  1. TITLE: The Duck Yas-Yas-Yas MATRIX NO.: C-3485- SINGER: Tampa Red [with Georgia Tom Dorsey] COMPOSER(S): DATE OF REC.: 13 May 1929 ORIGINAL ISSUE(S): Vocalion 1277 REISSUE(S): Yazoo L-1039 TRANSCRIPTION: THE DUCK YAS-YAS-YAS by Tampa Red and Georgia Tom Dorsey Mama bought a rooster, she thought it was a duck. She brought him to the table with his legs straight up. In came the children with the cup and a glass, To catch the liquor from his yas yas yas. Babe, oh, babe, have you ever been to Spain? See those hoodoo women, shakin' that thing. They got rings on their fingers, bells on their toes. What they've got good, babe, nobody knows. I'm goin' down Market Street, Where the men and women all do meet. That's where the men do the Georgia Rub, Women fall in line with a big washtub. Me and my gal walkin' down the street. She caught the rheumatism in her feet. She stooped over to pick some grass, And the same thing struck her in the yas yas yas. You catch the train you call Forty-Nine, carries you down to Caroline. You catch the train you call Forty-Eight, Takes you right in to the Golden Gate. You shake your shoulders, you shake 'em fast. You can't your shoulders, shake your yas yas yas. Drink some rooster soup before going to bed. Wake up in the mornin', find your own self dead. Down on Morgan there's a good location, Right there next to a gasoline station. That's where you'll get your car's oil and grease. Women cryin', "Honey, won't you come in, please." I'm gonna sing this verse, ain't gonna sing no more. Somebody's knockin' on my door. The people upstairs have gone to bed. I'd better stop that noise 'fore they crack my head. TRANSCRIBED BY: Gorgen Antonsson (antonsson.se@mbox304.swipnet.se), 6 Feb 1995
  2. Down on the farm, they all ask...
  3. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin, "Pisces," at the local damaged-freight store because the jewel box was cracked. $3.99, sealed.
  4. I've got these, and I like them all: Art Blakey, A Day With Art Blakey, Vol. 1, FS-40042 Art Blakey, A Day With Art Blakey, Vol. 2, FS-40043 Joseph Jarman, Inheritance, FS-40060 Sonny Rollins, Without A Song, FS-40088 Tommy Flanagan, Master Trio, FS-40057
  5. Duuuude, you're supposed to BAKE it before you eat it...
  6. Wait a minute. This is a "Gilligan's Island" episode. Featuring Vito Scotti as a Japanese soldier.
  7. "Gallery," on Hallway Records. Available from hallwayrecords.com.
  8. It isn't the stereotypical BN date, because that's not the kind of player Johnny Coles was. If you've gotta have that slash-and-burn bravura, you won't find it here. But he has his own poetic intensity. I love his playing. Better start looking now for Coles' "The Warm Sound" on Epic, reissued on CD by Koch, and his "New Morning" on Criss Cross.
  9. No guarantee that Watson will be there Friday or Saturday; he has another commitment early Saturday. But who knows what will happen late? Bobby's is Everette's home club for the moment. He's there every Thursday, Friday and Saturday for a while.
  10. Houston will be in Kansas City tonight (May 20) and tomorrow, playing with organist Everette DeVan's group at Bobby's Hangout, 3611 Broadway. Two sets, about 9:30 and 11:30; $10 cover. I was there Thursday night. Some serious greaze was slung. Houston and Everette were both in blazing form, and Bobby Watson played most of the second set with them. Highly recommended to all. B-)
  11. Aha! Thanks for the clarification. Guess I'll pick up that set after all.
  12. Chuck, I read a rumor that this set was remastered from LPs rather than the tapes. (Of course I believe everything I read on the Internet.) Do the CDs sound OK to you?
  13. I was hoping to be able to link to their online catalog, but it's not working. The catalog number is 8.550749, the violinist is Gyorgy Pauk. While you're at it, might want to get the Naxos disc of the two violin concertos. There's some great solo piano music too -- the "Out of Doors" suite is cool beyond cool -- but I don't know of any recording in print that satisfies me. The Naxos might do until something better comes along.
  14. The two discs considered must-have classics by smartypantses like me are: -- The Concerto for Orchestra and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony on RCA -- and the three piano concertos by Geza Anda and Ferenc Fricsay on DG. Both should be pretty easy to get. The former was just reissued on SACD hybrid. From there, you'll need to expand into the string quartets. I recommend the Keller Quartet set on Erato above all, even the oft-recommended Emerson Quartet on DG. Also grab the disc of violin and piano sonatas on Naxos. Some of Bartok's least user-friendly music, but you can handle it.
  15. I was always partial to The Cramps' "Bad Music for Bad People" as best-titled album.
  16. I snagged the 45 on eBay a few months back. The label does say "Blues March" but attributes the tune to Carmell. It also says "From LP album PJ-29 THE REMARKABLE CARMELL JONES." I've been meaning to compare this side (2:43) to the "Sad March" on the LP, but don't have the time today. I've always secretly hoped this was a different take, but I doubt it. I'll report back.
  17. A quick plug here for Bob Nell's "Soft and Bronze." And a shameless plug for a friend's disc (but I get no kickback): Tim AuBuchon
  18. Eddie Durham Eddie Albert Arnold Ziffel
  19. But seriously, folks. Even "Booker Ervin Quintet" would be a better title. If it must be a pun, I nominate "The Overdue Book." (Adapting a suggestion from a previous post...)
  20. Gack for me too. How 'bout "Tex Book Depository"?
  21. It don't mean a hoot if it ain't got that suit.
  22. Potentially the best Organissimo poll question ever!
  23. So now the guy can't even write an obituary without turning it into an agenda-driven attack. And he kinda sorta forgot to say much of anything about Mr. Heath.
  24. I was having trouble deciding my gender. Turns out I'm male.
