  1. A friend recalls seeing him at the old Inferno Lounge on Proost Avenue here in Kansas City. Benson spent most of the first set railing against the emcee for introducing him as Cleanhead Benson.
  2. I've long enjoyed the Atlantic but have wondered about the other versions. Are some of the performances edited in the Atlantic editions? Seems to me I hear some splices (like at the beginning of Curson's solo on April, and a couple of other spots, but I'm not at home to check the disc right now). Do the other versions perhaps have a few more bars?
  3. And start looking for "Upper Manhattan Jazz Society" on Enja.
  4. Dude, I just downloaded them all from Wolfgang's Vault.
  5. There's been lots of talk over on the Steve Hoffman board. The general consensus is that the masterings are botched. For example, on Vol. 6, the stritch doesn't sound stritchy enough.
  6. peculation (embezzlement, misappropriation)
  7. Geri Allen, "Eyes in the Back of Your Head" a spot or two on Jamaaladeen Tacuma's Gramavision recordings
  8. You can have the lion's share of Tadd as leader on just a handful of CDs: -- the Fats Navarro disc you already have, where Tadd is really the leader -- half the Prestige Clifford Brown Memorial Album -- Fontainebleau -- Mating Call -- The Magic Touch There ain't a whole lot more, sadly. The Fats Navarro collections on Savoy are a nice supplement. Love his charts for Dizzy on RCA and Verve, and for Milt Jackson on Riverside too.
  9. Countess Greyscale Samantha (witch cat) "Greyscale" is a winner, Shawn!
  10. Just the one white spot? Then it's a cat named Spot.
  11. Which time? The Jones-Smith Inc. date? For me, probably the master take of Dameron's "Lady Bird."
  12. Thiele was cozy with BMG in the last couple of years of his life. But maybe he held on to ownership of his masters?
  13. Yeah, Signature deserves some serious attention. A teenager putting out 12-inch 78s of Hawk and Prez, for cryin' out loud! I wonder if the disc masters stayed with Bob Thiele. The far-from-comprehensive CDs he was releasing in the '80s sound like they might have been from tapes made in the '60s or '70s.
  14. Gee, I always wanted a mentor named Snake.
  15. OK, I'll bite. I still haven't heard a single stereo RVG that sounds better than the McMaster to my ear. The mono RVGs are fine, though.
  16. Does anybody know what kind of piano Atlantic had in the studio? Sounds like a really over-mic'd upright on most of the sessions. It bothers me more than any issues with the drums.
  17. In the '30s and into the '40s, U.S. Victor was selling many album sets in both "manual" and "automatic" configurations. The catalog numbers were the same, but the prefix letters were different.
  18. My first Andrew Hill was "Shades" on Soul Note. It's arguably the easiest to take of all his albums. But it ain't fluffy. And his solos provide a lot of information about his playing, if you know what I mean.
  19. Anybody share my feeling that the Savoy album sounds like Erroll Garner on acid?
  20. Adrian Leverkuhn Arnold Schoenberg Nikos Skalkottas
  21. No thanks on the DJ thing, Jim, but would you consider posting some of the old Jazz Trading Post graphics here for a new generation to enjoy? (I first encountered several of my friends on this board through the JTP.)
  22. Science Diet is waaaaay heavy on the gluten. Just one pellet was enough to cause my old 17-pound cat severe gastrointestinal inflammation. But no skin problem. Still, steer clear of the stuff.
  23. Kinuta's right. Change vets now. If there's a specialty cat clinic anywhere nearby, try them. Years ago, I got a cat through something similar by making her a sort of t-shirt from an old tube sock. Cut off the toe of the sock, cut two leg holes, and apply to cat (a two-person operation). That mysterious kitty injury, BTW, turned out to be a burn that probably came from sleeping next to a radiator.
