Dear Dan, First of all thanks for the great compilation. I learned that several people have posted their thoughts about it. I'll share my thoughts about two tracks. 1. Very groovy and I thought it could be Jimmy McGriff atr the hammond. 6. I also believed Milt Jackson was at the vibes, but isn't there another one too? I'll post some thoughts about disc 2 later. The recording Ben op zijn best ( to be translated as Ben at his best) is one of my favorites. It was recorded in 1970 in Laren ( The Netherlands) with a Dutch line up, featuring Ray Kaart, Herman Schoonderwalt, Rudy Brink, Cees Slinger, Rob Langereis and John Engels. If you like the music of Ben you should try to find a copy of this LP. As far as I know it was never reissued on CD. Anxious to learn more about this record? Keep swinging durium

Conversations with Michel This CD contains an interview of Michel Petrucciani with the producer Ben Sidren for a 1988 radio program. For me this interview, although very informative, is a bit superfluous as it is printed entirely in the liner notes. The Conversations between Bob Malach on tenor sax and Michel Petrucciani on piano are great and make this CD worth to listen to. 1-2-3-10 My Bebop Tune 5. For All Time's Sake 6. Contradictions 7. My Baby Just Cares For Me This CD opens with recordings Stan Getz made for the rare “Sittin’ in with” label October 1948 (The CD info gives November). Half a year later he’s also present on some Al Haig’s Quintet recordings for the Seeco label. Getz, who had been one of the so called Four Brothers in Woody Herman’s band started his own groups and his name was raising in the polls. His Royal Roost recordings are known and belong to the best Getz made. It is great to listen here to other, less known tunes from the same period. Al Haig, was a skilled piano player, unknown to the general public. His exceptional technique gave him a flexibility and quickness of response that made him a fine accompanist to soloists as Stan Getz, Wardell Gray, Allen Eager and Herbie Steward, all on this CD. Haig is to be found on almost all recording on this compilation. Wardell Gray is on five tracks. Gray, influenced by Lester Young, had experimented with the modern music styles in Benny Goodman’s small groups. He became, like Haig, undervalued, due to the fact that he died a few years later before he could make a name for himself. Another remarkable sax player from this period is Allen Eager. He plays on this compilation in the bands of Red Rodney and Dave Lambert. Dave Lambert, one of the pioneers in bebop singing, became famous with his group Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. The final tracks of this CD have been reserved for Herbie Steward’s Royal Roost recordings from the early 1950s. Like Stan Getz Steward was discovered by Woody Herman while they were in Butch Stone’s band. They became part of the Second Herd. Getz was impressed by Herbie Steward’s sax playing: “Herbie’s got such beautiful soul. Even playing lead chair. His lead alto is the nearest thing to a human voice I’ve ever heard”. He said about him. I like the tune “Passport To Pimlico” very much, a great performance with contributions of Herbie Steward, Al Haig and Jimmy Raney. Audio Park has create a great second item in its series of Modern Stylists (The first one was the Audio Park 6102 “Modern Clarinet Stylists”) and I’m anxious to hear their next Modern Stylists release. I enjoyed the Thelonious Monk Quartet ( featuring John Coltrane) live recordings at the Five Spot Café in New York City 11 September 1958. These recordings are previous released by Blue Note (although wrong dated as summer 1957), but are now complete available and in the correct chronological order at Gambit Records. The Crisco commercial Goodbye Blues as sung by the Mills Brothers in 1932 is a well known Durium advertisement record. I got a link to the 1932 Max Fleischer Follow The Bouncing Ball cartoon, featuring the Mills Brothers singing I Ain't Got Nobody ( introducing that same Goodbye Blues) and I was fascinated by the similarities between the durium record and the first scene of the film. If you like you can enjoy this item at my Hit of the week blog spot Keep swinging Durium

A year ago I visited the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. I didn't visit the great concert halls with great names, but visited the small venues in the city. It gave me the opporunity to learn more about the Danish jazz scene that has a great name. Think about Jacob Fischer. Christina von Bülow, Putte Wickman en de groep Choro Brasil Scandinavia. I was very honoured to met the then 89 years old Danish entertainer and jazz violist Svend Asmussen Keep swinging Durium

Today ( June 29th, 2006), fifty years ago, Helen Merrill and the Orchestra of Gil Evans did record four tunes that became, together with four others made three days earlier, highlights in vocal jazz. If you have the opportunity to listen to these great standards, do so !! Keep swinging Durium
