  1. His music for large ensemble (something like that) on ECM is terrific. It is a double CD release that features some of his most haunting music. The musicians are almost all English with some exceptions. Also check out (ECM as well) Gnu High.
  2. Well, I finally concluded that my Ibanez 2630 was way too much guitar for the style I play, and since I needed new gear, I sold it. I found a very nice 2004 Takamine Model EAN15C in a local pawn shop. Solid top, back and - I think - sides. Got it out the door for $600. It listed new for near $1800, and I couldn't be happier. I never owned a solid top before. I was wanting a 00 or another narrow waist model instead of another dreadnought, but I couldn't pass this one by. The pic is from the factory site; the pic of mine is too large a file to post. Played through my Acoustisonic and a Boss AD3 pre, this guitar really comes to life.
  3. I spotted this just now on CL. $1900? Seems cheap. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/msg/1025655100.html
  4. Here is one on Ebay down here in Texas for $700. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/msg/1001611210.html
  5. I read here that authentic/vintage Leslies are very high priced. Does that apply to all the models they made? (many how that is, I have no idea). I saw this on Austin CL earlier. The organ is not a B3 but it has a Leslie and he wants $400 for it all. http://austin.craigslist.org/msg/963110610.html
  6. I just picked up a pair of JBL L-56 speakers. They were made only for three years in the early 80s. They were on sale at a local pawn shop (gotta love pawn shops!) for $35 for the pair. I talked them down to $30 out the door because one speaker's woofer needs refoaming (about a $50 job). Aside from the deteriorating foam, the speakers and cabs are in very good shape, including the screens. Any opinions on this model? My cousin bought a pair of L-100s new back in the day and they sounded terrific. I have been needing a pair of studio monitors, and have been told that these would suffice. I also wanted to replace the Bose 600s that I have had for sometime in my stereo system.
  7. In case someone is interested. I saw this on CL a second ago. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/msg/911171002.html
  8. I just purchased a 4 year old Takamine EA15N C (see link and pic). It is a cutaway dreadnaught with built in pickup and eq. Overall, this is a great guitar, especially for the price I paid. I don't own a dedicated acoustic amp (I hope to soon). My only gtr amp is a Roland JC 120. I run my Ibanez 2630 through it and it sounds great. What are the drawbacks of running a hollow body through a non-acoustic set up? Is it possible - or doable - to run it direct through my PA? Thanks! (from an acoustic kind of guy) http://www.takamine.com/?fa=detail&mid=1090&sid=352
  9. Pretty steep price, but there is a lot of stuff there! http://www.thegreatestmusiccollection.com/index.html http://www.jazzhouston.com/forum/messages....6&key=17541 Update: While googling, I learned that the collection has indeed been purchased (for just over 3 million dollars).
  10. I have the one on the right; anyone want to buy it?
  11. I can't seem to determine the exact model of this cartridge. It has the letters "TR" on the box (and the cartridge too I think). Does that help? I googled Grado TR cartridge with no luck. Greg
  12. I had no idea this had been on there since the beginning of the month. I just wish there were more.
  13. My pricing's a bit old. Grado Prestige Black now $60 retail; discount around $50 (see, for example, Amazon) Thanks !
  14. I spotted a Grado cartridge (in the wooden box with latch) in a local pawn shop today. I know very little about these except that they are high end and usually very high priced. I can't say what model it was, but the shell itself was wooden. They were asking $89. which means it could be had for probably less than $60. (cash talks in this place) Referencing their website catalog, even if it is the lowest priced wood shell cartridge, that one sells for $200, and of course they go way way higher. I will be calling there tomorrow to see if I can get more info. Assuming it is in good condition and doesn't need repair or a new needle (even so), would this be overkill for an average stereo setup? I have often times heard that the best place to gain significant improvement in the sound of LPs is the cartridge. (having a decent TT being a given)
  15. I have been wanting to get Dennis on a gig with me for awhile now, and we are finally getting the opportunity. I will be leading my quartet at Cezanne's in Houston on Sept 13th (Saturday). We play from around 9:30 to 1:30. http://www.jazzhouston.com/venues/about.jsp?key=7 If you haven't been to Cezanne's before, it is a very intimate, small venue; ideal for listening, and assholes who talk during sets usually don't come there. There really isn't a bad seat in the place, and the acoustics are great. The staff is very nice too. My group that night: Myself - trombone Dennis Dotson - tpt/flgh David Craig - ac. bass * Tim Solook - drums * tentative I have played with Tim and Dave several times in the past when I came down to play, and they are ideal players for a "piano-less" group. We will be playing a mix of my originals and standards. If it goes like I expect, we will be playing very loosely, having a great time! If you are in Houston and can make it by, that would be great! Please say hello if you do.

  20. I have an embarassingly small selection of recordings with Enrico Rava (as leader or otherwise). What are some of his better recordings. I have his ECM in quartet with Roswell Rudd, and his Italian Ballads CD. Aside from that, I may have him on a Carla Bley big band release. (or is that a Charlie Haden cd?). I need to go dig them out to make certain. Thanks in advance. I love everything I have heard of him.
  21. I talked to Roswell for the first time in almost a year and a half today. He and I have developed a long distance friendship starting when I did a paper on his career back in '92. (based on a series of phone conversations). At that time his career was pretty much in a major slump. Yet he was nonethelesss very warm and open, and not to mention incredibly encouraging and fatherly in his insights and advice regarding my own music and life. This guy is a sweetheart, and I really hope to be able to actually be in the same room with him someday soon. Of course, since '92, his career has really taken off again. Talking him today, he shared insight into what has been happening over the past year. This led me to do some googling this evening. Among the many things I stumbled across was this interview. Great reading, especially if you dig Roswell! http://lists.jazzweek.com/pipermail/jazzpr...ber/022131.html
  22. Nickname is now Mr Gravelly. When I called the wife from Baylor's trauma ward (where they later gave me morphine. ) and told her I'd be unable to pick her up at the airport later that evening as planned, her reply was "Great, now how are we going to pay for that??" Such a softy my wife is.
  23. Last week I was enjoying a pleasant drive out in the country east of town. I was on a nice two lane FM road when I entered that last turn a bit too fast. Oh, I was on my motorcycle. I had just shifted up and was in no position to pull off the turn. I ended up hitting a patch of gravel at around 50 mph. and down the bike went. Ouch. Fortunately I'm relatively okay. But I had to be transported via an EMS truck to trauma care because my blood pressure was way low (68 over something or the other). I ended up getting to go home, but I suffered a busted bone in my right hand, second degree road burns on my left arm, a nice strawberry on my chin and less severe abrasions on my right arm. Despite the immobilized thumb, I was able to do a couple of gigs on saturday. I had to pay for the drugs somehow) If I weren't a trombonist I'd be out of work for awhile. (okay, no joks about work and trombone players) The bike (a beautiful 1978 Honda CB750) made it through with minimal damage.
