on Blue Note, off the top of my head. The Dutch novelist and jazz authority Jules Deelder, who made some great jazz record compilations ( Deelder Draait, Deelder Draait Door, Deelder Blijft Draaien and his last one Deelderhythm) wrote a story titled Nacht in Tunesië. So open your Dutch languages courses and learn that this story has nothing to do with the tune. Keep swinging Durium
  8. and Coltrane's Blue Note fits in between those two recording dates and ......... Jimmy Smith Septet, featuring Lee Morgan too ( the same date as City Lights) ( 25 Aug) Keep swinging Durium
  9. That was some of the earliest Lee Morgan I ever heard. On the 70s blue label LP 'Lee Morgan Memorial Album' (a fabulous introduction to his Blue Notes, in itself). 'The Cooker' retains its freshness, to this day.. As I wrote in my web log I also have City Lights, recorded a month before The Cooker. Keep swinging durium
  10. LEE MORGAN - The Cooker A great Blue Note RVG reissue of an album made by a 19th year old Lee Morgan. I liked his Just One Of Those Things version with Pepper Adams playing an imporant part. Keep swinging Durium

  12. Cover missing At a record fair I bought a Riverside LP 12-262 with Thelonious Monk Quartet titled Thelonious in Action. It's a pity that the cover is missing. Maybe (one never knows, do one?) someone has a cover WITHOUT the record. It is a great 1958 recording, featuring Johnny Griffin, live at the Five Spot Café in New York City. More about this album. 13. I was really impressed by his arrangements and, as you both mentined, the sound quality ( even in 2006) Keep swinging Durium
  14. BOB MINTZER BIG BAND The DMP CD The First Decade of Bob Mintzer Big Band has been released more then 10 years ago, but is still a remarkable productions containing tracks from the first 10 years of this great big band. I heard this CD for the first time and was impressed by the clear transparant sound of it, and I'm anxious to find more recordings of this great band. Suggestions welcome ! Keep swinging Durium
  15. DERWOOD BROWN Since I published my contribution to start this subject some things have been cleared. Durwood should be Derwood. - sorry 'bout that - it is wrong on the Charly LP cover. ]. Derwood Brown, Gary Ginell wrote me, wasn't a very good guitar player. He gives some commend in my Keep swinging web log Keep swinging Durium
  16. Thanks stereojack, I ordered the box today. i'm anxious to hear it !! Keep swinging Durium
  17. DURWOOD BROWN I played myself the great LP Milton Brown & The Brownies - Easy Ridin' Papa (Charly CR 30264) In 1933 Milton Brown left the Dough Boys and founded his Musical Brownies. One of the musicians was his brother Durwood who played the guitar. When I listen to the LP of Milton Brown's Brownies Bob Dunn's amplified slide guitar takes a lot of attention and I find it difficult to hear Durwood's guitar playing, that seems to have been pretty good. Can someone inform if there are other recordings of Durwood Brown so I can make myself an idea of his guitar playing? Keep swinging Durium

  21. ROBERT ALTMAN ( 1925-2006) Robert Altman passed away 20th of November 81 years old. He made a lot of films. For me Kansas City and the related documentary Jazz '34 are his most important. Although Kansas City didn't became a success in a financial way it had great jazz scenes with an all star band of musicians still active. In the film only fragments of these musicians performing are to be seen - in the documentary Jazz '34 Altman used the complete shots of Kansas City for this film. If you want know more about these films visit my web log Keep swinging Durium

  23. New Bottle, Old Wine The April - May 1958 session of Cannonball Adderley-Gil Evans, released as New Bottle, Old Wine was a great surprise for me. The fresh contemporary arrangements of Gil Evans and the use of the tuba on four tracks make this a great recording. A record to be found in every record collection!! Released as part of the Blue Note Gil Evans - The Complete Pacific Jazz Sessions Connoisseur record. Keep swinging Durium
  24. Thanks Glen. As I wrote in my web log, I remember that the Creative World LPs, were to expensive for me at that time. Everytime I see such an LP now a days I don't know if it is worth the money to buy it, although I can afford it now and they aren't even that expensive. Keep swinging Durium
  25. You're complete right, Neveronfriday. He is a master with the brushes and a genius in rhythm. I have enjoyed it very much. Keep swinging Durium
